Ericsson
Kjell Hansson is unique within telecoms. His impressive 49 years in the industry have been spent with, or affiliated to, Ericsson. As the company’s longest-serving employee, he has witnessed many changes, including the birth of mobility and its evolution through the data revolution towards the Networked Society. He says Ericsson offers him as many opportunities now as it did when his career kicked off almost half a century ago.
At the other end of the scale, Alexander Danilin, 24, is just nine months into what he predicts will be a fruitful career with the company. He says Ericsson is an attractive company for young innovative professionals who are enthusiastic about transforming society through communications.
Danilin predicts that Ericsson’s increasing reputation as an information and communication technologies (ICT) player, vertical-industry partner, and innovator in a multimedia world will see it become an even bigger magnet for the best young talent.
His experience is shared by young people around the world as Ericsson continues to attract highly talented individuals in the 175 countries where we operate.
Hansson joined Ericsson via a vocational school run by telecoms and computer components manufacturer Standard Radio & Telefon. He was 15 years old and the year was 1962 – the same year that the Beatles first single was released in the UK; the Cuban Missile Crisis took place and the first James Bond movie was released.
His subsequent career development from laboratory assistant to telecoms engineer saw him working on products for the civil aviation and computing sectors.
As a member of the GSM project team in the late 1980s, he helped to develop products that were to become part of the birth of modern mobility – including the RBS 200, the first radio base station cabinet.
"Some people asked why we were spending money on GSM," Hansson says. "But that’s usually the case with new technology. You don’t realize the advantages until the technology is being used."
It could be argued that the same thinking is just as relevant today. Almost 25 years later, Hansson is still helping to break barriers in mobile technology. As a specialist working within Ericsson’s Enclosure Solution team, he helps to develop equipment for radio remote units on masts. The team produces connectors and cables for the entire company, including the cutting-edge RBS 6000 radio base station, which is revolutionizing next-generation data communication.
Hansson says his experience, age and length of service at Ericsson are respected by colleagues and management at the company.
"I’ve built an entire career at Ericsson," he says. "I’ve been loyal to the company and the company has been loyal to me. A lot happens in almost half a century. In retrospect, I now realize the fantastic developments I’ve worked with.
"The company has offered me many opportunities, and I’ve also had the privilege of working with good and helpful colleagues."
But Hansson’s Ericsson journey is not yet over. He intends to work until he is 65, by which time he will have spent more than 50 years with the company.
Hansson says he is happy to be a role model for younger employees at the company.
"We have an excellent and supportive learning culture at Ericsson, and I’m always very happy to pass on knowledge and advice to those who are just starting out at the company," he says.
"As a specialist, it’s also part of my job to give as much help and advice as possible to colleagues. It’s a part of my job that I really enjoy, and I think those receiving the advice also enjoy it. It’s really good to pass on the torch."
Meanwhile, Russian-born Danilin, who holds MSc and MBA degrees, has yet to complete his first year of employment at Ericsson.
He has been employed at the company’s Multimedia business unit since June 2010 under the Multimedia Talent Attraction Program.
"Ericsson is really changing by the minute," he says. "Of course we have the traditional expertise we’ve always had, but the company is also heading in an exciting direction in terms of the developments in how the world communicates with and consumes multimedia content.
"Ericsson is playing a central role in that. It’s a very attractive opportunity for any young telecom, business or ICT professional to be able to play a part in that transition and make a real difference to how we’re all connected or communicate."
Danilin says the ways of working at Ericsson are also appealing, with many opportunities for new employees to learn and develop professionally.
"I really like the approach to work," he says. "We’re all expected to find the thing to which we can contribute the most. This is excellent for creative thinking and innovation. I call it freedom with responsibility.
"I think the way Ericsson is changing, especially in relation to multimedia services, will attract lots of young professionals, just as it attracted me."

French operator SFR said that the release of an operating system upgrade to version Android 2.3 Gingerbread Smartphone HTC Desire HD will be held, tentatively in early April. Recall, HTC Desire HD - this is a functional model of the previous year. Of the characteristics is sufficient to mention a 1-GHz processor, 4.3-inch touchscreen Super LCD and 8-megapixel camera capable of recording high-definition video 720p, so it became clear it - a real flagship (although the end of 2010).
Since its release a device running an operating system Android 2.2, and now, apparently, it's time to upgrade to Android 2.3. As already mentioned, for France and SFR set period of early April, but it is logical to wait for the Android 2.3 for HTC Desire HD in other countries in similar terms, although it is still not confirmed officially. By the way, before it was that the update will be available only after the release of HTC Desire S, that is, the closer to summer.

Nokia Siemens Networks-led collaborative research projects contributed to development of 100 Gigabit Ethernet Transport and IMT-Advanced technologies
Two collaborative research projects led by Nokia Siemens Networks have been awarded the Award of Excellence in Gold by the Celtic Core Group at the 2011 Celtic-Plus* Event in Heidelberg, Germany on March 29. The Celtic Core Group selected 100 Gigabit Ethernet Transport Technologies** (100GET) and Wireless World Initiative New Radio +*** (WINNER+) for the award for outstanding research performance and contribution to world-wide standardization. Nokia Siemens Networks led the WINNER+ project and the second phase of the 100GET project.
The outcome of the 100GET project is expected to enable operators to cost-efficiently increase the transmission capacity of transport networks, and provide a high bandwidth and quality to effectively meet the data deluge.
By fostering consensus building in standardization, the WINNER+ project has paved the way for more efficient future radio access technologies as part of IMT-Advanced wireless technology.
“Nokia Siemens Networks believes that the communication industry has a responsibility to enable the growth of other industries and improve the quality of life for individuals,” said Hossein Moiin, chief technology officer of Nokia Siemens Networks. “Collaborative research projects such as Celtic 100GET and WINNER+ verify new technology approaches and prepare the ground for achieving consensus in standardization at an early stage, before commercialization. Nokia Siemens Networks is highly committed to continuous innovation and collaboration on joint R&D projects with governments, industry players, research organizations and universities across the world.”
The 100GET project designed and verified new networking concepts and physical layer technologies for 100 Gbps Ethernet-based transport networks. One of the key achievements of this project is development of new optical technologies that enable spectrally-efficient 100 Gbps transmission and the re-use of existing fiber, in addition to the development of low-cost transponders that feature low power consumption.
Another key achievement of this project is the adoption of Internet protocols and concepts in transport networks to simplify network operations. The project also developed a multi-modal approach, wherein cost-efficient network planning and deployment as well as network operation and management assume significance along with development of a new technology, to reduce capital and operating costs for operators.
The collaborative research project WINNER+ evaluated, further developed and optimized technologies to improve International Mobile Telecommunication-Advanced (IMT-Advanced) standards. The research was focused on Advanced Radio Resource Management (RRM), spectrum technologies, Network Coding and relaying, device-to-device communications, Multiple-Antenna Systems and Coordinated Multipoint. The project also significantly contributed to the global evaluation process for IMT-Advanced proposals in the Radio Telecommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R). This contribution comprised evaluation according to ITU-R requirements and extensive simulations.
As the WINNER+ project partners agreed on basic concepts and algorithms, and basically adopted these results for their contributions to 3GPP for LTE and IMT-Advanced, the project results were exploited by 3GPP for a smooth and fast development of LTE toward a world-wide accepted standard. The results show that collaborative research in the pre-commercialization phase of a new technology is an important means of consensus building for future standards.
Apart from leading the WINNER+ project and the second phase of the 100GET project, Nokia Siemens Networks also led one of the 100GET sub-projects developing the conceptual design, components, network optimization methods and automation technologies of a cost-efficient 100 Gbps transport platform for Carrier-grade Ethernet and IP services.
The outcomes of these projects are joint achievements of the collaborative research by the consortium partners comprising telecom operators, vendors and other companies, universities, and research institutions. The results are being implemented by the project partners into their areas of business and respective portfolios, eventually benefiting the whole telecom industry and end users.

It was learned that this fall will be the second-generation Tablet Lenovo LePad. This was announced at a banquet events in 2011 Chinese IT Leadership Summit itself CEO of Lenovo Yuantsin Yang (Yang Yuanqing). We remind the international release of the first Lenovo LePad scheduled for June. The device is equipped with 10-inch touchscreen, 1.2-GHz processor (Platform Qualcomm Snapdragon) and is based on the OS Android 2.2 with a modification LeOS. The handset supports 3G and should be quite affordable.
It is not clear whether similar to the original second Lenovo LePad, details Yuantsin left to themselves. He only mentioned that the new model is thinner than its predecessor, and designed it together with him, but other people. Perhaps, Lenovo LePad 2 also receives an operating system Android, but it certainly is not yet known. Release is scheduled in September-October this year, it is hoped that the new tablet would also be inexpensive, at least, cheaper iPad 2.

Hi,
Great to see all the comments to the blog post. I will try to answer some of the questions together with Rikard Skogberg from the Products blog.
To begin with the questions on the Xperia X10. The Xperia X10 boot loader doesn’t support to be unlocked in a secure way. However, we listened to the requests and the Xperia 2011 products have support to unlock to boot loader in a secure way.
Explaining what we mean by “secure way”; when the boot loader is unlocked the phone is wiped. This means that DRM certificates and sensitive keys are deleted along with the user data partition (containing downloaded apps and games, all user data like phonebook, sms etc – very similar to a factory reset) . This functionality is added to the Xperia 2011 products boot loader. It is not supported by the Xperia X10 and will not be supported on the Gingerbread upgrade of Xperia X10.
The boot loader is not updated in the Gingerbread upgrade due technical reasons and the risks involved. For example, if the boot loader was to be updated with the Gingerbread upgrade and the upgrade fails for some reason, it would mean that the phone is bricked. So in general we never upgrade the boot loader when we upgrade phones in the market.
Unfortunately there is no way you can know if the phone can be unlocked when purchasing the phone, it will be based on regional and customer configurations. This is one of the limitations. However if you purchase an operator customized phone it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is SIM-locked.
The only way to determine if you can unlock the boot loader for your phone is to connect your phone to the Fastboot tool in the Android™ SDK. If your phone can connect to Fastboot, the boot loader can be unlocked. It will however not be needed to update your phone to access this functionality. Depending on the original configuration of your phone, it will be either be possible or not possible to unlock the boot loader. No phone updates are required to enable this functionality.

Assistance for Japanese operators following earthquake and tsunami

Ericsson
Ericsson is working with its customers in Japan to assist with network repair operations following the earthquake and tsunami that struck the country on March 11. This includes providing a chartered helicopter and the provisioning of 150 satellite phones in the Tohoku region of northern Japan.
Transport and communications infrastructure in the Tohoku region was severely damaged during the double disaster. Damage to roads means that some areas are reachable only by air transport.
To support Japanese operators, an Ericsson-chartered Bell 205 helicopter has arrived in the area and will begin operations March 31. Crewed by personnel with experience in disaster zones, the helicopter will carry Ericsson employees and necessary repair equipment to support in the network maintenance, rebuilding and repair tasks faced by all of Ericsson’s customers.
The helicopter will also offer Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operating in the region the opportunity to transport goods such as food, water and clothes when on-board space is available.
Repairs in the mobile networks include restoring damaged radio base stations and related technical equipment, restoring power, fixing damaged towers and replacing concrete foundations.
In addition to the helicopter, Ericsson is supporting its customer SoftBank with 150 satellite phones, 100 of which were shipped March 25. These are being used to coordinate repair work in areas where mobile communication infrastructure has yet to be restored.
Two Ericsson Response volunteers were also dispatched to the region, to support SoftBank in getting the satellite phones up and running. The additional 50 satellite phones were shipped March 29.
The Ericsson Response volunteers are schedule to stay in the region until April 4. They will remain on standby to assist the UN, should that need arise.
Fredrik Alatalo, President of Ericsson Japan, says Ericsson will continue to support its Japanese customers’ efforts to restore communications networks.
“We’ve been in close contact with our customers since the immediate aftermath of the terrible earthquake and tsunami,” he says. “From the outset we have offered our help to customers, with our complete organization in Japan fully committed. Our current efforts, including the chartering of the helicopter and providing satellite phones, are part of that. We will continue to work closely with our customers to support in any way we can.”
Networks in the Tohoku region, that took the biggest impact from the tsunami, continue to be worst affected. Following heavy traffic overload in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, networks in the Tokyo region are currently operating at normal levels, as are the networks south of Tokyo.

Messina municipality launches SMS based information for citizens using Ericsson IPX’s campaign manager.
On February 14th the Messina Municipality in Italy announced the launch of its INFOSMS service in collaboration with Ericsson IPX. The customised application allows the broadcast of regional information via SMS creating a new channel of communication between the people and the local government. The service allows users to opt-in via the web and personalise the information they receive. The INFOSMS system can easily be replicated for other regions with IPX not just handling messaging but also management of the subscriber databases.
The system was created partly in response to the floods and mudslides which hit Messina in October 2009. A customised messaging application using the IPX automatic sending system was developed to help improve emergency communications with the people in the region. The service, which is still available, provided a rapid, reliable and accessible service which helped in bringing immediate support to those in need. Recognising the success of utilising the mobile channel in this situation, the INFOSMS solution was developed to help improve communications between the people and administration whilst improving the efficiency and transparency of services offered by the Messina Municipality.
With INFOSMS people opt-in via the Messina Municipality website, where they provide personal information and their mobile phone number. At this point, they can then subscribe to up to four different information channels:
AVVISI – news and alerts relating to the municipality
INFOMETEO – weather forecast information
NEWS – cultural events and institutional news
TRAFFICO – traffic and travel information
Locals are able to subscribe to as many or as few of these services as they like, creating their own personalised news streams. Geographic area can also be selected, adding a further layer of personalisation. Once a user has signed up to INFOSMS, they can manage which channels they will be able to receive and even completely unsubscribe simply by sending an SMS to a dedicated mobile number. The service is completely free to the user and is available only to residents of the Messina municipality.
The INFOSMS solution is based on the Ericsson IPX platform with an automatic SMS sending system and additional applications, tailored to meet the needs of the municipality. IPX provides the web interface which is interconnected to IPX Database Management as well as access to the IPX campaign manager tool which enables the sending of SMS to subscribers. Messina municipality has access to the tools required to operate the service autonomously whilst the subscriber database is stored in the IPX Italy premises where it can be easily maintained and updated.
The INFOSMS solution marks Ericsson IPX’s move into offering blended multi-channel solutions of both Web and SMS and is serving as a pilot for these kinds of services. Whereas IPX has previously provided pure connectivity through SMS, by offering a web interface and database management, the company is able to support regional administrations in offering a digital communication channel to its citizens, in turn driving involvement and interaction by the population in daily institutional activities.

Nokia files second ITC complaint against Apple
Alleges Apple infringes additional Nokia patents in virtually all products
Espoo, Finland - Nokia has filed a further complaint with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) alleging that Apple infringes additional Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, tablets and computers.
The seven Nokia patents in the new complaint relate to Nokia's pioneering innovations that are now being used by Apple to create key features in its products in the areas of multi-tasking operating systems, data synchronization, positioning, call quality and the use of Bluetooth accessories.
This second ITC complaint follows the initial determination in Nokia's earlier ITC filing, announced by the ITC on Friday, March 25. Nokia does not agree with the ITC's initial determination that there was no violation of Section 337 in that complaint and is waiting to see the full details of the ruling before deciding on the next steps in that case.
In addition to the two ITC complaints, Nokia has filed cases on the same patents and others in Delaware, US and has further cases proceeding in Mannheim, Dusseldorf and the Federal Patent Court in Germany, the UK High Court in London and the District Court of the Hague in the Netherlands, some of which will come to trial in the next few months.
"Our latest ITC filing means we now have 46 Nokia patents in suit against Apple, many filed more than 10 years before Apple made its first iPhone," said Paul Melin, Vice President, Intellectual Property at Nokia. "Nokia is a leading innovator in technologies needed to build great mobile products and Apple must stop building its products using Nokia's proprietary innovation."
During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 43 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 10,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of handheld device and mobile communications technologies, which is also demonstrated by Nokia's strong patent position.

The third-largest U.S. mobile operator Sprint Nextel has announced its opposition to the acquisition of AT & T for $ 39 billion of the operator T-Mobile USA. The deal, according to Sprint Nextel, requires approval from the Ministry of Justice (USA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and will cause many congressional hearings.
According to the same operator, the above acquisition would nullify all the progress made almost thirty years ago, the efforts (by governments and courts) to create competition, innovation, jobs and investment in the telecommunications market. Sprint Nextel believes that if the deal is approved, then in the U.S. duopoly arises in the face of the operators AT & T and Verizon, which will receive control over the market wireless technologies, and will not allow other telecommunications carriers to competitive politics.

Unlocking the boot loader in the new Xperia™ smartphones

With its new generation of 2011 Xperia™ smartphones, Sony Ericsson will allow advanced developers to unlock the boot loader in a secure and legal way. We will enable this opportunity later this spring, although it will only be possible for certain releases of these phones.
Find out the details after the jump.
Over the few last years, Sony Ericsson has received several requests from the Android™ community to allow advanced developers to unlock the boot loader of their phones. Up to now, the answer has been “No”. The reason is that we haven’t had a secure technical solution in place to support this. Furthermore, the boot loader could not be shared since that would violate important business agreements with many of our partners, such as operator customers and developers who want to protect their apps and games from being ripped from the secure area in the phones.
But we are developing a solution for this. It will be possible to unlock the boot loader for certain releases of our 2011 Xperia™ phones, such as Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ pro and Xperia™ PLAY. But it is important to point out that this will only be possible for certain releases of the phones. Basically, your phone has to fulfill a number of requirements. For example, you can’t unlock the boot loader if you have a SIM lock protected phone.
There are other requirements as well, depending on your market and the original configuration of your phone. The only way to determine if you can unlock the boot loader for your phone is to connect your phone to the Fastboot tool in the Android™ SDK. If your phone can connect to Fastboot, the boot loader can be unlocked. For earlier products such as the Xperia™ X10, we cannot allow the boot loader to be unlocked due to technical and legal reasons.
Also, please note that you may void the warranty of your phone if you unlock the boot loader. See your phone’s warranty statement for details. Additionally, due to the modified phone software, Sony Ericsson’s repair network may not be able to properly test and repair your phone according to our normal procedures. Consequently, if Sony Ericsson does perform a warranty repair, Sony Ericsson may charge you a handling fee for any additional incurred costs due to your modification of the software.
If you unlock the boot loader and then flash a custom unsigned ROM to your phone, the custom unsigned ROM will not have gone through the thorough tests that we run for each phone and software version that we release. Because of that, the custom unsigned ROM might not work properly on your phone. Certain functions may cease to work, and the performance of the device might not be ideal. You might damage your phone permanently. In worst case, it will cause physical injuries or material damage, for example, due to the phone overheating.
Therefore, you should only unlock the boot loader of your phone if you are an advanced developer with good knowledge of the technology and risks involved. We strongly recommend that standard users NOT unlock the boot loader, as it is not needed. We are proud to deliver great phone experiences through our rigorously tested and official software releases.
However, we hope that this is a useful service for advanced developers, and demonstrates that Sony Ericsson is listening to and working with the open developer world. We will provide more details about this service later this spring. Stay tuned for more information…

Ericsson
The boldest strategic recommendations to Ericsson for alliances and acquisitions in energy and healthcare earned the top prize in the Sixth Annual International Tech Strategy Business Case Competition, held on March 24-26, 2011 at Boston University.
The winning team of four students from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada consisted of Hussein Govani, James Larsen, Daniel Moro and Paul von Martels. Standing behind an oversized cardboard check symbolizing the team’s USD 25,000 win, von Martels explained their tactics: "We decided we needed to be bold and say that Ericsson needs to become fully integrated, from devices all the way to the cloud.
"Even though there are opportunities for natural, organic growth, we decided that Ericsson should be looking for partnerships and acquisitions," he said. "We researched and screened and came up with two companies we thought were beneficial to Ericsson."
The problem that the teams faced for this version of the business case competition was how to devise Ericsson’s strategy for doing business specifically with the energy and healthcare sectors in the Networked Society. After they presented their results at the semi-finals stage, the groups were mixed up and then teamed with participants from Global Perspectives Leadership Program to propose applications in either energy or healthcare.
Kristoffer Sjöström, Head of Security Operations at Ericsson and a member of the company’s Global Perspectives Leadership program, said: "We understood fairly quickly that we had very different backgrounds. Those of us from Ericsson were very strong in telecoms, and some other team members were strong in marketing or engineering, so we leveraged our different capabilities."
Sarah Friedman, a student from Haas School of Business at the University of California in Berkeley, said the mix was a great idea. "The ideas we started with are pretty far from what we presented in the end," she added. "We stepped outside the box and came up with different conclusions,” she explained, adding that this part of the competition would be the one she would remember the most.
In the early afternoon, Georges Antoun, VP Product Area IP and Broadband at Ericsson and Mike Lawson, Professor and Senior Associate Dean at the Boston University School of Management, judged the entries. Winners included a team that came up with a healthcare app for pets.
The main competitors, however, were center-stage again by the evening. Ericsson’s Andreea Timberlake, VP Program Management at Region North America based in Dallas, Texas, judged them for the second year in a row. "I think the specificity of the case this year within healthcare and energy allowed people to do more research and find more facts and figures. That stood out," she said.
Timberlake praised the winners for daring to make a strong recommendation and for identifying Ericsson as an architect, not just a player, in the Networked Society.
All competitors had been up for 24 hours straight, but these Canadians were not planning on catching up on sleep just yet.
Team member James Larsen admitted: "The hockey team is in town and we thought we’d celebrate with them first before going home."

In the tools OVI Publisher appeared references to a new device called Nokia T7-00. Previously, such a device is not mentioned anywhere, and now, except the name of him almost nothing is known, and therefore can only speculate. However, it is probably not the case, since Nokia T7-00, as indicated in the system, running the operating system Symbian ^ 3 and has a display with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels.

The index "T" for smartphones Finnish company's new, probably preparing another line of devices, such as "E" - for business, "N" - multimedia and so on. However, it is not clear on what a new series focused smartphones, if any, of course, is planned. And yet still wait for details about the device.

Sony Ericsson is to roll out its biggest campaign in two years as it launches three Xperia smartphones, including its 'PlayStation phone', which it hopes will revive the company's fortunes.
Sony Ericsson: launching biggest campaign for two years
The push, believed to involve a spend of £4m, will support the roll-out of three handsets on 1 April: Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo and the 'PlayStation phone' Xperia Play. Ads will run on TV, outdoor, press and online.
The bulk of the marketing will be devoted to promoting the Play device, which features a PlayStation control pad for gaming.
Sony Ericsson will release teaser activity to generate anticipation ahead of the launch. A cover-wrap on the London edition of free-sheet Metro will direct readers to a pop-up Play-themed showroom in the capital's West End.
According to Sony Ericsson marketing director David Hilton, the brand will raise its investment in digital marketing from 25% to 40% of total campaign spend.
A 10-day Facebook campaign will precede the launch, where the first 10 Xperia Play handsets will be given away by the brand's commercial partners, including O2, Three, Vodafone, Capital FM, Xfm, Tesco, Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and gaming website Gamespot.
On 31 March, Sony Ericsson will 'take over' the home pages of Facebook, YouTube and Gamespot with display ads. It will also run experiential activity, using branded rickshaws in central London.
Sony Ericsson claims Play is the first smartphone designed for gaming. Several PlayStation games have already been developed for the device, and will include unique features for it, such as multiplayer gaming via wi-fi.
Hilton said many of the gaming aspects had been developed with Google's Android team, which supplies the operating system for the handsets, as the search company plans to move further into gaming.
