Being flash isn’t always the answer

GLOBAL - There are some problems that can’t be fixed through the usual route and need to be resolved a different way. Capturing good images in low light has always been a challenge for mobile devices, for a variety of reasons, and one which the newly launched N86 8MP was tasked with tackling head on. The team responsible for conceiving the N86 is lead by Damian Dinning, who has a long history in photography (his first job was in a camera shop, before working for a variety of global camera brands). Damian had an ambition about 20 years ago where photography would become part of everyone’s daily lives, be accessible and easily usable and form part of our daily communication. Since joining Nokia he’s been heavily involved in the Imaging Business Unit, and is now responsible for developing a raft of Nseries devices (he was also involved in the N82). Fitting then, that one of the guys responsible for us being able to take better images with our mobile devices is also the guy who coincidentally, even by his own admission, had that vision all those years ago.

Capturing images in low light is something the N86 8MP does with some skill (check out our direct comparison between N86 8MP and N82). The imaging setup in the N86 sports two fundamental improvements over other devices. The first is the size of the aperture, which is much larger than normal and also variable, changing size depending on the amount of light available. Photographers will know that the bigger the aperture, the more light is allowed into the sensor and so the easier it is to capture low light images. Equally, variable aperture size means the camera is just as effective when light is in abundance.

The second key difference lies in the sensor. Much more sensitive than any previous sensors in mobile devices it is capable of handling more detailed, and defined, image capture. Again, this is a huge benefit in low light where flash-assisted images can suffer with an increase in noise (those speckles you see in some images shot indoors).

Ultimately, what the team ended up creating was a device that in many low light situations doesn’t require a flash (though the sensor and aperture both work well with the fully optimised LED unit on the N86).

The obvious question to ask, particularly when comparing the N86 with the N82 is why it doesn’t have a Xenon flash. Despite the fact it doesn’t really need one in most situations, the team tried hard to get one in but found the added bulk would have a significant impact on the whole look and feel of the device. Like other Nseries devices, design plays a key part in the N86 and much focus (sorry, couldn’t help myself) was put on ensuring the device looks as good as it performs.

By tackling low light head on, the N86 manages to create crisp, noise-free images, even when the environment would normally ensure the opposite would happen. Of course the camera’s imaging prowess also benefits from improved algorithms and better shutter speed control. It also sports a smart technology which runs in the background, helping to eliminate blurry images. Automatic Motion Blur Reduction (AMBR) monitors pixel movement, frame by frame, and makes allowances for when either the camera or the subject moves. Simply by spotting if all the pixels in the frame move simultaneously, the sensor instantly suspects camera shake and makes the appropriate corrections. If smaller groups of moving pixels are detected then the camera assumes the subject is moving and once again makes the appropriate corrections. Smart stuff indeed, and no, I don’t know how it works either.

With the number of people using camera phones increasing all the time, and users of low end compact cameras migrating to their mobile device for imaging, it’s looking like the camera phone is really starting to come of age. Charlie here on Conversations is a huge fan of the N86 (he’s just upgraded from the N82) and it’s not surprising to see why. In time, like many others, I’m sure this technology will filter down to other devices. For now though it remains the privilege of N86 8MP owners. Lucky them.

New China Unicom iPhone model, sans Wi-Fi, given approval

Reports of regulatory approval of a new model of the iPhone in China seem to confirm that Apple's hardware will appear on the China Unicom network, and also suggest that a new model was created for the country of over 1 billion.

The new iPhone is reportedly a GSM/WCDMA model that operates on the 900MHz, 1700MHz and 1900MHz bands. It also includes Bluetooth, but no Wi-Fi. It was approved on May 7, according to a China's State Radio Regulatory Commission filing discovered by Engadget. The phone has been approved for use in China for the next five years.

This week, reports surfaced that suggested a deal had been reached between Apple and China Unicom, but officials close to the matter quickly intervened to say the deal was not final.

News on the phone from China, as translated by iPhoneinChina.com, suggests the new model could fall under the Unicom WCDMA standard.

China Unicom runs a GSM/UMTS 3G mobile network using the same signaling technology at AT&T in the U.S. and most other carriers worldwide. Existing iPhone models are already compatible with China Unicom's network, though WCDMA is a third-generation GSM technology.

Pictures of the new Chinese iPhone show a 16GB model that operates on the 3G spectrum. The Hong Kong model includes English text on the back, and says the model is WCDMA .

Details of the China Unicom deal leaked this week reportedly set a minimum threshold of CNY 5 billion ($731 million) in iPhone sales, guaranteeing orders of one to two million devices per year. The source said China Unicom could begin selling the iPhone as early as late September. China Unicom is also rumored to pay Apple 3,000 CNY ($439) per unit and price it below that for customers, Unicom promises to sell a minimum 1 million units per year, and the Chinese iPhone will access "Apple's China App Store."

In February, China Unicom was fingered as Apple's most likely partner by British consulting firm Ovum, followed by a leak of iPhone information inadvertently posted by China Unicom's website and an admission by the company that it was in talks with Apple in March. Earlier this month, Analyst Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros. similarly claimed that China Unicom would be the frontrunner in marketing Apple's phone in the country.

With over 135 million subscribers as of February 2009, China Unicom is 170% larger in terms of users than AT&T in the US, but it is still China's second largest mobile carrier after the state-owned giant China Mobile, which boasts 471 million subscribers, making it the world's largest carrier by number of subscribers.

The vast size of the Chinese market has kept observers intently interested in how and when Apple would officially enter the market with the iPhone. On its recent earnings call, Apple executives only said they planned to begin selling the iPhone within the next year and described the negotiations as a "priority project." That may have been cover to keep its negotiations productive as Apple pitted the Chinese carriers against each other to gain the best deal.

In addition to phone network compatibility, China Unicom may be more open to allowing Apple to run its own software store and retain control over iPhone features such as WiFi and Bluetooth. In contrast, China Mobile has expressed an unwavering demand to exclusively operate its own mobile software store, a stance also adopted by Verizon in the U.S.

LG 'Recession Strategy Working,' Says LG Electronics USA President

NEW YORK, -- LG Electronics' "strategy to overcome the global recession is working," the company's U.S. president declared today.

In his keynote address at the LG Summer Line Show in New York, Teddy Hwang, president of LG Electronics USA said strategic investments and cost efficiencies are at the heart of its successful business strategy. He pointed to LG Electronics' just-released corporate financial results, reflecting record-high sales and operating profits for the second quarter of 2009, "major accomplishments in this economic environment."

On a global basis, sales increased 12 percent to $11.2 billion, resulting in a 6.1 percent operating profit. "This is primarily due to major cost efficiencies and, to some extent, currency valuations," Hwang said.

He also highlighted second-quarter results by business unit: Home Entertainment global revenues were up 19 percent to about $3.5 billion, Mobile Communications sales increased 26 percent to about $4 billion, and in Home Appliances, despite the slow recovery of the housing market, revenues increased by nearly 10 percent to $1.8 billion. Its Air Conditioning and Business Solutions units reported operating profits with sales remaining flat to slightly down.

North America now represents approximately one-quarter of LG Electronics global revenues. "In the United States, the current climate continues to impact the industry. We've seen this in home appliances, where LG focuses on higher-end products, while some consumers are now buying cheaper models." (LG still holds the top U.S. spot in front-load laundry and a very strong position in French-door refrigerators).

In mobile phones, LG maintains the #2 market share in the U.S., led by exciting new handsets and strong support from major wireless carriers. And, in the U.S. Home Entertainment business, LG is doing better than last year, because dealers and consumers love our new products, including network plasma and LCD HDTVs and Blu-ray players." At the same time, LG continues to make major investments in marketing and R&D. LG Electronics is "building for the future by making major investments in our products and operations," Hwang said. Last year, LG invested 3.7 percent of global revenue in R&D. "And, we're making a similar investment in 2009. This is crucial to product leadership," he said. The U.S. market also just saw the launch of its "Something Better" integrated marketing campaign.

Also important is LG's investment of $100 million in Mexico. "We're consolidating LCD TV manufacturing plants in Reynosa and Mexicali into one plant in Reynosa to produce mid- to large-size and premium TVs. And we're expanding the Monterrey appliance plant, adding gas ranges to current production of electric cooking products and refrigerators. The consolidation and expansion of these plants will offer improved efficiencies and, most importantly, allow us to better serve our U.S. customers," Hwang said.

He concluded by explaining that LG continues to identify new growth opportunities in the business-to-business (B2B) sector with its Commercial Air Conditioning and Digital Signage businesses. "These B2B areas offer significant growth potential and capitalize on product and technology strengths we have in-house today."

Windows Mobile becomes Windows Phone

AT AN EVENT to show off upcoming Christmas goodies, Microsoft let slip to the INQ that Windows Mobile 6.5 is to be re-christened Windows Phone.

This, says Vole, is an effort to unboggle the minds of the consumer with all the "6.1" and "6.5" business that exists now, and which they're afraid will get even worse when Windows Mobile 7 arrives.

The name change also "reflects the upcoming desktop operating system release where people away from their PC can have the same experience everywhere," says Microsoft. Are you suitably un-boggled?

The name Windows Phone applies to Windows Mobile 6.1, 6.5 and multitouch Windows Mobile 7. At least something in the Windows universe is forwards and backwards compatible.

Features of the new platform (that is WM 6.5, aka Windows Phone) include back-up of all SMS and email content into Vole's cloud, remote disabling of the handset and inclusion of an Itunes-alike Windows Mobile software repository called Market Place.

If this sounds like a phoney story to you, it did to us as well but we have this confirmed in a video which should be around on Friday, included in a first look preview of the final version of Windows Phone.

Smartphone Growth Encouraging, Yet the Worldwide Mobile Phone Market Still Expected To Shrink in 2009, Notes IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The worldwide mobile phone market recorded another quarter of year-over-year decline in the second quarter of 2009 (2Q09). According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, handset vendors shipped a total of 269.6 million units worldwide, down 10.8% from 302.2 million units in 2Q08. The second quarter results are an improvement from the 17.2% decrease seen during 1Q09, but ongoing challenges stemming from the economic crisis remain a factor to watch.

"The challenges from the previous nine months – aggressive channel destocking, foreign exchange volatility, and uncertain demand – continued to plague the mobile phone market in the second quarter, but were not as severe as before," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. "Those vendors who were able to adjust quickly were rewarded with greater shipment volumes. Although this tested the handset vendors' abilities to hit a moving target, customers reaped the benefits of lower-costs, even on key high-end devices."

For the full year, IDC believes that the market will decline 13%, with the market outlook for 2009 remaining relatively consistent among the top vendors. The small signs of improvement were centered around consumer demand for high-end handsets and the manufacturers' ability to shift portfolio to meet these needs.

"Among the big handset vendors, Nokia, Samsung, Research In Motion, and Apple, all beat expectations for smartphones within the second quarter," said Ryan Reith, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "This demand for high-end mobile phones has created a price war among large mobile operators and handset vendors. Amidst the ongoing economic challenges in North America, the market for converged mobile devices thrived with the arrival of the Palm Pre and the iPhone 3G S towards the end of the quarter. Shipment volumes for other converged mobile device vendors also benefited from increased attention and price adjustments on the segment, pushing the market even higher. At the same time, interest in prepaid devices remained strong for budget-conscious customers. Finally, the market for mid-tier and high-end devices began to show signs of improvement with the arrival of new devices from leading vendors.
Despite the expected decrease in volume from last year in Latin America, the second quarter of 2009 was stronger than expected, showing solid sequential growth from the doldrums that were seen in 1Q09. Local currencies in the key markets of Brazil and Mexico experienced revaluation from the precipitous drops that occurred in the prior six months, helping to alleviate some of the economic pain being felt by many businesses and consumers. Interest in 3G services and offerings have been expanding in the region, helping carriers to increase, or at a minimum sustain, ARPUs that have been falling over time.
Results in Western Europe continue to reflect weaker demand from the previous year despite some improvement from the first quarter. The growth of the very low-end segment was not sufficient to reverse the decline in traditional mobile phones. However, the robust growth of converged mobile devices was a sign that the recession may have reached the bottom and some improvements can be expected for second half of the year. In CEMA, the market showed more vitality after two quarters of abrupt decline, with regional shipments approximately 15% higher than in the previous three months. With handset distribution and sale largely out of mobile operator hands, the financial crisis had squeezed inventory out of the channel as bank and trade credit dried up. The recovery of shipments in the second quarter suggests that this process has now been largely completed and that underlying demand remains robust.
High levels of private savings and aggressive national fiscal policies have helped sustain the demand for consumer products in Asia/Pacific, even as the global economy sputters along. Now, with several Asian economies showing the green shoots of recovery, mobile phone demand has also responded in a healthy fashion, with shipments for the region once again surpassing 100 million units in 2Q09.
Top Five Mobile Phone Vendors

Nokia finished 2Q09 with shipments back above the 100 million unit mark. Launches of key devices, including the E71, N97, and the 5800 converged mobile devices, mitigated further ASP decline and operational efficiency resulted in healthy gross margins overall. Nokia's shipment volumes were roughly equal to those of the next three vendors by the end of the quarter. While still substantial, this is nevertheless down from a year ago when Nokia's shipments were nearly equal to the next four vendors' combined total shipments. While CEO Kallasvuo was pleased with the overall results and the company's traditional advantages, he also highlighted Nokia's ability to shape the evolving wireless landscape, combining mobile devices and the Internet with Nokia's strong operations, ecosystems, customer relationships, and metrics to track success.

Samsung saw its shipment volumes edge back above the 50 million unit mark on the strength of its broad product portfolio and was rewarded with the highest year-over-year gain among leading vendors. Its touch-screen and messaging devices continued to find a warm reception in Europe and North America while feature-capable devices and slim form factors attracted customer attention in emerging markets. Meanwhile, operating margins returned to double digits despite higher marketing expenses. By the end of 1H09, Samsung was nearly halfway to its goal of shipping 200 million units in 2009.

LG Electronics maintained its momentum from 1Q09 to gain market share and improve profitability. Driving its success was a strong portfolio of mid-tier and newly-introduced high-end devices as well as overall operational efficiency. LG also unveiled plans to improve its converged mobile device presence, with the launch of the GM730 this summer and up to five models by the end of this calendar year. Over the next two years, LG hopes to capture 10% of the converged mobile device market.

Motorola posted another quarter of operating losses as well as the largest year-over-year decline among the leading vendors. Not to be overlooked, however, is its significant improvement in reducing those losses 50% from the previous quarter. The company also made progress filling in some of the gaps in its product portfolio with the launch of several messaging devices. These include the Clutch i465, Karma QA1 and the Rival A455. Moreover, plans to release Android-powered converged mobile devices during 2H09 appear to be on track and gained further clarity with the rollout for accelerated application development with its MOTODEV program.

Sony Ericsson's challenges in the mobile phone market continued, earning the company a fifth place finish in 2Q09 while falling further behind Motorola. Ongoing cost reductions, competitive pressures in key regions, and an aging product portfolio resulted in a gross margin of just 12%, but nonetheless an improvement from the 8% in the previous quarter. Sony Ericsson announced plans it hopes will bear fruit later this year, including the launch of its GreenHeart and Communication Entertainment product lines, as well as enhanced content, services, and applications for consumers.

Smartphone growth encouraging, yet worldwide handset market still expected to shrink in 2009, says IDC

The worldwide handset market recorded another quarter of on-year decline in the second quarter of 2009. According to IDC, handset vendors shipped a total of 269.6 million units worldwide, down 10.8% from 302.2 million units in second-quarter 2008. The second quarter results were an improvement from the 17.2% decrease seen during first-quarter 2009, but ongoing challenges stemming from the economic crisis remain a factor to watch, said IDC.

"The challenges from the previous nine months – aggressive channel destocking, foreign exchange volatility, and uncertain demand – continued to plague the handset market in the second quarter, but were not as severe as before," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's mobile devices technology and trends team. "Those vendors who were able to adjust quickly were rewarded with greater shipment volumes. Although this tested the handset vendors' abilities to hit a moving target, customers reaped the benefits of lower-costs, even on key high-end devices."

For the full year, IDC said it believes that the market will decline 13%, with the market outlook for 2009 remaining relatively consistent among the top vendors. Small signs of improvement were centered around consumer demand for high-end handsets and the manufacturers' ability to shift portfolio to meet these needs.

"Among the big handset vendors, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Research In Motion (RIM), and Apple, all beat expectations for smartphones within the second quarter," said Ryan Reith, senior research analyst with IDC's worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker. "This demand for high-end handsets has created a price war among large mobile operators and handset vendors. Apple's price cut on the iPhone 3G reflects a trend we expect to continue in the upcoming quarters, and one that will effectively maintain competitive pricing within mature markets."

HTC revenues up 10% on year in 2Q09

HTC (High Tech Computer) has reported revenues of NT$38.2 billion (US$1.16 billion) for the second quarter of 2009, in line with its mid-point guidance range of NT$37.5-38.5 billion. The figures represented an increase of 20.9% on quarter and 10% on year.

Gross profits totaled NT$12.24 billion in the second quarter, up 28.8% sequentially and 2.3% on year. Gross margin stood at 32% for the quarter, slightly higher than the guidance due to cost structure improvements, according to CFO and spokesperson Cheng Hui-ming.

HTC's handset shipments reached three million units during the April-June period, up from 2.4 million units shipped in the first quarter of 2009, and 2.8 million units a year earlier.

However, revenues are likely to decline slightly to NT$34-36 billion in the third quarter, while gross margins are likely to remain high at 32-33%, Chen said.

Acer aims to be top-five smartphone vendor: Q&A with Aymar de Lencquesaing, president of SHBG at Acer

Acer aims to ship 2-2.5 million own-brand smartphones in 2010 and the company expects its annual shipments to increase to 20 million units by 2012-2014, making the company a top-five global smartphone vendor with a 6-7% market share. Aymar de Lencquesaing, president of Acer's Smart Handheld Business Group (SHBG), recently provided insight to the company's view of the smartphone industry and Acer's strategy to succeed in the segment during an interview with Digitimes.

Q: Acer has entered into the handset business, so what is Acer's strategy as a handset vendor?

A: We aim to target all the segments in the market, otherwise we will be considered a niche player as a brand for either mass market or high-end devices. In addition, you have to build up an economic scale in production. Accordingly, we have completed a survey on 30,000 consumers and we intend to roll out various handsets to cover the needs of different segments.

Q: The smartphone segment includes traditional handset makers as well as PC vendors. How will Acer face the competition?

A: There is no market without competition. PC makers and handset vendors all have products and they are looking at the potential of mobile data devices that can target the smartphone, netbook, notebook, or other converged device segments. However, I think a vendor has to offer a complete lineup of products in order to survive in this type of market.

With handsets, Acer now can offer carriers more products to choose from. Acer has built up its success as well as its reliability based on the solid foundation it has in the notebook and netbook segments. This has provided us with an advantage when we are pushing sales of our Acer-brand handsets to carriers.

Q: Have you set a sales target for your business group?

A: The global smartphone market is growing at a rate of 15% a year. We look to ship 2-2.5 million smartphones in 2010 and expect annual shipments to reach 20 million units in 2012-2014. Some have expressed doubt over our goal, but that is what I'm pushing for.

We expect our handset sales to gain momentum later on, and we are looking to rank as a top-five branded smartphone vendors in the next 3-5 years.

Q: What are the effects of Acer's acquisition of E-Ten Information Systems? Will E-Ten and your ODM handset partners play different roles?

A: E-Ten boasts a strong R&D team and also has a good reputation, and I think the consolidation between Acer and E-Ten is complementary. E-Ten will focus on R&D and deal with small volume production, while ODM partners will handle large volume production.

Q: Being the CEO of Packard Bell previously, have you faced any adjustment in your capacity as the head of Acer's smart handheld business unit?

A: Although the technologies and clients pertaining to PC and smartphone segments are different, I believe I can still bring a useful management style to Acer because the two segments still have something in common such as dealing with carriers.

I am always positive despite having to routinely take into account market concerns that can sometimes makes me a bit paranoid. This is a dynamic market and I have to constantly watch what new products are coming out from Apple or RIM (Research in Motion). Whenever I am thinking about the goal of pushing Acer to become one of the top-five smartphone vendors, I am inclined to be more paranoid, which is healthy, because it pushes me harder to move forward.

Emerging HSPA+ networks may hamper LTE deployment, say sources

A growing number of carriers worldwide have begun to deploy HSPA+ networks that are capable of offering download speeds of up to 21-28Mbps at present and 42-84Mbps later. The developments may affect the deployment of the LTE technology which can provide a download speed of up to 100Mbps, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

A total of 11 HSPA+ networks went into commercial operations in the past six months, and nearly 30 carriers worldwide have started either testing or building HSPA+ networks, according to data compiled by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA).

iPhone Developer Steamed over App Store Ejection

The CEO of the company whose Google Voice-related application was recently yanked by Apple from the iPhone's App Store is hopping mad.

Kevin Duerr, the chief executive of Durham, N.C.-based Riverturn Inc., took Apple out to the woodshed over its refusal to explain why his VoiceCentral application was pulled from the App Store earlier this week. "I'm a self-admitted Apple 'fanboi', but this knocked me to the core," said Duerr in an interview today.

In a blog entry posted Tuesday, Duerr outlined his conversation with an Apple representative, identified only as "Richard," who had called to inform Riverturn that VoiceCentral, an application that let iPhone users log in to the Google Voice service, had been removed from the App Store.

During that conversation, Richard told Duerr that VoiceCentral was being dropped because it "duplicates features of the iPhone," but repeatedly refused to answer Duerr's questions, including what his developers could change to meet Apple's requirements.

"Can you tell me what portions of the app were duplicate features?" Duerr asked.

"I can't go into granular detail," Richard replied.

Duerr persisted. "Is there something we can change or alter in order to regain compliance and get back in the Store?" he asked.

"I can't say," responded Richard.

VoiceCentral was approved by Apple for the App Store in late April, and although it had not sold in large numbers, sales had been on an upswing in the last few weeks, Duerr said, after Google announced it was offering its own application for the BlackBerry and Android platforms.

On Thursday, Duerr was still obviously upset at the treatment Riverturn received. "My sincere belief [Tuesday] was that I got through to them, and that someone from Apple would actually talk to me about this," he said, referring to a repeated requests to Richard that he ask his manager to contact Riverturn. "But no, we haven't heard a thing from them."

Apple has a checkered history in its dealings with iPhone developers. Other applications, such as the NetShare tethering application, have been yanked with similar cryptic explanations.

Duerr said that he has received no replies to the many e-mails he has sent this week to Apple and its iPhone development team.

"I know that they're Apple, and they love their shroud of secrecy, but I don't understand it in this line of business," said Duerr. "What's the harm in telling developers why an app has been rejected or pulled from the App Store? Other than the volume of apps that are submitted, I don't see the problem with taking action. Why wouldn't you say: 'Here's why.'"

The lack of information has frustrated Duerr to the point where he's questioning whether the iPhone platform is worth supporting. "The way they handled it, how can I possibly authorize spending money on iPhone development?" he asked. "There's a new mobile marketplace opening up every week it seems."

To add insult to injury, Apple is giving refunds to VoiceCentral users who, understandably, are concerned about their purchase now that the application has been dropped from the App Store.

"Users are freaked out," said Duerr. "VoiceCentral will continue to work, we just can't provide updates or new features. But they're saying 'I don't want this thing,' and Apple gives them a refund. Now they're taking that money out of our pocket, and not just the 70% that we received [from the original purchase] but also the 30% that Apple received. That's the way Apple's agreement is written."

His objection was that the refunds were sparked, not by a flaw in the program, but by Apple's unilateral decision to yank the application. "I lived up to my end, we're still supporting users, but what they're doing, this is unbelievable," said Duerr. "We've lost the expense it took to develop the applications, we've lost the opportunity to have VoiceCentral on the App Store, and now we've lost the refund.

"And we didn't any say in the matter" Duerr complained.

Apple declined to comment on Duerr's claims.

AT&T* announced a new agreement with The University of South Carolina (USC) to provide Wi-Fi access at the University’s Columbia, S.C., campus. AT&T and the University will equip more than 160 buildings across the campus, as well as outdoor spaces, with high speed wireless broadband from AT&T Wi-Fi Services. "We have a rich history of providing the best educational tools for our students and support for our faculty and staff, so AT&T was a clear choice for us because of their experience and expertise in offering premium Wi-Fi service,” said Harris Pastides, USC President.

“We are truly excited to offer the USC campus community the opportunity to stay connected to what’s important to them, whether it’s a late night study session, an online lecture, class registration, or social networking with other students from across the globe,” said Xavier Williams, AT&T Senior Vice President for GEM Markets. “AT&T Wi-Fi provides the broadband coverage and 24/7 connectivity that college campuses require.”

From university campuses to corporate campuses, Wi-Fi is an efficient and effective way to provide broadband coverage to link sites of any size. The University’s Wi-Fi network will provide public Internet access for students, faculty, staff and guests and carry University Intranet traffic. The deal also includes transport for their broadband network.

“USC has been helping young people connect with their futures for more than 200 years,” said Pamela Lackey, President, AT&T South Carolina. “We are thrilled to have been selected to join the University in this project to open new connections across the campus and beyond.“

AT&T Wi-Fi Services will provide round-the-clock network monitoring for the University and a complete turn-key managed Wi-Fi network service, including site survey, design, installation, monitoring, repair, maintenance, and warranty of equipment. AT&T will be the University’s primary source for Wi-Fi network needs.

The agreement comes on the heels of AT&T’s second quarter results, noting that it handled nearly 15 million Wi-Fi connections on its network – a 41 percent increase over the first quarter. With approximately 25.6 million connections so far in 2009, AT&T Wi-Fi connections this year have already surpassed the 20 million connections seen in all of 2008.
