Today is Nokia's contribution in what is now the Symbian Foundation disproportionately large, even if other help.
- There are a number of assets in UIQ, for example, so I think there were some good things in the interface that was developed. The calendar was such a force.

But now beginning to be too late, for, rather than wait for UIQ going forward, and soon "says Lee Williams to the corresponding function simply created in the Symbian Foundation.

The Symbian Foundation are manufacturers Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, as well as operators, chip manufacturers and others. The code is open source and for this project would help Nokia with Symbian and S60, Japanese Fujitsu would contribute MOAP (S) and Sony Ericsson UIQ.

J.D. Power and Associates Reports: Apple Ranks Highest Among Smartphone Consumers, While LG Ranks Highest Among Traditional Mobile Phone Consumers

As Customer Satisfaction with Feature-Rich Smartphones Increases, Satisfaction with Traditional Mobile Phones Remains Steady

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., -- Apple ranks highest in customer satisfaction with smartphone manufacturers, while LG ranks highest among traditional mobile phone users, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Wireless Consumer Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study(SM)-Volume 1 and the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Wireless Traditional Mobile Phone Satisfaction Study(SM)-Volume 1 released today.

The studies measure customer satisfaction with traditional wireless handsets and smartphones across several key factors. In order of importance, key factors in examining traditional wireless handsets are operation (30%); physical design (30%); features (20%); and battery function (20%). Among residential smartphone owners, key factors are ease of operation (30%); operating system (22%); features (21%); physical design (18%); and battery function (9%).

Apple ranks highest among smartphone manufacturers with a score of 791 on a 1,000-point scale, performing particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. LG (772) and Samsung (759) follow Apple in the rankings.

Among traditional handsets, LG ranks highest in overall wireless customer satisfaction with a score of 733, performing well across all factors. Sony Ericsson follows with 712.

Wireless Consumer Smartphone Customer Satisfaction

Among smartphone users, overall satisfaction has increased considerably, compared with the U.S. Wireless Mobile Phone Evaluation Study--Volume 2, released in November 2008. Smartphone users report sending and receiving an average of 17 e-mails per day on their phone, and 82 percent of smartphone owners report regularly using their phone's personal information management (PIM) capabilities--such as address books and to-do lists--to stay better organized.

"As consumers continuously upgrade to mobile phones that allow a full mobile-Web experience, advanced multimedia programs and 3G data downloads, overall handset satisfaction should continue to rise, as these devices tend to make our lives more convenient and prove entertaining," said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates. "It is crucial, however, that manufacturers ensure these features are intuitive and that wireless carriers educate customers to maximize their wireless experience. While manufacturers continue to develop advanced features, they must also continue to provide a high-quality calling experience for their users."

Wireless Traditional Mobile Phone Satisfaction

Overall satisfaction among traditional mobile phone owners has remained stable since November 2008, despite heightened awareness among traditional mobile phone owners of advanced features available on smartphones. On average, traditional handset owners pay $28 less per month for their wireless service, compared with smartphone owners. Traditional wireless users also pay $111 less when they initially purchase their mobile phone, compared with smartphone owners.

"Many owners of traditional handsets do not believe that the service cost associated with owning a smartphone is justified, as they indicate they would not take full advantage of the advanced features," said Parsons. "Given the current economic climate, consumers are very aware of the extra cost associated with owning a smartphone that they may not use for more than basic calling and texting."

The study also finds several key wireless handset usage patterns:

More than 40 percent of smartphone users report entirely replacing landline calling with mobile phone calling, while only 28 percent of traditional handset owners have done the same.
One-third of traditional mobile phone owners indicate they would like to have some type of GPS software or capability on their next phone.
Forty-two percent of traditional mobile phones owners received their phone for free after rebates and discounts, compared with just 32 percent in the 2008 Volume 2 study.

The 2009 Wireless Consumer Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study--Volume 1 and the 2009 Wireless Traditional Mobile Phone Evaluation Study--Volume 1 are based on experiences reported by 15,270 traditional mobile phone and 2,648 smartphone users who have owned their current mobile phone for less than two years. The studies were fielded between July and December 2008. An Early Peek Under The Palm Pre's Hood

Preliminary analysis by iSuppli suggests Palm will spend about $138 to build the new smartphone, almost half what it's expected to charge Sprint

To say Palm has a lot riding on the Pre smartphone is an understatement. Amid stiff competition from Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM), Palm's very survival may hinge on the success of the device, expected to reach Sprint Nextel (S) store shelves no later than June 30.

And while it's hard to predict demand for the Pre, preliminary analysis suggests Palm (PALM) will make a healthy profit from the units it does sell. Judging from a preliminary estimate by market researcher iSuppli, the Pre will cost about $138 to build. That would amount to 46% of the $300 iSuppli expects Palm to charge Sprint for the device; Sprint is likely to sell the handset for $200, after a $100 subsidy, iSuppli speculates. Palm declined to comment on iSuppli's analysis.

Announced to great fanfare amid a lot of buzz at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January, the Pre represents Palm's bid to reclaim relevance in smartphones, a category it once defined. After a successful run with the Treo family of handsets that began after it acquired Handspring in 2003, Palm has been left behind by more advanced products, including Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices.

an i-like, multitouch-enabled display
Researchers at iSuppli typically conduct teardown analyses of popular consumer electronic devices to estimate their costs and identify key suppliers. This analysis is an estimate, however, because there is not yet a product to tear down. So far, iSuppli has been able to identify two suppliers, says iSuppli analyst Tina Teng. Chipmaker Texas Instruments (TXN) is supplying Palm with an $11 applications chip from the so-called OMAP family of chips aimed at handsets, and wireless-chip maker Qualcomm (QCOM) is the most likely supplier of a set of wireless chips that will let the Pre run on Sprint's wireless voice and data network. Other suppliers are not definitively known.

One component that will likely attract a great deal of attention is the Pre's display. The handset sports a multitouch-enabled display, similar in some respects to that of Apple's iPhone and iPod touch. The screen and components related to it will be the primary cost-driver inside the Pre, amounting to $39.51, or almost one-quarter of its overall components cost, Teng estimates. "Having seen the demonstrations and its features at the Consumer Electronics Show and elsewhere, we made some assumptions about what it will cost," Teng says. "The materials used on Palm's display may differ from those used on Apple's display. We also think how it works will be different at the software level."

Yet the similarities to Apple's screen caught the eye of Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who fired a warning shot across Palm's bow during a Jan. 21 conference call by saying that Apple, which has several patents on multi-touch technology, stands "ready to suit up against anyone," it believes violate its patents.

The statement raised eyebrows, especially given that Palm Chairman Jon Rubinstein is a former Apple executive. At the time, Palm noted that it holds several "fundamental patents" on mobile technology, having built handheld devices since 1997, when it introduced the original PalmPilot. The company added that it could easily defend itself against a possible Apple lawsuit.

the bill? 56% of estimated revenue
Other Pre costs include memory. Teng believes the phone will have at least eight gigabytes of flash memory, adding $15.96 to the materials cost. Wireless components from Qualcomm will add another $15.41. A 3-megapixel camera, possibly supplied by Aptina, a unit of chipmaker Micron Technology (MU), is expected to cost $12.39.

The costs of the display, applications chip, wireless components, memory chips, and the camera come to more than $94, or about 68% of Teng's component cost estimate.

Teng has also estimated some non-hardware-related costs that Palm might incur. Licensing software and royalties on patents probably amount to $22.61, Teng estimates. She declined to name potential recipients of patent royalties or payments for software, but likely candidates might be companies that have provided applications to be preinstalled on the device.

Add that to the estimated cost of hardware and components and you get a projected cost of $170, or about 56% of the $300 price at which Palm is expected to sell the device to Sprint.

Now, Palm just needs to get the handset to market. This week, Sprint ran full-page ads in several newspapers showing the Pre. Meanwhile an enthusiast Web site, everythingpre.com, reported a rumor saying that the first shipment of the device left Hong Kong on Apr. 28 aboard a UPS (UPS) plane to Louisville. There is also speculation Palm may seek to try to steal the thunder of rival Apple by releasing the Pre before the next iteration of the iPhone is announced. Apple has said it will release version 3.0 of its iPhone software by the end of June and is expected to unveil a new iPhone around the same time.

In China, Knockoff Cellphones Are a Hit

SHENZHEN, China — The phone’s sleek lines and touch-screen keyboard are unmistakably familiar. So is the logo on the back. But a sales clerk at a sprawling electronic goods market in this Chinese coastal city admits what is clear upon closer inspection: this is not the Apple iPhone; this is the Hi-Phone.

“But it’s just as good,” the clerk says.

Nearby, dozens of other vendors are selling counterfeit Nokia, Motorola and Samsung phones — as well as cheap look-alikes that make no bones about being knockoffs.

“Five years ago, there were no counterfeit phones,” says Xiong Ting, a sales manager at Triquint Semiconductor, a maker of mobile phone parts, while visiting Shenzhen. “You needed a design house. You needed software guys. You needed hardware design. But now, a company with five guys can do it. Within 100 miles of here, you can find all your suppliers.”

Technological advances have allowed hundreds of small Chinese companies, some with as few as 10 employees, to churn out what are known here as shanzhai, or black market, cellphones, often for as little as $20 apiece.

And just as Chinese companies are trying to move up the value chain of manufacturing, from producing toys and garments to making computers and electric cars, so too are counterfeiters. After years of making fake luxury bags and cheap DVDs, they are capturing market share from the world’s biggest mobile phone makers.

Although shanzhai phones have only been around a few years, they already account for more than 20 percent of sales in China, which is the world’s biggest mobile phone market, according to the research firm Gartner.

They are also being illegally exported to Russia, India, the Middle East, Europe, even the United States. “The shanzhai phone market is expanding crazily,” says Wang Jiping, a senior analyst at IDC, which tracks technology trends. “They copy Apple, Nokia, whatever they like, and they respond to the market swiftly.”

Alarmed by the rapid growth of counterfeits and no-name knockoffs, global brands are pressing the Chinese government to crack down on their proliferation, and are warning consumers about potential health hazards, like cheap batteries that can explode.

Nokia, the world’s biggest cellphone maker, says it is working with Beijing to fight counterfeiting. Motorola says much the same. Apple Inc. declined to comment.

Even Chinese mobile phone producers are losing market share to underground companies, which have a built-in cost advantage because they evade taxes, regulatory fees and safety checks.

“We’re being severely hurt by shanzhai phones,” says Chen Zhao, a sales director at Konka, a Chinese cellphone maker. “Legal cellphone makers should pay 17 percent of their revenue as value-added tax, but shanzhai makers, of course, won’t pay it.”

So far, however, China has done little to stop the proliferation of fake mobile phones, which are even advertised on late-night television infomercials with pitches like “one-fifth the price, but the same function and look,” or patriotic appeals like “Buy shanzhai to show your love of our country.”

Last month, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology did warn consumers about the hazards of shanzhai phones, saying “their radiation usually exceeds the limit.” China’s consumer protection agency says faulty mobile phones were the No. 1 consumer complaint last year.

A few weeks ago, a 45-year-old man in south China was severely burned after his cellphone exploded in his shirt pocket, according to state-run news media.

But that hasn’t seemed to affect sales of black market phones, which typically sell at retail for $100 to $150. In the spirit of what is called “shanzhai” — which suggests rebels or bandits and which applies to counterfeit products of all kinds — many consumers are willing to take a risk on a cheap item that looks stylish.

“I saw iPhone pictures on the Web; it’s so cool. But it costs over $500 — too expensive,” says Yang Guibin, 30, an office worker from Chongqing. “So I decided to buy a shanzhai iPhone. I bought it in a digital market here; it looked exactly like the iPhone.”

Some experts say they believe the shanzhai phenomena is about being creative, Chinese style.

“Chinese grass-roots companies are actually very innovative,” says Yu Zhou, a professor at Vassar College. “It’s not so much technology as how they form supply chains and how rapidly they react to new trends.”

While the phones may look like famous brands, companies actually add special features like bigger screens, dual-mode SIM cards (which allow two phone numbers) and even a telescopic lens attachment for the phone’s camera.

Since it is the SIM card that makes a phone run in China, as in most places other than the United States, all you have to do is insert a valid SIM card into a shanzhai phone and it works.

All this innovation comes from an industry that only took off in 2005, after Mediatek, a semiconductor design company from Taiwan, helped significantly reduce the cost and complexity of producing a mobile phone.

Using what experts call a turnkey solution, Mediatek developed a circuit board that could inexpensively integrate the functions of multiple chips, offering start-ups a platform to produce a low-cost mobile phone.

The industry got another boost in 2007, when regulators said companies no longer needed a license to manufacture a cellphone.

That set off a scramble by entrepreneurs in this electronics manufacturing center. Counterfeiting and off-brand knockoffs flourished. Tiny companies would buy a Mediatek chip loaded with software, source other components and ask a factory to assemble them.

Marketing strategies were simple: steal. Designs and brand names were copied identically or simply mimicked. (Sumsung for Samsung or Nckia for Nokia.)

Tapping into the supply chains of big brands is easy, producers say. “It’s really common for factories to do a night shift for other companies,” says Zhang Haizhen, who recently ran a shanzhai company here. “No one will refuse an order if it is over 5,000 mobile phones.”

The people who make fake iPhones admit it’s a shady business.

“We are a kind of illegal producer,” says Zhang Feiyang, whose company, Yuanyang, makes an iPhone clone. “In Shenzhen there are many small mills, hidden. Basically, we can make any type of cellphone.”

The competition is already forcing global brands to lower prices, analysts say. And new Chinese brands are emerging, like Meizu, a would-be Apple that has opened stylish stores here.

“Our phone is even better than the iPhone,” says Liu Zeyu, a Meizu salesman in Shenzhen. “Our goal is to create a phone that makes Chinese proud.”

Struggling Motorola reportedly a contender to make Microsoft's challenger to iPhone

Motorola reports first-quarter earnings results this morning amid signs that it might weather the economic downturn with spending cuts and a possible deal to make a new Microsoft touchscreen cell phone, according to analysts and forecasters.

The Microsoft "Pink," the reported code name for Microsoft's planned multimedia cell phone aimed at challenging the popular Apple iPhone, could be manufactured by Samsung, HTC or even Motorola, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Motley Fool money advice column.

Verizon is reported to be the phone carrier that Microsoft is courting as its "Pink" partner, and Verizon already sells Windows Mobile smart phones from Motorola, Samsung and HTC, according to the Motley Fool report.

A separate report by analyst Mark McKechnie of Broadpoint AmTech consultancy predicts Motorola's handset sales will remain weak in the quarter, but he foresees a turnaround once Motorola starts producing Android-based smart phones as soon as the fall.

Meanwhile, a Cook County judge has asked Motorola and its former chief financial officer Paul Liska to try to resolve their ongoing battle over alleged evidence destruction.

Motorola alleges that Liska erased evidence from a workplace laptop, while Liska charges that Motorola is waging a smear campaign against him.

AT&T's IPhone Dependence Could Be A Concern

NEW YORK - AT&T Inc.'s (T) Mobility unit might as well be called the "iPhone carrier."

That, essentially, is what it's become as nearly three-quarters of AT&T's new wireless contract customers last quarter were iPhone users - an extremely large amount of influence that one product has over AT&T. Being so closely tied to the iPhone carries risk should the phone lose its chic status or competitors catch up with similar bells and whistles.

In addition, the dependence illustrates how badly the telco needs to maintain its exclusivity agreement with Apple Inc. (AAPL), which expires next year. While it's unlikely to change near term, negotiations could get interesting when the iPhone steps up to fourth-generation wireless technology.

"AT&T needs to have a second leg," said Roger Entner, who runs the communications practice for Nielsen Co. "Right now, that one leg is very strong."

Typically, 40% of iPhone purchases come from new AT&T customers, the telecom giant has said. In the first quarter, AT&T switched on 1.6 million new iPhones, suggesting that 640,000 subscribers, or 73% of the company's 875,000 new post- paid customers, were iPhone buyers.

Apple reports its earnings later Wednesday. Shannon Cross of Cross Research says the number of iPhone activations by AT&T suggests 4.1 million iPhones were sold worldwide.

AT&T recently rose 4% to $26.28, while Apple rose 1.5% to $123.61.

Deal A Virtual Lock

The results could weigh into the negotiations between Apple and AT&T, which are reportedly working on extending their exclusivity agreement.

AT&T declined to comment on the discussions. An Apple spokesman wasn't immediately available.

The deal has been a boon to AT&T. While the carrier has to pay a hefty upfront payment to cover subsidies on the iPhone, it also attracts higher-tier customers willing to pay more each month. In the most recent quarter, AT&T's margins for its wireless business rose as it worked through the higher number of initial subsidy payments to Apple. It also resulted in higher customer loyalty and lower turnover.

"We're thrilled to have their product as part of our lineup," AT&T Chief Financial Officer Rick Lindner told analysts during a conference call on Wednesday.

It's unclear, however, who has the best bargaining position in the companies' ongoing negotiations. While AT&T clearly needs Apple, Apple has few other partners it can defect to.

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) Chief Executive Ivan Seidenberg said in a recent interview that he doesn't believe Apple would ever make an iPhone that is compatible with its current generation network. An iPhone 4G on Verizon's wireless network is possible, but isn't likely until at least 2011.

The only other option for Apple, T-Mobile USA, is too small and lacks a fast- enough network to handle the data-intensive smartphone.

Regardless of any posturing, the two are likely stuck together for the next few years.

Too Much iPhone?

Longer term, there is a risk associated with being tied too closely to one product. While Apple's iPhone has been a juggernaut for the past two years, its run could end with the entry of other flashy devices.

"Eventually, the competition is going to catch up," Entner said.

High-profile products such as the Palm Inc.'s (PALM) Pre and a range of devices from HTC Corp. (2498.TW) and Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM) have garnered their share of hype.

Analysts did express some concern.

"Over time, it seems like it would be in their best interest to diversify," said William Powers, an analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co.

AT&T, however, dismisses the notion that it relies solely on the iPhone.

"The iPhone is important, but we have a great lineup of other devices," said AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel, pointing to the Blackberry Bold and Nokia Corp. ( NOK)'s E71x as other high-profile smartphones.

Todd Rosenbluth, an equity analyst at Standard & Poor's, noted that while the iPhone has been successful, AT&T isn't wholly dependent on its success like Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) is with the Pre.

Ultimately, it's not a major concern if AT&T maintains its exclusive arrangement.

"It's an issue for 2011," he said. "We still got some time."

The Hertz Corporation and AT&T Ink Three-Year Wireless Contract to Support Connect by Hertz Car Sharing Services

Your future rental car could be a smart car, thanks to Hertz. Hertz has signed a three-year agreement with AT&T* to provide a suite of communication services that allow Hertz representatives to wirelessly enable, monitor and manage Connect by Hertz vehicles remotely.

By utilizing the AT&T wireless network, Connect by Hertz offers a state of the art in-car communication capability for enhanced customer services. Car sharing services, like Connect by Hertz, provide an alternative to car ownership – allowing users to experience the benefits of owning a car, such as anytime access, without the hassles of fixed costs or repairs.

Connect by Hertz members are able to wirelessly stay in contact with Connect by Hertz throughout their rental experience. Additionally, Hertz can remotely communicate with the vehicle – enabling representatives to unlock, engage and locate vehicles, track drive time information and receive car return confirmation. By year-end, Hertz plans to have 1500 Connect by Hertz vehicles equipped with AT&T wireless service.

“Meeting our customers’ needs and providing car sharing products were key drivers behind developing a wireless solution for Connect by Hertz,” said Joseph Eckroth, senior vice president and chief information officer, The Hertz Corporation. “We decided to work with AT&T because we needed a reliable wireless provider whose network could go where our customers are going.”

Connect by Hertz, which launched in December 2008, offers consumers a convenient and socially conscious alternative that transfers the fixed costs of car ownership to per-trip costs. The program provides members with anytime access to vehicles in Hertz’s fleet and includes insurance, fuel, roadside assistance, maintenance and cleaning.

The solution being provided for Connect by Hertz combines the capabilities and scope of AT&T’s wireless and global IP networks – enabling customers like Hertz to leverage the benefits of one end-to-end solution and one point of contact. Additionally, these networks will enable new applications that converge voice, data and video for AT&T business customers.

The new agreement continues a long-standing relationship between Hertz and AT&T. From the time a customer makes a car rental reservation through returning the vehicle, AT&T’s voice and data networking services facilitate Hertz’s ability to provide the best possible customer experience.

Hertz’s airport and local car rental counters and major corporate sites are connected nationwide through the AT&T Virtual Private Network (VPN) service. AT&T wirelessly enabled devices are used to log in vehicles and print receipts on rent/return lots. AT&T Managed Internet Service supports the Hertz Web site where customers can make reservations online and Hertz call centers use AT&T toll-free services so that customers can make reservations via phone or get roadside assistance during their rental process.
