Nokia Siemens Networks to expand O2’s delivery of high quality mobile services
Telefónica O2 has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to extend its mobile networks in Brno and Prague in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The deal will enable O2 to ensure enhanced capacity and high quality for advanced wireless services, including mobile broadband and data services with industry-leading speed and reliability.

Under a three-year contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will be the sole supplier of the 2G and optionally 3G networks covering Slovakia and 2G and 3G in the Czech Republic’s two major cities, Prague and Brno, allowing O2 to offer end users a new mobile broadband experience with fast data sharing and true multimedia services.

The solution from Nokia Siemens Networks is based on the market-leading Flexi Base station, which not only introduces a very flexible and modular concept to mobile access, but also allows significant savings in terms of required space and power consumption. At the same time, the Flexi implementation opens the way for a smooth migration to Long Term Evolution, or LTE, the next generation of mobile networks, as the base station is LTE-compatible.

Pwn2Own 2009

TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) team is pleased to announce that we will once again be sponsoring this year’s Pwn2Own contest for the 3rd year running. The contest will be held during the CanSecWest Security Conference March 16-20th in Vancouver, BC.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Pwn2Own contest, check out the rules and results from last year.

This year’s contest will target two sets of technologies: web browsers and mobile devices. As usual, the ZDI will purchase all winning vulnerabilities that are submitted against these targets, hand them over to the affected vendors, and coordinate public disclosure.

Rules
The browser targets will be IE8, Firefox, and Chrome installed on a Sony Vaio running Windows 7 as well as Safari and Firefox installed on a Macbook running Mac OS X. All browsers will be fully patched and in their default configuration as of the first day of the contest. The mobile device targets will include fully patched BlackBerry, Android, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile phones in their default configurations. A full list of available interfaces will be made available on the CanSecWest website under the Pwn2Own rules.

To participate in the contest, you can choose either or both technologies and must generally prove successful code execution. A contestant may only win one prize per flaw (e.g. if he is able to pwn a browser and a mobile device using the same flaw, he has to choose one to go after). Winning entries against the browsers include exploits which require no user interaction outside of a single click on a malicious link. Winning scenarios against the mobile devices include attacks that can be exploited via email, SMS text, website browsing and other general actions a normal user would take while using the device. Physical access will not be granted to the mobile devices, and proving successful exploitation of one of the mobile devices will be verified by our team of hardware hacker judges on the ground at the event.

Prizes
The Zero Day Initiative will put up $5000 per browser bug, and $10,000 per mobile bug. The first person to crack any of the mobile devices will also get to keep that device along with a one year phone contract. The first person to crack any of the browsers will get to keep the laptop it was running on. All winners will be asked to sign and agree to the general ZDI Non Disclosure Agreement, and the bugs will be turned over directly to the affected vendors.

If more than 5 people win prizes, we will offer additional “Bonus” prizes of an extra $5,000 that will be awarded this year for Most Interesting Browser flaw, Most Interesting Mobile Device Flaw, and Best in Show.

As with the last two years, we will be posting updates and the final results from the contest on our blog. Check back soon!

Nokia deal to boost Qualcomm in mobile handset baseband chips, says iSuppli

Due to its recent agreement with Nokia, Qualcomm is likely to solidify its lead in the global market for mobile-handset baseband semiconductors, according to iSuppli.

Qualcomm in the fourth quarter accounted for 40.6% of worldwide revenues from shipments of mobile handset baseband semiconductors, up from 36.3% in the third quarter. Qualcomm expanded its lead over the number-two supplier, Texas Instruments (TI), to 20.9 percentage points, up from 14.1 points in the third quarter.

Nokia and Qualcomm this month announced they will collaborate on the development of advanced UMTS mobile devices, initially for the North American market. For this effort, the companies will utilize Qualcomm's 3G mobile station modem (MSM) MSM7 series and MSM8 series chipsets that provide processing and mobile broadband capabilities.

"Until now, Nokia and Qualcomm have had frosty relations as they battled over IP rights and royalty payments related to 3G technology," said Francis Sideco, senior analyst of wireless communications for iSuppli. "Furthermore, Nokia has used custom 3G silicon from ASIC powerhouses, STMicroelectronics and TI. However, with 3G technology maturing, there is less differentiation to be had from custom ASIC solutions, making Qualcomm's standard silicon more attractive as it allows Nokia to focus on enhancing handset designs and service offerings to improve the consumer experience. This can only be considered a positive development for Qualcomm's position in mobile handset baseband semiconductors and another challenge to overcome for its competitors."

Nokia now can adopt a complete Qualcomm solution for its 3G phones, including the modem, baseband and RF segments, simplifying the design of such products, Sideco added. Furthermore, it will allow Nokia to concentrate more on consumer-oriented innovations like the user interface, services, applications and the industrial form factor.

Furthermore, by adopting Qualcomm's standard silicon, Nokia will be freed up to focus on design and IP related to ASICs compatible with next-generation 4G standards.

Supplier diversification

With the Qualcomm announcement this month, Nokia has taken another step in its effort to diversify its supply base. From once mainly using TI baseband silicon, Nokia over the years has added new suppliers, most notably STMicroelectronics, which recently formed a joint-venture with Ericsson dubbed ST-Ericsson. Nokia's increased business helped STMicroelectronics to increase its share of global broadband semiconductor revenues to 13.3% in 2008, up from 7% in 2007.

The company also has made increasing use of Broadcom silicon.

"Whether Qualcomm enjoys a major market share bump like STMicroelectronics due to this Nokia deal remains to be seen, but the company is likely to realize gains from finally being able to partner with the world's largest mobile handset brand," Sideco said.

Alcatel-Lucent to bridge Taiwan CPE makers into WiMAX network in Cambodia

Alcatel-Lucent will enlist WiMAX CPE products as well as netbooks and EDGE/WiMAX dual-mode handsets made by Taiwan makers into the supply chain of the planned WiMAX network which it will install for Cambodian telecom operator Chuan Wei, according to sources at Alcatel-Lucent Taiwan.

Alcatel-Lucent's current WiMAX CPE partners in Taiwan, including Zyxel Communications, Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB), and Quanta Microsystems, will be included in the supply chain, the sources indicated.

In addition, WiMAX-enabled netbooks designed and developed by VIA Technologies and its production partners as well as netbooks and EDGE/WiMAX dual-mode handsets from Elitegroup Computer System (ECS) will be also enlisted, the sources noted.

WiMAX CPE products from Zyxel, AWB and Quanta Microsystems have already secured the SIACS (seal of interoperability acceptance for commercial services) certification from Alcatel-Lucent, with three additional Taiwan companies expected to receive the certification by the end of March this year, said the sources.

HTC invests additional US$8 million in Shanghai plant

High Tech Computer (HTC) will commit an additional investment of US$8 million into its subsidiary in Shanghai, China for equipment installation, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE). Previous investments in the plant totaled US$48 million, HTC noted.

Global Mobile hedging its bets; to pick WiMAX equipment supplier with LTE expertise

Taiwan WiMAX licensee Global Mobile is likely to select Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) or Huawei Technologies as the equipment supplier for its WiMAX network by the end of February, according to company sources.

The main reason Global Mobile is choosing to go with one of the two is that both are engaging in the development of 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology, in addition to WiMAX, according to sources at Taiwan telecom service providers.

Selecting an equipment supplier that is able to offer network systems and products compatible both WiMAX and LTE standards would allow Global Mobile to easily migrate from one system to the other if there is a large shift in 4G technology or market demand, said sources at the company.

Although both WiMAX and LTE standards are evolved from OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) technology, development and standards setting for LTE still lags 3-5 years behind that of WiMAX, noted market sources.

Even so, development of LTE has been gaining momentum recently, and most major telecom equipment suppliers now regard LTE-enabled equipment and products is an indispensable part of their product mix, contended the sources.

Nokia seeks Taiwan partners for netbook production

Nokia is currently in talks with Taiwan notebook makers and EMS companies for cooperation on its plans to possibly enter the netbook market, according to sources at Taiwan notebook makers. The sources have pinpointed Compal Electronics and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) as the top-two potential partners.

Contrary to Nokia's strategy of outsourcing mostly OEM orders for its handset business, the company is considering a joint design manufacture (JDM) strategy for its netbook products, the sources noted.

Nokia currently has not yet decided whether to adopt Intel's Atom and Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform for its netbook, but since both Compal and Foxconn are capable of manufacturing netbooks based on either platform, the choice of platform should not influence the company's choice of partner.

Compal and Foxconn both declined to comment.
