Verizon Wireless Opens for Business Today in Central Virginia as Alltel Integration Is Completed

Customers in Selected Virginia Markets to Benefit from Enhanced Network Coverage and Broadband Data Speeds, Access to First Touch Screen BlackBerry(R) Storm(TM) and Other Cool Devices.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., -- On Saturday, May 30, for the first time ever, local former Alltel customers will have access to the nation's largest, most reliable wireless network as Verizon Wireless opens for business in Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Madison Heights, Martinsville and South Boston, Virginia. In January, Verizon Wireless completed its purchase of Alltel and has spent the last four months integrating networks, preparing to convert billing systems, upgrading high-speed wireless broadband service, and re-merchandising stores. Former Alltel customers in markets to be retained by Verizon Wireless in Central Virginia now have access to Verizon Wireless' leading lineup of devices and data services, such as V CAST Music and Video, MiFi and VZ Navigator, and can visit Verizon Wireless stores across the country for sales and service. Customers can also participate in Verizon Wireless' Friends & Family(R), which allows unlimited calling to up to 10 phone numbers, including out-of-network calls and landlines.

The former Alltel locations in Central Virginia which have been converted to Verizon Wireless Communications stores are located at:

•874 Rio East Court, Charlottesville (434-973-8531)
•100 River Bend Drive, Charlottesville (434-293-3216)
•3919 Wards Road, Lynchburg (434-237-1729)
•21039 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg (434-832-0378)
•308 Amelon Square Center, Madison Heights (434-929-1248)
•294 W. Commonwealth Blvd., Martinsville (276-666-0818)
•4120 Halifax Rd., South Boston (434-575-5250)

The new Verizon Wireless stores are open from 10 am to 9 pm Monday - Saturday and from 10 am to 7 pm on Sunday.

Customers will be able to purchase wireless devices available exclusively through Verizon Wireless like the BlackBerry Storm, the world's first touch-screen BlackBerry, which features a music player, 3.2 megapixel camera, camcorder and HTML Internet web browser; the LG Voyager and V(R) 2; the Samsung Alias(TM) II; the G'zOne Boulder, a ruggedized phone built to military specifications as well as global devices for use in more than 200 countries.

Both former Alltel and existing Verizon Wireless customers in these areas will also now benefit from network enhancements resulting from the integration of the two companies' networks, including increased coverage in a number of areas of the Commonwealth. Wireless data speeds have been increased in Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Martinsville, as more than 100 former Alltel cell sites have been upgraded to EVDO Rev A technology, which means customers with wireless broadband-capable devices can now have access to faster Web surfing, and email access. The company's Mobile Broadband service provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps. That translates to downloading a 1 Megabyte e-mail attachment - the equivalent of a small PowerPoint(R) presentation or a large PDF file - in about eight seconds and sending the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds.

Real-Life Can You Hear Me Now?(R) Team Tests Local Network

Continued network enhancements are planned in the months ahead. To help define areas for coverage and capacity improvements, Verizon Wireless has a real-life test woman driving the local roads in one of the company's specially equipped performance monitoring vehicles. Each vehicle is loaded with computers that measure voice call quality and data connection speeds of Verizon Wireless and other wireless carriers.*

"We're thrilled to be open for business, and welcome the approximately 500,000 former Alltel customers in Central Virginia to the Verizon Wireless family," said Mike Maiorana, president of Verizon Wireless in Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland. "We're looking forward to serving these customers, and adding many new customers, as we plan to earn their business every day. I am proud of the team we have in place to serve customers in our stores, on the phone, and online, and welcome everyone to check out our remodeled stores and our best-in-class product lineup."

HopeLine(R) Phone Recycling Program Benefits Domestic Violence Victims

All Existing Verizon Wireless stores participate in the company's national HopeLine program, which collects no-longer-used wireless phones (all models, from all wireless carriers) and accessories to be refurbished, recycled and/or sold. Proceeds benefit victims of domestic violence through grants and the donation of wireless phones and service. Since HopeLine's recycling program was launched nationwide in 2001, Verizon Wireless has awarded more than $6.3 million in cash grants to domestic violence agencies and organizations and distributed more than 76,000 phones with more than 228 million minutes of free wireless service to be used by victims of domestic violence.

Nokia to ramp up touch-screen phones in India

Nokia plans to significantly ramp up its portfolio of touch-screen phones in India. The world’s largest cellphone maker intends to roll out at least 4-to-5 new touchscreen phones in the mid-to-high end segment in 2009. Nokia feels touch phones will also be key to drive revenue out of its services venture in India and thereby plans to launch touch-based applications.

The company’s forthcoming touch devices will be positioned in the enterprise, music and multimedia segment. While Nokia will primarily use the Symbian smartphone operating system S60 for its touch phones, it will launch few devices on the S40 platform as well. It is also evaluating possibilities to launch touch phones at the sub-Rs 10K price point in India.

Talking to ET, Nokia India director (marketing) Vineet Taneja said Nokia wants to cash in on the popularity of touch phones in India. Incidentally, the average selling price of touch phones are much more than the industry-average.

"Studies have indicated that touch phones will account for nearly 40% of the Indian market by 2012. This represents a huge opportunity and we too will evolve our portfolio accordingly. We were waiting for the touch technology to mature before going full steam. Now is the right moment," he said.

DLNA Surpasses 5,000 DLNA Certified(R) Devices Worldwide

Milestone Furthers Commitment to Enabling Consumers to Enjoy, Manage and Share Photos, Video and Music, Regardless of Device Manufacturer.

BEAVERTON, Ore., -- With more than 5000 DLNA Certified(R) devices worldwide, consumers now have a greater variety of options for storing and sharing their digital media. By selecting these DLNA Certified(R) devices, which represent the best products from the world's leading device manufacturers, consumers are able to connect their home network products together. In addition, the DLNA Certified products purchased today are designed to work with those purchased tomorrow.

"The number of DLNA Certified devices has grown along with consumer demand. We've certified more than 2,000 products within the last six months," said Scott Smyers, chairman of the DLNA board of directors and senior vice president of Sony Electronics Inc. "DLNA is committed to redefining the consumer home media experience, making storing and sharing digital media easier than ever. With over 5,000 certified products, consumers can purchase with the confidence that their money will be spent on devices that work together now and in the future."

Today's home networks can be complex and confusing for consumers. With so many devices available, and no way to know for sure if they will work together, many consumers are left with products that do not communicate or provide a way to easily move digital media from room to room. In a recent DLNA commissioned study conducted by an independent market research firm, more than 75 percent of respondents claimed they would like to share, store and access their music and photos on any device within the home. However, many consumers currently have no way to do this as their music and photos are stored on devices that cannot easily connect to each other.

Consumers buying products bearing the "DLNA Certified" logo can be sure they are purchasing solutions that work together and can be networked, regardless of the manufacturer. DLNA Certified products adhere to DLNA Interoperability Guidelines and have met stringent interoperability tests. These products cover a wide variety of device categories including personal computers, mobile devices, televisions, digital cameras, and printers.

About DLNA

Members of Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) share a vision of an interoperable network of personal computers (PC), consumer electronics (CE), mobile devices and service providers in and beyond the home, enabling a seamless environment for sharing and growing new digital media and content services. Founded in 2003, the group established and maintains a platform of interoperability based on open and established industry standards that, when used by manufacturers will support the sharing of media through wired or wireless networks. More than 200 multi-industry companies from around the world have joined DLNA, committing the time and resources necessary to achieve their vision. DLNA's 2009 Promoter Members include: Access, Awox, Broadcom, Cisco, Comcast, Ericsson, HP, Huawei, Intel, JVC Kenwood Holdings, LG, Macrovision, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, NXP, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and Toshiba. Searchme App Now Available at Newly Launched Nokia Ovi Store

Searchme's visual search engine integrated into Nokia's media distribution network.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., -- Searchme, Inc. (www.searchme.com) announced that the Searchme Nokia app is available at Nokia's Ovi Store. Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, launched its Ovi Store on Tuesday. The Ovi Store is a 'smart store' that changes the way Nokia's customers can discover and consume content on their mobile phones making the experience more relevant.

Instead of a list of blue links, Searchme delivers images of web pages, videos, music and products on the search result page making it easy to find and consume information on a cell phone. Searchme offers significantly improved performance for searching on a phone because it runs as a native Symbian application rather than in a slow-rendering web browser. Unlike other search applications, Searchme supports a full touch screen interface on mobile devices including the Nokia 5800 and N97 phones.

"Searchme is thrilled to be able to leverage the power of Nokia's global scale in devices through participation in its Ovi Store, making Searchme available to over 165 million handset owners," said Randy Adams, Searchme Founder and CEO. New Aino and Yari entertainment phones introduce Sony Ericsson's Java Platform 8.5 (JP-8.5)

Sony Ericsson announced two new entertainment phones on May 28, 2009 – Aino focuses on sound & vision and Yari is the first phone outside the Japanese market to have gesture gaming.

Aino and Yari are Java™ Platform 8 (JP-8) phones, making it 30 phone series that support MSA, and introduce the new JP-8.5 sub-category with extended functionality of the Java Platform. Both phones support the Sony Ericsson Project Capuchin API, so now 12 phone series have this bridging technology.

Below is an overview of each phone and a summary of the extended platform functionality delivered by JP-8.5, including Sony Ericsson APIs made publicly available for the first time and new liberalized permission settings.

Aino: sound and vision
Aino is a HSDPA, slider-format phone combining the best of two worlds with a keypad and a intuitive touch UI in media mode. Aino includes Sony Ericsson's MediaGo™ application which transfers, plays and organizes music, photos and videos in most file formats, and Remote Play for PLAYSTATION®3 allowing you to control your PLAYSTATION 3 and access its media contents from your mobile phone.

Yari will be available during Q4 2009. More information and specifications here>>

Sony Ericsson's Java Platform strategy
Sony Ericsson uses a platform approach to Java ME platform implementation allowing developers to focus on a platform rather than on a variety of phone product names. As a platform supports many phones, you can deploy one build across several phones saving time and effort.

The platforms are implemented through an evolutionary approach to ensure forwards compatibility between platform versions.

Java Platform 8.5 (JP-8.5) – new sub-category with extended functionality
All JP-8 phones are based on MIDP 2.1 and have the same core JSR set based on the Java umbrella standard Mobile Services Architecture (MSA) JSR 248. The addition of the new Aino and Yari means that MSA full set can now be found in 30 Sony Ericsson phone series.

Sony Ericsson's Project Capuchin API is supported by all JP-8.4 phones and onwards. Aino and Yari take the number of phones with Project Capuchin to 12. Download Project Capuchin Docs & Tools>>

The new Aino and Yari are JP-8.5 phones which are differentiated from previous JP-8 sub-categories with extended functionality of the Java Platform.

Here is an overview of these extensions:

Nokia IAP Info API
Publicly available in JP-8.5, the Nokia IAP Info API allows Java applications to access fundamental Internet Access points and Destination Network related information.
Sony Ericsson Network bearer API (IAP Info extensions)
This native Sony Ericsson API is first made public on JP-8.5 and is an extension of the Nokia IAP Info API. The "IAP Info API" (com.nokia.mid.iapinfo) provides a convenient interface for Java applications to query and use the network settings of the mobile phone. However, IAP Info is limited to the static configuration of the phone, and in many situations this is not enough. In some applications, it is desirable to subscribe to network configuration updates, such as when a new bearer becomes available. This is the purpose of Sony Ericsson's IAP Info extensions defined in the Network bearer API.
Liberalized Permission Settings
The permission settings have been updated to the more user-friendly configuration put forward in the JSR 248 (MSA) specifications. This allows Java applications in the "Untrusted" domain to ask a lot less permission questions, and applications signed in "Trusted 3rd Party" could actually get rid of all questions if the user selects that when the questions appear the first time.
Additional Content Handlers (JSR 211)
The following content handlers are available on JP-8.5 - camera application (picture or video clip retrieval), phonebook launcher, positioning LMX, send via Bluetooth™, VideoDJ and SIM application toolkit.
Sensor API (JSR 256) extensions
The extensions available on JP-8.5 phones include the sensors for camera motion, camera shake detection and step counter.
Java Bindings for OpenGL® ES API (JSR 239), 1.1 Extension Pack support
Sony Ericsson JP-8 phones fully support OpenGL and EGL version 1.0. JP-8.5 sees the addition of the OpenGL ES 1.1 Extension Pack.
More information about JP-8.5 extended functionality is presented in the updated Java ME CLDC MIDP 2 Developers' Guidelines – download here>>

Use phone's system properties to query Java Platform version
The major platforms revisions are incremented with minor revisions that can include additional functionality and improvements whilst ensuring backwards compatibility within the same Sony Ericsson Java Platform.

You can query the Sony Ericsson Java Platform on the phone with the "com.sonyericsson.java.platform" system property

System.getProperty("com.sonyericsson.java.platform");

Palm Pre Syncs with Apple iTunes

As early testers of the Palm Pre smartphone may have discovered, the Pre mobile device reportedly syncs seamlessly with Apple's iTunes software. As the legality of this is debated, some say with or without iTunes the Pre presents no danger to the iPhone.

The MP3 player on the much-anticipated Palm Pre will seamlessly sync with Apple's iTunes software, save for copyright-protected files, Palm confirmed on May 28.

The Palm Pre, scheduled to debut on June 6, holds the hopes of the struggling Palm, which has been working to position the Pre as the first serious competitor to the Apple iPhone.

Palm confirmed that its upcoming Pre WebOS will include an application, called Palm Media Sync, which will synchronize with iTunes and allow users to transfer DRM-free music, photos and video onto the Palm Pre. Connecting a USB cable from a PC or Mac to the Pre and then selecting "media sync" on the device will launch iTunes on the desktop, from which the user can select files to transfer.

"We designed Palm Media Sync to be an easy and elegant way for you to take the content you own and put it on Pre," Jon Rubinstein, executive chairman of Palm, said in a statement published on the official Palm investor relations Website.

A USB connection between a Pre and a computer will also allow the mobile device to function as a hard drive: Users will be able to drag-and-drop content from the desktop onto the Pre, and vice versa. The Pre will import photos onto the desktop that were originally taken using the smartphone's camera.

Whether or not Apple believes it has anything to fear from the Pre—which features a multitouch interface, like the iPhone, as well as a slide-out QWERTY keyboard—the maker of iTunes is not likely to appreciate a possible competitor offering a taste of its own bread and butter, legal issues aside.

"I think Apple will fight it, if there's a legal means of fighting it," Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, told eWEEK. "Plus, Apple routinely upgrades iTunes all the time—if you use iTunes you're constantly being asked if you want to upgrade. Apple can do anything it wants [to stop the Pre from being compatible]."

Much has been made of the fact that designers of the Palm Pre are former Apple employees. Given this, Gottheil said, "I assume that, one, they knew exactly how Apple iTunes identifies the iPod it's connected to and, two, that they expected Apple to protest [them sharing that with the Pre]."

Part of the reason for the creation of iTunes was that in order for Apple to get the permission of music publishers to sell songs on its site, it had to figure out a way to prevent the songs from being endlessly copied. "Apple doesn't want to let competitors leverage its investment in iTunes software and the online iTunes store," explained Gottheil.

Regardless, Gottheil said, he believes the Pre poses no "terrible danger" to Apple.

"There's an entire ecology that Apple has used to gain an enormous lead in the market. The Pre will have to come up with a number of applications [to make its brand distinct]," Gottheil said. "There's a chicken/egg thing going on here. ... It's a tall hill to climb, and just being a little bit better, presuming the Pre is, is not going to be enough to get people to choose something without the wide support system the iPhone has."

The Fortune blog further reported that when asked about the Pre during a January earnings call, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook "said Apple would use whatever weapons it has at its disposal to fight companies that rip off its intellectual property."

ATandT Eyes Sale of Palm Pre in Future

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson says his company, which is the exclusive carrier for Apple's iPhone, would like to sell Palm's high-profile Pre phone one day.

CARLSBAD, California - AT&T Inc's Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said on Wednesday that the No. 2 U.S. mobile service would be keen to sell Palm Inc's high-profile Pre phone at some point in the future.

Pre -- due to go on sale on June 6 exclusively at AT&T's smaller rival Sprint Nextel -- is seen as Palm's best hope to win back market share lost to rivals such as Apple Inc's iPhone.

AT&T is the exclusive US provider for the iPhone. In response to a question about the Pre at the All Things Digital conference near San Diego, Stephenson said Sprint currently has the exclusive rights for Pre but added that he would like to sell the Pre one day.

"Would I like to see that on our network some day? Of course I would," said Stephenson. "We obviously talk to all the handset manufacturers. We want a broad selection of devices in the lineup. That's important. Devices right now are what's driving the customer adoption as much as anything."

Verizon to Sell Palm Pre, New BlackBerry Phones

Verizon will offer Pre in the next six months or so, according to CEO Lowell McAdam. It will also offer a new version of RIM's BlackBerry Storm and the new BlackBerry Tour.

NEW YORK - Palm Inc's iPhone competitor Pre got an unexpected boost on Thursday as No. 1 U.S. mobile service Verizon Wireless said Pre would be part of its upcoming device line-up, sending Palm shares up 8.8 percent.

Palm is depending heavily on Pre to revamp its own business and regain market share from rivals such as Apple Inc. Pre is also seen as key to helping stem customer losses at Verizon's smaller rival Sprint Nextel Corp, which is launching the Pre exclusively on June 6.

Verizon, the No. 1 U.S. mobile service, will offer Pre in the next six months or so, company Chief Executive Lowell McAdam said during a conference webcast.

Verizon Wireless said its phone line-up would also include a new version of the touchscreen controlled BlackBerry Storm from Research In Motion Ltd and a new BlackBerry called Tour. Also slated are devices from Motorola Inc and phones based on Android, the Google Inc mobile system.

"Over the next six months or so you will see devices like Palm Pre and a second generation Storm," on the Verizon Wireless network, McAdam said. "You can expect to see us launch a steady stream of new devices from multiple vendors."

Some analysts had worried that Palm was limiting Pre's success by forging an exclusive agreement with Sprint, which lasts at least until year end, as first reported by Reuters in February and confirmed by Sprint on Thursday.

As a result, UBS analyst Maynard Um said Verizon's Pre news was encouraging for Palm investors. But the analyst predicted increasing competition in the advanced phone market, saying that Motorola "could be the wildcard in the smartphone race" as it has the potential to be most aggressive on price.

"However, visibility in an increasingly competitive market is still limited," the analyst said in a research note.

Um also said he expects other new Palm phones based on the same operating system as Pre. For example Randall Stephenson, the chief Executive for AT&T Inc, the No. 2 U.S. mobile service, had said during a conference on Wednesday that his company would also like to sell Pre but he did not give a timeframe. AT&T uses a different network technology to Sprint.

The comments come ahead of Sprint's long-awaited Saturday, June 6, launch of Pre and the expected announcement of a new iPhone from Apple in the week after that.

Top executives from both Palm and Sprint have said they expect Pre shortages around the launch because of strong demand.

McAdam's announcement was also a boost for Motorola Inc, which has been steadily losing market share and is pinning its hopes on the launch of a new line-up of advanced phones based on Android later this year.

AT&T is the exclusive U.S. provider for iPhone and derives much of its customer growth from the wildly popular and much imitated touchscreen device.

Verizon's McAdam said that multiple device launches for the rest of this year would ensure his company is not be dependent on any one phone for keeping customers and winning new ones.

Verizon Wireless is already the exclusive U.S. carrier for the first BlackBerry Storm launched by Research In Motion late last year. While reviews of the first Storm were mixed, Verizon had said January 28 that it had sold 1 million phones since the device's November 21 launch.

McAdam said Verizon Wireless said Tour would be a new upscale BlackBerry, that that company expects to sell along with Storm in the next six months or so.

RIM had said earlier this month that it was planning a new edition of Storm to help it push into the consumer market but it had not announced a timeframe.

Verizon rose 32 cents to close at $29.27 and Sprint was up 7 cents at $5.14, both on the New York Stock Exchange. On Nasdaq, Palm rose 93 cents to $11.46 and RIM's U.S. shares were up $3.01, or 3.9 percent, at $80.30.

Yahoo! Enables Marketers to Deliver Smarter Ads on the Web and on Mobile Phones

Leading Ad Technology Providers + Yahoo!'s Reach and Targeting = Greater ROI.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Yahoo! announced two display advertising solutions for marketers as part of a new partner program designed to significantly improve campaign performance by marrying Yahoo!'s massive reach and targeting capabilities with leading third-party advertising technologies. By bringing together Yahoo!'s knowledge and understanding of its audience with third-party Smart Ad technologies from Teracent and Tumri, Yahoo! believes it's offering an open and unmatched solution for reaching consumers with customized messages.

Yahoo!'s new Smart Ads program will help marketers to develop Smart Ad campaigns quickly and execute them at scale across personal computers and mobile phones in North America. Yahoo! will consider expanding the program to international markets in the future.

Smart Ad campaigns use ad-optimization technology to create a near-limitless variety of creative executions through a combination of offers, colors, images and messaging in real time. These combinations can be finely tuned to match customized messages with users, helping marketers to find the right ad for the right set of users and the right time. Testing of this initiative has already helped advertisers significantly improve campaign performance based on a variety of metrics, including click performance, conversion and overall return on investment.

For example, Yahoo! and Tumri worked with Hewlett-Packard to create a Smart Ad campaign that generated more than 20,000 unique creative experiences, reaching more than 140 million US users. This campaign documented a return on ad spend that was more than 20 times higher than their traditional display campaigns. HP has developed separate Smart Ad campaigns with Yahoo! and Teracent, also producing higher results than traditional campaigns.

"The ability to run a display advertising campaign that can match the ROI of my search marketing spend is a potentially game-changing proposition," said Catherine Paschkewitz, director of demand generation, HP Direct. "The Smart Ad solution has enabled us to increase our ROI by reaching the right set of users with the right message."

Smart Ads Start with Insights
Because Smart Ad campaigns are most effective when developed with rich consumer insights, Yahoo! can deliver effective campaigns that move consumers from awareness to action. Nearly 150 million people spent more than 43 billion total minutes on Yahoo! sites last month1, providing unmatched opportunities for Yahoo! to work with marketers to develop effective and customized Smart Ad campaigns.

"Other publishers will offer so-called smart ad campaigns, but if it's not running on the Yahoo! Network, it's not as smart as it could be," said David Zinman, vice-president and general manager, display advertising at Yahoo!. "We're giving marketers the opportunity to reach consumers with customized ads on the PC and mobile Internet, and given the high performance of these campaigns in initial testing, it's as if we've put performance marketing on steroids."

Mobile Smart Ads
Yahoo! will also soon offer Smart Ads technology to mobile advertisers through its partnership with Teracent. As with the PC offering, advertisers will be able to customize creative to individual users in real time. Smart Ads on mobile phones will be especially valuable to marketers, offering additional factors such as location, time of day, and even specialty attributes like local weather, to tailor messages to users on the go. Yahoo! will offer mobile Smart Ad technology at scale for marketers.

The new program will also allow Yahoo! to expand its current Smart Ad offering to advertisers across all categories. Yahoo plans to continue adding new Smart Ad program partners that will be certified by Yahoo! over time.

Verizon Wireless’ Integration Of Alltel Operations Continues On Track In Brooklyn, Ohio

Customers Benefiting from Merger.

BROOKLYN, OH — Verizon Wireless, the wireless company with the highest customer loyalty, announced that its integration of Alltel’s billing system and retail operations is progressing as planned and that Alltel customers, who have already begun benefiting from changes implemented since the January merger, will soon see additional results of the integration.

“Our goal is to offer all Verizon Wireless customers the best possible customer experience on the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless network,” said Roger Tang, president – Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia region, Verizon Wireless. “That means transitioning Alltel customers to Verizon Wireless handsets and pricing plans as soon as they are eligible to upgrade their handsets – so they can enjoy the benefits of our 3G broadband wireless network, advanced device portfolio and industry-leading data services.”

Alltel customers can keep their existing service plans and their phones even after the integration is complete. In fact, Alltel customers are already experiencing some of the benefits of joining with Verizon Wireless. For example, since the merger was announced in mid-January, Alltel customers have been added to the Verizon Wireless Mobile to Mobile Calling family and may now call any of the company’s more than 80 million customers without using their plan minutes.

Beginning in early June, the Alltel-branded store at 4830 Ridge Road in Brooklyn will begin featuring Verizon Wireless merchandising and handsets. With this change, eligible area customers who want to transition to Verizon Wireless now will be able to activate new handsets and pricing plans at this store. Other Alltel customers who do not wish to transition at this time to Verizon Wireless will continue to receive sales and service support on their existing accounts. Additionally, Verizon Wireless customers can now be served at this new location.

“This dual point-of-sale operation gives Verizon Wireless additional stores in the Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia region,” Tang said, “and will help us ease the transition of existing Alltel customers to Verizon Wireless ahead of our brand and billing conversion.”

As announced in January, the company is continuing to use the Alltel brand until it completes the branding and billing system integration. This work is well under way and is projected to be completed in the fourth quarter.

In the meantime, Alltel customers who have questions about how the merger may affect them, can visit www.alltel.com to find answers to many questions including the most frequently asked, some of which are also listed below:

Will Alltel customers’ wireless devices still work once the company is fully integrated with Verizon Wireless? Most Alltel customers’ wireless devices will work on the Verizon Wireless network after conversion.

Based on our wireless device testing, fewer than 1 percent of Alltel customers may need to replace their wireless devices for use on the Verizon Wireless network after the conversion. These are older devices that do not contain the chipset required to receive over-the-air software changes to enable them to work on the Verizon Wireless network. Also, customers who want to sign up for a Verizon Wireless price plan, take advantage of Verizon Wireless data services (such as VZ Navigator(SM), V CAST and others), or those who choose to migrate early to Verizon Wireless, will need to purchase a Verizon Wireless device.

If an Alltel customer’s current device cannot receive over-the-air software changes, does the customer have to pay for a new device? If a device cannot receive over-the air software (More) changes to enable it to work on the Verizon Wireless network after conversion, the phone will be replaced with a like device at no cost to the customer, or the customer will receive a credit toward the purchase of a higher-priced device.

Once the companies are fully integrated, can an Alltel customer continue to benefit from Alltel’s My Circle? My Circle will continue to be available to Alltel customers while they are on Alltel price plans.

Also, if an Alltel customer changes to a Verizon Wireless device and a qualifying price plan, he/she can benefit from the company’s Friends & Family® feature at no additional cost. The customer can choose up to five or 10 Friends & Family numbers (including friends on other networks, office numbers or home numbers) and enjoy unlimited calling with them—anywhere within Verizon Wireless’ Nationwide Coverage Area.

Do Alltel customers in contract who choose to port their numbers to Verizon Wireless before the integration have to pay an early termination fee (ETF)? Eligible Alltel customers within four months of their contract end dates will not have to pay an ETF.
