Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Froyo 2.2.1 AOSP ROM released

This is an alpha build for testing purpose
It's not ready for daily use!

Description:
Xperia X10 Froyo 2.2.1 rom is a fresh and clean build of latest AOSP, without any custom modifications. The first release (alpha build) is not fully suitable as main operating system, but still pretty ok for most of the tasks. The alpha build is compiled with engineering and debug flags, so please don't expect it to be fast or stable. It definitely will lag and crash every now and then. The main reason of releasing it is to gather as much end-user feedback as we can. Most of the issues are already addressed and being worked on (as described below), so I'm expecting BETA version to come in several days.

The BETA version will be flashable into your X10's flash memory and ready to be used as main (and only) system. For now, I feel like dual booting is the way to go (and hope you like the idea).

New features:

DUAL BOOT

Press any key during the boot process (right after "Sony Ericsson" text logo) to boot into 2.1 ROM. Otherwise it will boot into 2.2 Custom Rom.
There is a plan to prepare boot menu, this would allow us to multiboot (number of ROMs only limited by SD Card capacity)

Known problems:
- no Audio playback (voice calls work)
- no native Video playback (RockPlayer works)
- camera - not implemented yet
- random reboots (identified - WIP)
- random lags (identified - WIP)
- slight radio issue - voice calls - sometimes (1 out of 25-30 for me) both you and the other person sound like a chipmunk (identified - WIP)

Requirements:

- 1GB of free space on SD Card
- phone needs to be rooted with busybox installed

Installation:
1. Download the rom package (FreeX10_alpha-release_0.0.1.tar.bz2)
2. Unpack it to the root (main folder) of your SD Card
3. Connect your phone in USB Debugging mode
4. Open ADB shell, switch to root user (SU)
5. Issue the command:
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/install of=/data/install && chmod 777 /data/install && ./data/install
6. Reboot when installation is finished
7. Enjoy

Notes:

- the build comes pre-rooted and with busybox installed, there's no need to do it again.
- DON'T use the "factory reset" option in custom rom. It's hardcoded to wipe nand "data" partition!
- when message pops up "Force Close / Wait", select wait... it will eventually finish the task.
- this build IS very early alpha, bear in mind it will crash and lag. If you don't like it, try 2.1 AOSP build instead.
- first run may take up to 5 minutes, this is directly related to the lagging issue.
- remember you won't hear any ringtone, enabling "Vibrate:always" is good idea.
- be patient it gets much faster and less laggy over time, when everything is cached

Buzz Builds for Sony Game Phone

TOKYO—The head of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB indicated that the mobile-phone maker might be working with parent company Sony Corp. on a smartphone with a slide-out controller to play videogames.

Sony Ericsson Chief Executive Bert Nordberg said he is aware of speculation that the company is at work on a smartphone that would take advantage of Sony's experience in developing the PlayStation Portable videogame device.

"There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere," Mr. Nordberg said during an interview. "Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that's very interesting."

While many have already started to call the expected device a Sony PlayStation phone, the handset is likely to carry Sony Ericsson's Xper ia brand, another person familiar with the matter said. The handset is also likely to run on Google Inc.'s Android operating system, and the videogames might be available through an application, the person said.

Sony Ericsson, a 50-50 joint venture between Sony and L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co., has tapped the Japanese conglomerate's consumer-electronics expertise in the past, but it has steered clear of the PlayStation gaming platform, in part because of Sony's concern that it might dilute the successful PlayStation brand.

However, the popularity of simple games available on smartphones is now a serious threat to dedicated portable gaming devices such as Sony's PlayStation Portable. The current generation of smartphones with touch screens isn't "optimized for games," said Mr. Nordberg, who took over as CEO in October 2009.

Asked why Sony Ericsson hasn't already released a phone employing Sony's gaming resources, Mr. Nordberg said: "I haven't dug into that history, but the future might be brighter."

Mr. Nordberg, who said he wants to make a lot of "noise" with a new product at the Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona in February, said there is no technological difficulty in launching a gaming-oriented phone. The main challenge, he said, is that the company has to consult many lawyers to negotiate rights issues with game publishers. "I'm very glad that we work with a company like Sony, who actually knows how to do it," he added.

After several fiscal quarters of net losses, Sony Ericsson became profitable earlier this year, thanks to a restructuring and successful releases of Android-based smartphones.

Mr. Nordberg said analysts have been too focused on sales-volume declines in the July-September period. Sony Ericsson could easily increase sales volume by offering more inexpensive phones, but profitability is more important, he said. "We do no phones under €50 ($68.43), because we won't make money," he added.

Since the spring release of its first Android-based smartphone, Mr. Nordberg said, the company has built a strong position quite quickly in that segment. He said he expects Android to remain the dominant smartphone platform in Sony Ericsson's lineup for at least the next two years.

To gain an edge in an increasingly crowded market for Android-based smartphones, the company will have to diversify its lineup. "Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn't we use that?" Mr. Nordberg asked. "Gaming, including content, is a very interesting proposition."

Android to overtake iPhone sales in France next year - IDC

Android phone sales are forecast to overtake iPhone sales in France in 2011, according to IDC. Of France's projected smartphone sales of about 8 million in 2011, 29 percent are expected to be Androids and 26 percent iPhones. By 2012 the installed base of Android phones is likely to be greater than iPhones in circulation. IDC expects Android to have a 30 percent share of French smartphone sales in 2013, up from 18 percent in 2010 and 2 percent in 2009. iPhones are expected to make up 24 percent of smartphone sales in 2013 versus 29 percent in 2010. Symbian wil have a 20 percent share in 2013 versus 32 percent in 2010 and BlackBerry 13 percent versus 12 percent, respectively. The Samsung Galaxy S has been France's most popular Android phone for the last few months. Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Perron said the company was still in talks with Microsoft about using Windows Phone 7, but it prefers Android because Google's operating system allows it to introduce more product differentiation. "With Windows 7 we run the risk of standardising our smartphones. We would be obliged to compete only on design on price, which we want to avoid", he told Les Echos, adding that Sony Ericsson had no plan to launch a tablet.

First look. Sony Ericsson Anzu - X12

Mobile-review have posted a review of the Sony Ericsson Anzu XPERIA X12. Here is their final impression.

Adding to that , the much better build quality and problem free devices from HTC have already started to shift the image of the company for the better, something that cannot be said for Sony Ericsson and all the software and hardware problems in most of its current and recent product lineup .
Going against the Galaxy S is also a suicide committed by blowing yourself up with a stick of dynamite, considering that the X12 will face both Galaxy S and its successor on the market. Even now Galaxy S offers much better features coupled with a superb screen and the only drawbacks are some of its software problems, which, by the way, didn't prevent the device from being the best seller for Samsung.
Not long after the X12 hits the shelves across Europe, i9100 will see the light of day as the new flagship from Samsung and will offer all the characteristics that X12 was believed to have, but of course it doesn't. The Super AMOLED screen will be improved, the hardware will be upgraded to a mind blowing level and its multimedia features will make most current devices look outdated.
As a teaser let us all be reminded that the hardware used in Galaxy S now is capable of 1080p video playback, a capability used only in Galaxy TAB. This was not a mistake from Samsung, but rather a conscientious choice.
So what's left for Sony Ericsson and the X12? Some of the momentum created years ago in many markets still holds in some of them at least enough for the networks and local retail stores to trust Sony Ericsson and buy one of their devices. This momentum is slowing down in some markets and in others it has completely stopped. X12 will only help stopping in more of them and will leave Sony Ericsson lagging behind even more. A device that could easily have been a decent middle range solution (much like Desire Z is for HTC) is thrown into the market to be eaten at the top end and take down the company with it. Its price tag will not be justified with its features in any possible way and the software disadvantages will only disappoint the buyers of the device.

Work Ongoing on Pinch Zoom for Xperia X10

Even though the focus of this blog at this point is mostly on the Android 2.1 update of the X10 family I have something else I would like to share with you.
There has also been lots of rumors around this and I just want to clarify what we’re working on and what to expect.
(I will continue posting information on the current SW-update roll-out after this!)
As many of you know, just before the release of the Xperia X10 we saw lots of discussions around any potential support for multi touch.
Myself and Sumit were then very clear on the fact that there were no plans of having X10 supporting multi touch and said so here on this blog mainly to not have you guys hoping for things that just wasn’t planned.
Since then, because of the huge reaction to this and the real desire for multi touch expressed by you the users, there has been lots of investigations going on and I now have some good news to disclose. We aim to enable multi touch (pinch zoom) in an over-the-air update for the X10. The timing for this update is still a bit work in progress but it will for most markets be during Q1 next year.
What has happened is that some brilliant engineers actually was able to change the driver and firmware for the touch digitizer to make some multi touch gestures work. We are still working on perfecting the user experience and I will keep you updated as work progresses.
I also want to be clear on what to expect from this feature. The digitizer in the X10 is not perfect when it comes to multi touch, there will as an example be situations like when the movement of the two fingers cross each other on the X- or Y-axis that could cause strange behavior. (There has been much online debating around what is “good” and “bad” Multi Touch in competitor phones and this is following the same lines.)
Therefore we also will not enable it everywhere but the current plan is to enable it for the following use-cases:
- Pinch/Zoom in the web browser.
- Pinch/Zoom in Google Maps.
Besides that there is also support in third party applications but because of the limitations on e.g. crossing axis there might be situations where it behaves strangely while it will work just fine for most use-cases.
The support is basically for gestures like pinch/zoom so don’t expect e.g. multi touch gaming with buttons pressed simultaneously on different parts of the screen to work.
Let me know if you have specific multi touch enabled apps you want me to test!
Below is a video where I show some of the use-cases and what to expect on a prototype SW in my X10.

Ericsson - Aircel's largest 3G partner in India

Ericsson to deploy 3G network in six of Aircel's market areas or circles
Millions to be connected through mobile broadband with Aircel
Mobile broadband solution includes radio, core, transmission and related services

Aircel, India's leading mobile operator, part of Maxis Communications Berhad, Malaysia, has awarded Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) a contract to roll out a 3G/HSPA network across six out of its 13 circles or geographic market areas. These six circles currently serve more than 100 million subscribers and Ericsson will be Aircel's largest partner for 3G implementation. Aircel will offer its customers services such as video telephony, mobile broadband, mobile TV, video on demand and others including music downloads, video tones, instant messaging and online gaming.

For many people, broadband has changed from being "nice to have" to being an absolute necessity in modern-day life - for conducting business, managing a household or as a means of entertainment. Likewise, the mobile phone has become one of the main tools for nearly 5 billion people in the world to communicate. Along with mobile broadband, it enables whole new ways of keeping in touch, accessing services and working on the move.

Sandip Das, CEO of Maxis says, "Ericsson and Maxis, have a long history of infrastructure partnership starting up from 2G through to 3G and possibly future technologies, across our subsidiaries and allied companies operating in Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. We respect them and look forward to their continued support to our group's commitment to providing quality networks and advanced services to our customers".

Hans Vestberg, President & CEO, Ericsson says, "Maxis group and Aircel is a preferred partner for us. We greatly value our strategic association and the India 3G agreement further reinforces this partnership".

Gurdeep Singh, COO of Aircel says: "For many people in India connected for the first time, 3G mobile broadband will bring completely new types of services and benefits. We are confident that with this partnership, we will benefit from Ericsson's global expertise of 3G deployments, and will be able to offer our customers a world-class 3G experience.

Gowton Achaibar, head of Ericsson India, says: "We are extremely excited to partner with Aircel for the implementation of its 3G network. We foresee 3G brings economic advantages and increased social interaction in the country. With the advent of 3G, the mobile phone will not just be about convenience and satisfying a basic need for communication; it will also provide access to services such as healthcare, education and information, supporting people's livelihoods."

Under the agreement with Aircel, Ericsson will provide core, radio and transmission network equipment as well as related services such as network rollout, network technology and consulting, radio network optimization and support services. The mobile broadband network will include the latest multi-standard radio base station, RBS6000, and the MSC Server Blade Cluster, which will drastically boost the capacity of the network and evolve it into an IP network. The framework contract will be implemented from 2010 to 2012. Deliveries and deployment are underway. Aircel and Ericsson made the first successful 3G call last week in Chennai and Coimbatore.

The six Aircel circles Ericsson provides 3G technology in are: Tamil Nadu Bihar; Orissa; Jammu Kashmir; North East; and Assam.

MBNL network consolidation project completed by Ericsson

Ericsson consolidated 12,000 shared sites in MBNL's UK network
T-Mobile and Three customers now get far greater 3G coverage
New business model shows how operators can benefit

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) announces the delivery of more than 12,000 consolidated 3G sites for Mobile Broadband Network Ltd (MBNL), bringing more coverage and capacity for Three and T-Mobile UK customers. Thanks to this active network consolidation project, all 3G sites, transmitters, base station equipment and backhaul connected to the operator's core networks are now fully configured for high speed mobile broadband access.

MBNL is the network joint-venture between Three and Everything Everywhere, the company that runs Orange and T-Mobile in the UK and today's landmark follows three years of intensive effort and investment by MBNL and its partners.

Alongside the customer benefits, Three and Everything Everywhere will see significant savings and environment benefits because of network sharing. This has included the switching off of more than 5,000 sites - more than 2,000 of which have already been fully decommissioned - as part of a project recognized as the largest and most successful integration of two live networks to have occurred anywhere in the world.

Graham Payne, Managing Director, MBNL said "This was an exciting, challenging and ultimately hugely rewarding project for the team at MBNL. My thanks to all who have worked so hard to deliver this fantastic network, special thanks go to our key partners who are rightly proud of their roles in this project".

Under the five-year managed service contract announced in February 2009, Ericsson is the primary service provider for the project and was responsible for network design and deployment, building of sites, capacity management, equipment swaps and vital upgrades. Millions of man-hours were committed to improve speeds and coverage for Three and T-Mobile customers. The consolidation work started in February 2009 and was completed in October 2010. This was done while keeping the two networks running smoothly during the project, which also saw Ericsson deliver the all-important cost and efficiency savings.

Magnus Mandersson, Head of Business Unit Global Services, Ericsson, said: "This was an unparalleled and quite complex managed services and systems integration consolidation project. Its success shows the benefits to partners of network sharing and reflects a new business model that the industry can learn a great deal from. All the partners involved in this network sharing project - not least T-Mobile and Three customers - have all emerged as winners. I'm proud of our success and look forward to supporting and advising MBNL as their managed services partner."

Smartphone and applications essential to the modern mother

Applications are only for teenagers, right? Smartphones are only for techie geeks, right? Social media via mobile broadband is only for digital natives, right? Wrong, wrong and wrong again. Modern telecoms technology is helping to tumble walls that once divided generations. The connected world means having access to everything. Just ask mother-of-six Maria Bivesjö, who manages her life by mobile phone.

One of the certainties of growing up used to be that you were interested in things that your parents weren't – especially technology. One of the certainties of getting older used to be that your children were interested in technology that you didn’t really understand – or even care about.

The mobile phone, internet and mobile broadband – and all associated functionalities and applications – have created a world where parents and children use, and are proficient in, the same technology.

While Maria has always been interested in technology, it was her son's diagnosis of a chronic illness that resulted in her making the mobile phone an essential tool in her everyday life. Quite simply, she needed to be instantly reachable.

But Stockholm-based Maria soon realized that she could use the device for much more and literally manage her life via the mobile phone. As a busy mother, full-time school teacher and boxing enthusiast, that’s a lot of management. This approach soon evolved into trying new functionalities and applications.

"With six children living at home, my days are disrupted," she says. "I want to be efficient all the time. Thanks to my mobile phone, I can keep track of everything from parents' meetings to where the children are.

"Many think that the information flow causes greater stress, but for me it's the opposite. I’m calmer in the knowledge that I have a tool to help me. But I use my smartphone at least as much for the entertainment value; I play games, test fun mobile apps, and log in to sites like Facebook and Spotify."

Maria is hungry for more apps, as long as they are affordable.

"I'd like to see an application for booking and ordering services, such as a library app that could tell you when the book you are looking for becomes available; or a drugstore app that allows you to order medicine and collect it at the store or distribution point.

"I like finding my way through the app jungle, but I’d never buy one for more than SEK 35 (about USD 5). I want them to be cheap because then you can afford to test them and discard them."

Stories like Maria's show why applications are important to Ericsson. Embracing the connected world is central to Ericsson's prediction of an all-communicating world of more than 50 billion connected devices by 2020. Almost everyone and everything can potentially be connected, whether it is machine-to-machine (M2M), person-to-machine or person-to-person.

Applications are now a crucial element in the traditional telecoms industry. Ericsson's applications store, eStore, was launched in late 2009. It is an open platform, with programs for all operating systems, allowing all operators to create their own apps stores.

Aside from being an applications store, eStore is also a community for developers.

With Maria Bivesjö providing living proof of the power of the mobile phone and mobile applications to directly change lives and cross the generation gap, it seems like an all-communicating world with more than 50 billion connected devices will become a reality.

Managed services in 29 countries for TeliaSonera International Carrier

The three-year extension contract covers 29 countries and adds field maintenance in Russia
Agreement enables operator to focus on business and customers
New deal continues seven-year partnership in Managed Services

TeliaSonera International Carrier has renewed and expanded its multicountry Managed Services contract with Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), building on a deal signed in 2003 and expanded in 2005. Ericsson will now perform field operation services for the operator's voice and data networks, built on multivendor equipment. Among the larger countries covered are Austria, France, Germany, the UK and the US; the expanded deal also involves taking over field maintenance in Russia.

Operators, carriers, service and content providers, and corporations around the world use TeliaSonera International Carrier's 27,000 miles of fiber. As well as the voice network, Ericsson will be responsible for field operation services in 29 countries covering TeliaSonera International Carrier's IP, transmission, media, and dense wavelength division multiplexing technology (DWDM) network. DWDM is an optical technology used to increase bandwidth over existing fiber optic networks.

Robert Puskaric, head of Region Northern Europe and Central Asia, says: "This is a milestone for Ericsson as we will be managing field maintenance for one operator in 29 countries. The contract demonstrates Ericsson's leadership in managed services and how we continue to meet operators' specific needs."

Ericsson will begin managing TeliaSonera International Carrier's services in 28 countries on December 1, 2010, and in Russia on February 1, 2011. The markets covered are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the UK, Ukraine, and the USA.

China Unicom and Ericsson in managed services contract

Ericsson wins managed services contract with China Unicom, serving five major cities of China's eastern Anhui province
Ericsson takes full responsibility for base station sites, fixed network and transmission in a three-year integrated field maintenance agreement
Allows China Unicom to cut its costs and provide improved services for its subscribers

The longstanding partnership between China Unicom and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) passed a landmark as Anhui Unicom - a provincial company of China Unicom - signed a three-year integrated field maintenance agreement with Ericsson, making Ericsson its largest managed services partner in Anhui Province. Ericsson will take care of the maintenance work for base station sites, as well as fixed network and transmission.

This is the largest managed services contract between the two to date. By outsourcing field maintenance, more time is freed up for the operator to focus on its existing and potential customers.

Li Chao, General Manager of Anhui Unicom, says: "Anhui Unicom and Ericsson have been strategic partners for many years and we have a very high opinion of Ericsson's expertise in all aspects. We believe that Ericsson will extend its successful managed services business model and world-leading capabilities to Anhui and help us improve our network efficiency, lower operational cost, and fulfil our commitment to the consumers."

Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson China & North East Asia, says: "China represents the largest telecom and internet market in the world with some 800 million mobile subscribers and 420 million internet users. It also has the largest telecom infrastructure, with more than 320,000 3G base stations. We hope that by becoming Anhui Unicom's largest managed services supplier we will set a benchmark for field maintenance services throughout China Unicom."

Anhui is the eighth most populated province in China and has a mobile penetration of around 50 percent. The field maintenance agreement between Ericsson and Anhui Unicom covers five major cities of China's eastern Anhui province including Wuhu, Xuancheng, Bengbu, Chuzhou, and the province capital city Hefei.

In the past, Ericsson has been one of the major suppliers to Anhui Unicom and its largest GSM supplier. Ericsson has also long-term cooperation with the customer in professional services, including network rollout, network performance improvement, learning services and spare-part management.

Next stop for 4G/LTE - Denmark

Danes will soon enjoy data access with unmatched speeds and all types of latency-sensitive and bandwidth-demanding services over the mobile network
Denmark's incumbent operator TDC signs commercial 4G/LTE contract with Ericsson including the complete Evolved Packet Core and the LTE radio solution
The full-scope contract is the first 4G/LTE deal including managed services

Denmark's leading operator TDC is about to upgrade to 4G and has chosen Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to supply and manage the nationwide network. The contract builds on the existing strategic partnership between the two. Under the deal, Ericsson will roll out a complete 4G/LTE solution - including radio access and core network equipment - as well as managed services. This is Ericsson's first full-scope managed service contract for an LTE/Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network. Danish people will benefit from enhanced experiences when accessing data-rich services with unmatched speeds. Latency and bandwidth will be greatly improved with the new LTE network.

Jess Ibsen, CTO of TDC says: "Providing an amazing experience for our subscribers is our highest priority. Therefore, it's vital that our transition to the new LTE technology is as smooth and fast as possible. Choosing Ericsson is a continuation and expansion of TDC's strategic cooperation with Ericsson. With that, TDC is still committed to deliver quality experiences for all users in TDC's mobile network. We're sure that it will be a seamless transition and that Ericsson will provide the best LTE experience for our customers."

"It's a historic day for us - not only for our business in Denmark but also from an international perspective because TDC is an important customer for Ericsson," says Lars Tofft, Head of Ericsson Denmark and Norway. "By extending our strategic partnership with TDC we have received the chance to prove our leading technology and managed services capabilities to support the successful launch and operation of their new LTE network."

The contract includes radio access network with RBS 6000 series, a complete Evolved Packet Core solution as well as the full scope of managed services. The roll out of the network starts immediately.

To date, Ericsson has signed commercial LTE contracts with seven major global operators. There are two live commercial LTE networks (TeliaSonera in Sweden and Norway, and MetroPCS in the US) in the world and Ericsson is the main supplier for both networks.

Ericsson has been driving open standards and has had the highest impact on the released LTE specifications. Ericsson expects to hold 25 percent of all essential patents for LTE, making it the largest patent holder in the industry.

Because the LTE network is tailor-made for handling data transfer, it also embraces new types of services. Connected cameras, music players, cars and even electricity networks will be part of everyday life in the near future. Ericsson envisions a world of more than 50 billion connections, including people, places and devices, by 2020.

Netia has sights set on Polish households

Netia, Poland's second-largest fixed network operator, recently extended its managed-services contract with Ericsson by three years. By putting its network operation in reliable hands, the operator can focus on its major asset: private households.

Poland is now fully mobile. The penetration rate of mobile services is as high as 120 percent, because people are signing up for multiple subscriptions. But rather than competing for new mobile subscribers, Netia has chosen a different path. It is going after fixed broadband household consumers, a market that for many years was monopolized.

Miroslaw Godlewski, CEO of Netia, says: "We have been very active in the development of this newly-available market and the result is that there has been a fast increase of broadband services in our country. The speeds are rising and prices for broadband access are also dropping quickly – which makes it more affordable, so more people are signing up for services."

The operator recently joined the trend of bundling services. Instead of just selling broadband as before, Netia is now packaging its services with unlimited calls subscriptions and other fixed voice packages. Some companies have already started upselling the third service, TV, though not always IPTV, and bundling with other technologies, such as satellite. Netia is getting ready to bundle three services and offering it to more and more users.

Netia has been the biggest beneficiary of the deregulation of the market. In the past three years, it has taken a 30 percent market share of net additions and has been the fastest growing company in terms of providing broadband services to new users. This also means that Netia has been growing revenue – which is not very common among telecom companies.

So what type of support does Netia need from Ericsson?

Godlewski says: "Part of the support is already happening due to the big outsourcing contract that we just signed with Ericsson. Being a fast growing company and juggling a number of priorities, it's crucial for us to be able to hand over the more stable part of the business to reliable hands. Helping us with some of the dilemmas – how, when, and in what way we should move into the next generation network – and then helping us making that transformation will be vital. For a local company like Netia, it's not obvious how this has been done at other companies. It’s very beneficial for us to get help from a global company like Ericsson."

Computing industry leaders form Asia Cloud Computing Association to drive regional adoption, security, and policy

Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, EMC Corporation, Microsoft, NetApp, Nokia Siemens Networks, PLDT/Smart, Rackspace, REACH, Telenor, and Verizon, today announced they have formed Asia Cloud Computing Association (Asia Cloud), an open collaboration forum based in the Asia Pacific region.

The non-profit, vendor-neutral organization will address regional issues and challenges to adoption of cloud computing in Asia including privacy and security concerns, compliance and regulatory mandates, licensing models, service levels, and other market risks.

The research firm IDC estimates that the market for cloud computing in Asia outside Japan will grow to around US$1.3 billion this year and will continue to expand at a rate of approximately 40 percent a year until 2014 (Source: IDC, 2010), whereas in Japan, currently the second largest IT market globally, the cloud computing market is expected to grow to US$29.2 billion in 2015 (Source: Japan’s Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry 2010). However, security concerns, data storage regulations, low penetration of bandwidth in some countries, and government policies oriented to traditional computing models are inhibiting market growth.

“Cloud adoption in the Asia Pacific region has yet to reach its full potential. The regulatory landscape and varying market maturity levels have fragmented the adoption of cloud computing in the region,” noted Asia Cloud chairman and REACH chief information officer, Sundi Balu. “Organizations in Asia have voiced several concerns, particularly around security, service levels, and regulatory positions. There is a strong sense of urgency to have these concerns resolved by an open industry collaboration focused on the actual market realities and conditions in Asia. With Asia Cloud as a platform, key stakeholders can collaborate on issues specific to Asia and enable faster and more efficient adoption of cloud computing.”

The organization will evaluate global cloud standards produced by other industry associations and determine which can be adapted or advocated regionally. Initial working groups include those for public policy and regulatory issues, security, taxonomy, and carrier-grade applications. Anticipated deliverables for 2011 include best practices, a cloud-readiness index, development of a taxonomy, and the establishment of formal relationships with other organizations in cloud computing.

“Cloud computing will play a fundamental role in re-shaping how telecommunications service providers offer applications to end users and how their internal systems are implemented,” said Mike Murphy, initiator of the Carrier-Grade Cloud Computing Working Group and head of Technology APAC, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Asia Cloud Computing Association is a great vehicle for industry leaders to direct that re-shaping in a consistent manner.”

Study shows spending on mobile broadband up 40% year on year

Mobile Broadband Study 2010* covers HSPA+ use in France, Germany, Spain, UK

More than half of mobile broadband users are interested in high-speed mobile broadband or LTE
About 50% access mobile broadband on the go; one in five fixed users want to move to mobile broadband
Two-thirds of users access mobile broadband from devices smaller than laptops

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Mobile Broadband Study 2010 reported a 40% increase in average monthly spend on mobile broadband compared to 2009. This can be attributed to increased use of mobile broadband among existing customers and higher penetration of the service in market segments with more disposable income. Added to this, is the wide availability of bundled or subsidized offers for laptops and netbooks with the purchase of a mobile broadband connection.

“The study highlights that demand for mobile broadband is rapidly increasing due to its potential to deliver the connected experience people want, wherever they are,” said Beppe Donagemma, head of West & South Europe, Nokia Siemens Networks. “However, the quality of experience needs to improve to increase adoption. Operators need to prepare their networks to handle future volume and data traffic types to sustain mobile broadband growth.”

The majority of mobile broadband users in France, Germany, Spain and the UK want a better mobile broadband experience – faster data speeds, improved quality and better coverage. For a better experience, more than half of the respondents (58%) are interested in high-speed mobile broadband and 30% are even willing to pay a premium for it. The majority of users also said they would be interested in LTE as a preferred next step for improved broadband.

Almost a third of users said they intend to spend more time accessing the Internet via mobile broadband (31%), while a quarter of non-mobile broadband users expressed interest in taking it up.

The study also found that about 80% of the users accessed the Internet with a mobile broadband connection from home. According to the study, about half of the mobile broadband subscribers use mobile broadband on the go, and one in five fixed broadband users is looking to move to mobile broadband. This highlights that mobility remains an important aspect in Internet consumption.

The importance of mobility is further underscored by the finding that subscribers are more likely to use smaller devices, such as mini laptops/netbooks (34%), smartphones and smart devices (25%) to access mobile broadband, compared to PCs (27%) and standard laptops.

Operators can now crowdsource data on mobile broadband quality

Nokia Siemens Networks launches ‘Mobile Quality Analyzer for Mobile Broadband’

Operators can now get real-time data on connectivity bottlenecks in their networks to improve service quality and their customers’ experience. Nokia Siemens Networks has launched a Mobile Quality Analyzer (MQA) for Mobile Broadband that uses a mobile device client to report on the quality of 3G connections. It can combine this data with subjective feedback from subscribers, as they download data or surf the Internet, to get a clearer picture of their mobile broadband experience, effectively ‘crowdsourcing’* mobile network optimization. The application is part of the company’s Insight & Experience Framework**.

"The mobile broadband market is growing rapidly and improved broadband service quality is fast becoming a differentiator for operators globally," said Ludovic Magne, customer operations for business solutions sales at Nokia Siemens Networks. "MQA for Mobile Broadband provides operators with information to plan and efficiently adjust their network capacity as well as speed up resolution of customer complaints."

The application is one of the most cost effective systems to measure mobile broadband performance. Nokia Siemens Networks recommends that operators clearly outline to subscribers the client application’s use, exactly what sort of data it collects and how their privacy is protected. Take-up rate could be improved by offering bonuses such as additional SMS and voice minutes or data allowances to those who accept its use. MQA for Mobile Broadband can also provide real-time insight into device and network operation to customer service agents helping them accurately troubleshoot and resolve user issues.

MQA for Mobile Broadband consists of a client-server architecture based on technology from Ciqual. The measurement client can be downloaded by subscribers to their laptops, netbooks or notebooks with external or embedded 3G Modems. The client app evaluates signal strength in the cell and measures if broadband throughput rates are sufficient for the online services being accessed. The results are then sent to a measurement server for real-time display and analysis.

To complete the active tests that measure connectivity quality, MQA for Mobile Broadband can also periodically present an optional, brief questionnaire to assess the user’s personal experience. The client-software can be used without affecting price plans or causing tangible effects on speed of the broadband connection or even battery life.

In addition to the software solution, Nokia Siemens Network provides Server Hosting, Consultancy Reporting, Detailed Network Performance and End User Experience Analysis Services using Mobile Quality Analyzer for Mobile Broadband. Each of these service solutions is customized according to customer needs.

Nokia Siemens Networks to improve mobile networks across Afghanistan

Nokia Siemens Networks to improve mobile networks across Afghanistan Afghan Wireless selects telecoms supplier to enhance its capacity, coverage and agility

Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) plans to increase coverage, particularly in rural areas, and provide a range of new mobile services. Nokia Siemens Networks will modernize and expand the operator’s 2.5G (GSM/GPRS) network and provide subscriber data management and charging and billing platforms. As a result, more people will be able to access mobile services across the country.

With close to 17 million subscribers, Afghanistan’s current mobile penetration is around 57%*. This shows the great strides the country has taken since 2002 when there were no phones in the country**. At the same time, there remains a clear opportunity to expand into the underserved parts of the country and reach a larger segment of the rural population.

"We are committed to improving the mobile network for our people across Afghanistan. While this demanded overhauling our network to build additional capacity and introduce new technologies, we also had to protect our existing investments," said Daniel M. Florentine, Member Board of Directors AWCC. "We selected Nokia Siemens Networks as we fully trust its capabilities and expertise – the company will prepare us for a seamless transition to next-generation technologies."

"The mobile phone– and the opportunities it brings – are becoming a fundamental right for all citizens. As in the rest of the world, people across Afghanistan want widespread access to mobile networks," added Veqar ul Islam, head of sub region "east", Nokia Siemens Networks Middle East and Africa. "We can help Afghan Wireless deliver consistent services across the country and provide the required edge to outperform competition while reducing its capital and operational costs."

As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will upgrade the operator’s radio network with its energy-efficient Flexi Base Station and Flexi Base Station Controller to deliver increased capacity, connectivity and uninterrupted services. The small size and low energy consumption of these units make them highly suitable for operation in remote, rural areas. AWCC will also benefit from lower operational costs with the deployment of integrated packet-based transport capability that supports increased voice and data traffic on the installed base of network connections. In addition, the operator’s energy costs will be reduced as a result of swapping outdated mobile switches with state-of-the-art mobile softswitches.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also roll out its subscriber data management solution, including its One-NDS centralized subscriber repository so that AWCC can easily generate insights on end-user behavior to develop services catering to the specific needs of different users. The telecom suppliers’ charge@once billing platform will improve AWCC’s time-to-market for new and targeted marketing campaigns and combine services across pre-paid and post-paid subscribers. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver a complete range of professional services, including network implementation, care and system integration.

Nokia Siemens Networks first to make GSM networks ‘smarter’

New functionality enables simultaneous voice and data calls, quadruples device management capacity and improves efficiency

Smart device users will now be able to experience consistent, high-quality concurrent voice and data services, while using GSM networks. Nokia Siemens Networks is the first to introduce new functionality for GSM networks to harmonize the service experience for smart device users. This smart GSM network functionality also allows operators to manage up to four times more GSM devices on the existing networks.

“A steady decline in prices has led to an increasing use of smart phones even in markets that are yet to move to 3G,” said Prashant Agnihotri, head of GSM/EDGE product management, Nokia Siemens Networks. “It is natural for smart device users to desire round the clock connectivity and demand high data and voice service quality, when they are in a GSM coverage area. Our new functionality will ensure that operators can meet these demands in their GSM networks without making heavy investments or affecting the experience of other users.”

One of the main causes of network congestion is the signaling traffic generated by smart devices that automatically connect far more frequently to the network. Smart GSM network functionality quadruples signaling channel capacity. This additional capacity allows operators to handle up to four times as many devices in a single cell site. In addition, it improves GSM network efficiency by ensuring that traffic channel capacity is not wasted due to signaling congestion.

Smarter GSM networks will also allow users to receive or initiate voice calls while a data connection is active. Without support for the concurrent use of voice and data, incoming voice calls are currently diverted to the voicemail, when there is an active data connection, for instance, when the handset is downloading emails. This has been a common source of frustration for the mobile users.

The new functionality can be introduced to Nokia Siemens Networks’ radio networks via simple software upgrades and is available for deployment now.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ GSM solutions for smart devices builds upon its previously introduced Smart Networks concept for 3G, enabling operators’ WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+ smart device users to enjoy faster mobile broadband upload and download speeds, longer battery life and better coverage. In addition, operators improve their total cost of ownership. An independent analyst report confirms that smartphones, which are on the company’s 3G networks, enjoy an average of 30% longer battery lifetime and generate up to 50% lower amounts of signaling traffic. Operators can now extend this improved service experience and efficiency into their GSM networks as well. DroidCon: Tattoos and Android™ benchmark ambitions put Sony Ericsson in focus

Sony Ericsson was the benchmark for JavaME, and wants to be the same for Android™. That, and a bunch of temporary tattoos, put Sony Ericsson in focus at DroidCon.

Last week Sony Ericsson participated in the two day DroidCon event in London, UK. The event gathered 400+developers and industry professionals, all keen on discussing the hot topics in the Android world. The Developer World team from Sony Ericsson was there to talk to developers about Android development, and spread the word about Sony Ericsson´s commitment to Android.

Sony Ericsson also had one keynote session at the event, where Karl-Johan Dahlström and Erik Hellman presented their thoughts under the headline Android behind the scenes. In the session, Karl-Johan Dahlström emphasised Sony Ericsson´s strong commitment to Android by stating that Sony Ericsson is aiming to be the Android benchmark, similar to how the company became the JavaME benchmark back in the days. Dahlström explained how Sony Ericsson developed that platform since the early start into an industry standard well known for its performance, stability and consistency.

- We will do the same with Android, Dahlström said.

Dahlström and Hellman went on to explain how this will happen, by naming a number of strategies where the most important one undoubtedly is to contribute even more to the Android Open Source Project. The duo also shared some insights in the design behind Sony Ericsson’s phones, by explaining how design concepts like Human Curvature™ and Precision by Tension™ are used as cornerstones in the creation of a great user experience.

- Going forward Sony Ericsson will have a strong focus on Android, and will continue to build the successful Xperia™ brand, by bringing together the world of Android and the world of Sony in beautiful hardware and software designs, Dahlström said.

A steady stream of visitors passed through the Sony Ericsson booth during the two days. Many were interested in the new Sony Ericsson LiveView™, a micro display that connects to an Android phone by Bluetooth™. By popular demand, the Developer World team made a not yet released pre-version of the LiveView SDK temporarily available to developers during the hackathon that took place in during one of the nights. A number of exited Android developers then went on to create LiveView plugins all night.

But the biggest hit of all at the event was the temporary tattoos provided by Sony Ericsson. A long line of eager developers were happy to get their own Developer World tattoo.

Web SDK Packager to become open sourced under the MIT License

SAMSUNG NX100 AND OK GO "LAST LEAF" VIDEO COLLABORATION PREMIERES TODAY

Grammy-winning artists launch music video filmed using Samsung’s NX100

Ridgefield Park, NJ – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, has announced the release of the music video for indie band OK Go’s latest song, “Last Leaf.” The video was filmed using the new Samsung NX100, Samsung’s latest innovation in premium camera technology, and is available to view today at www.cre8yourworld.com.

The “Last Leaf” video was made using thousands of photographs taken with the Samsung NX100, woven together to create a stop motion animation clip, demonstrating the NX100’s technical capabilities and creative versatility. The images were combined with hand-drawn animations created by the band, along with award-winning animator Geoff McFettridge. The collaboration marks a new artistic direction for OK Go, whose previous videos have been composed of one-take live-action clips.

The partnership between OK Go and Samsung has been documented in a behind-the-scenes series, also filmed with the NX100, which can be seen at .cre8yourworld.com">www.cre8yourworld.com. The documentary follows OK Go and their collaborators as they go through each stage of creating the video. The final clip in the series, which goes live on November 9, 2010, will show how OK Go achieved their creative vision using the NX100.

OK Go is recognized throughout the world for their groundbreaking and inventive music videos, which have received more than 125 million online views. Videos include “Here it Goes Again” (also known as “Treadmills Dance”), which features the band performing a choreographed routine across eight treadmills in one continuous take. The band’s latest video and single, “White Knuckles,” achieved a million YouTube hits in 24 hours when it was released in October 2010.

“Samsung’s been great because we had a creative idea and they had the tools to help us make it,” said Damian Kulash, lead singer of OK Go.

“We are impressed and inspired by the band’s memorable and imaginative music videos,” said Mr. SangJin Park, President of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics. “The NX100, an easy-to-use but high-quality camera, was the perfect tool to let the band express their creativity and experiment with new ideas. The camera is compact and portable enough to take with you wherever you go, but powerful enough to realize your creative ideas through great pictures. The ‘Last Leaf’ music video is a perfect example of how the NX100 enables you to bring your inspiration to life.”

The Samsung NX100 was designed to make taking beautiful pictures simple, quick and easy. By incorporating the revolutionary 20mm wide i-Function Lens, with both automatic and fast manual settings, users can control the camera’s settings via the lens, without having to take the camera off target. Given the recent popularity of the intuitive i-Function Lens, Samsung will include the i-Function technology in all of their future lenses for the NX range, including five additional lenses that will be introduced next year. Samsung has also provided a new firmware update, making the i-Function Lens compatible with the NX10.

The NX100 boasts the compact size and lightweight advantages of being a mirrorless camera, while delivering the image quality of a DSLR. Available in two different colors, the design of the NX100, inspired by the shape of a dewdrop forming on a leaf, is also sleek and stylish. The camera features the fastest Auto Focus (AF) of any interchangeable lens camera to date, making it even easier to have the perfect picture at your fingertips.
