Asus Eee Pad Transformer Android 3.1 Update Rolling Out Next Week

Back on May 17th, both Asus and Acer confirmed their Android Honeycomb tablets, the Eee Pad Transformer and Iconia Tab A500, would be receiving a boost up to Android 3.1 Honeycomb at some point during the month of June. Well, it appears that Eee Pad Transformer owners won’t have to wait too long into the month to see the update as it appears it will be rolling out next week.

According to some little birds, Asus is going to be releasing the update over the air to the Eee Pad Transformer at some point during the first week of June, possibly as soon as Monday when Computex kicks off in Tapai, Taiwan.

In addition to rolling out the update, Asus is expected to reveal some sort of phone/tablet hybrid that might work like the Motorola Atrix 4G and its dock, only Asus’ smartphone would plug into a tablet device. There is a rumor that it could possibly be called PadFone but that has yet to be confirmed.

As for the Eee Pad Transformer and Android 3.1, the device is slowly making its way back onto shelves as ASUS has ramped up production for North America after the device was met with rabid popularity. Android 3.1 will only make the tablet device more appealing as the software will add, among other things, USB support.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming 2012 says Samsung boss

Yep, your S II already has a successor

Samsung has confirmed that it is already working on a Samsung Galaxy S III for 2012 as well as working on a 4G version of the company’s Tab tablet for later in 2011.

J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile communications division, has told Dow Jones Newswires in an exclusive interview that “Samsung may launch a third version of its Galaxy S smartphone in the first half of next year after launching a second-generation version called Galaxy S II last month.”

Already selling over 1.3million handsets in the first month, the Samsung Galaxy S II is likely to become of one the phones of the year, and continues the company’s success of the first Samsung Galaxy S smartphone launched last year.

It’s no surprise then that Samsung will want the “run” to continue, however this is the first time the company has officially gone on record to state that a new handset will be made, heck the rumours of such a device haven’t even started yet.

But it’s not just a remake of it’s flagship device that Samsung is teasing us with, but the promise of a 4G version of it’s Samsung Galaxy Tab (that’s the 7-inch model) later this year:

"The race for 4G (fourth-generation) has already started," J.K. Shin said in the same Dow Jones Newswires interview. "4G transition is inevitable particularly for tablets because it requires faster download speeds than smartphones to handle bigger volume content."

According to Dow Jones, the new tablet will be an evolution of and an enhanced version of its Galaxy Tab models, Shin said, without providing further details.

Ericsson to connect Panasonic Toughbooks with mobile broadband

All new Panasonic Toughbook models will feature Ericsson's mobile broadband module
Toughbook notebooks and tablets - used in the toughest environments - will now offer the benefits of embedded mobile broadband
The HSPA module offers download speeds of up to 21Mbps and upload speeds reaching 5.8Mbps
The first Panasonic Toughbook models, the CF-53 and CF-31 mk2, are already available
All users of new Panasonic Toughbook models launched in 2011 will enjoy access to a flawless internet connection, even in the most inhospitable environments, thanks to Ericsson's (NASDAQ: ERIC) F5521gw embedded HSPA Evolution mobile broadband module.

The Panasonic Toughbook has led the market for rugged laptops for nine years and has 65.3 percent of the European market (2010, VDC). Panasonic Toughbooks, which come in both notebook and tablet models, are built to withstand drops, spills, dust and grime, and are used in the toughest environments - ranging from construction sites to the tallest mountaintops - around the world. In these extreme conditions, often far from any fixed connection, mobile connectivity is crucial to effective communications.

Stephen Yeo, Marketing Director, Panasonic Computer Products Europe, says: "Ericsson's F5521gw module is an ideal addition to our market-leading Panasonic Toughbooks. The long battery life, low power consumption, high performance and cost-effectiveness are exactly what Toughbook users need as they work in environments that would destroy the average laptop."

Mats Norin, Vice President, Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules, says: "Ericsson has a vision of more than 50 billion connected devices by 2020, and Ericsson mobile broadband modules will play an important part in connecting every segment of our society. Ericsson ConsumerLab research shows that, regardless of the device they use, many people are discovering how difficult life is when they are not continuously connected. Internet everywhere is becoming a prerequisite for consumers as well as professional users. Devices will therefore be required to work in increasingly varied environments and situations, and Ericsson can help ensure those experiences are of the highest quality."

The latest Panasonic Toughbook models are already available, and more products will be launched throughout 2011. Panasonic Toughbooks feature the Windows 7 operating system and Intel processors.

When launched in September 2010, the F5521gw module was the world's first embedded mobile broadband module specifically designed for notebooks and other consumer electronics to support 21Mbps HSPA Evolution networks. The module comes in a standard PCI Express Mini Card format. Two new modules in even smaller and thinner form factors, also supporting 21Mbps download speeds, will be available later this year to fit even smaller devices, such as media players and personal navigation devices. The F5521gw module is based on the proven ST-Ericsson Thor 21Mbps thin modem, which works on both WCDMA/HSPA and GSM/EDGE networks.

News CenterAgile’s role in Ericsson’s software success

Ericsson’s emergence as one of the world’s largest software companies may be a surprise to some outside the telecoms industry. But software has been one of our success stories for many years – especially following a customer-focused transformation of software-development processes to increase customer responsiveness, reduce lead times and improve quality. The industry-recognized Agile approach has played a key role.

Gunnar Heldebro, Head of R&D at Ericsson’s Business Unit Multimedia, is one of the key drivers behind the transformation, which he describes as radical. He says the Agile approach plays an important role in fulfilling Ericsson’s end-to-end streamlined software-development objectives.

The vast majority of Ericsson’s Business Unit Multimedia’s portfolio is software-related. About 2,300 of the unit’s 2,850 R&D engineers work directly or indirectly with Agile practices.

“We are about five years into our overall software-transformation project now,” he says. “For me, Agile development is important because it is about empowering developers by creating an environment where they have control over their work.
“It’s about iterative, incremental development, close to the customer, with the ability to divide big tasks into smaller steps, related to a wanted position of some sort.”

Heldebro says Agile methodology easily adapts to rapid changes in the software market.

“It differs from the old sequential, so-called ‘waterfall’ approach, where the future was believed to be predictable and which resulted in long lead times, costly R&D and sometimes poor quality,” he says.

“The customer-focused approach of our new software practices, including Agile, is an important part of our vision of providing the best software services and products. We are not just using Agile because it exists. We are using it to enhance our Streamline Development Framework so we can provide customers with cutting-edge products and services.”

Heldebro says the Agile end-to-end approach involves working closely with customers the entire way through the development and delivery process.

He says there are many examples of Ericsson successfully applying the Agile end-to-end approach – such as delivering the Business Communication Suite (BCS) solution to Deutsche Telekom (DT).

“The direction was set through close interaction with DT’s marketing department, discussing their vision and wanted position of BCS towards its customers,” Heldebro says. “Once the development started, we met regularly to demo what had been agreed on, discuss progress and the next step. They are very pleased with the solution, which has now been launched in Germany, with plans to deploy it in other countries.

“Ericsson also learned a lot from working closely with DT throughout the process.”

Heldebro adds: “The way Ericsson applies Agile practices differs between product lines. Agile practices with close customer interaction are more prevalent when introducing new products, as well as implementing customer-specific requirements. But Agile is highly relevant for any type of development, also for standards-based products or when addressing a broader market.

“Most of Ericsson’s development organizations use Agile practices today in some form or another.”

Ericsson has also developed a methodology to judge the progress of the transformation across a range of factors. Feedback is used to further improve the process.

“We have seen a substantial improvement in the ratings for all of these factors,” Heldebro says. “Our customers are much happier with us today than when we started the program. We have extended the transformation process to try to better understand customer and market needs. This includes a lot of ongoing activities in the area of business architecture and business modeling, as well as user-experience-driven development.”

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Latin America GNOC starts operations

NII Holdings is the first to benefit from the Global Network Operations Center in Brazil
The GNOC provides economies of scale and improves network efficiency for regional operators
Nokia Siemens Networks announced the start of operations for its Global Network Operations Center (GNOC)* in Sao Paulo, Brazil. NII Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: NIHD) which operates under the NEXTEL brand in Latin America, is the first operator to use the GNOC to centralize its network operations. Nokia Siemens Networks currently manages operations for NII’s multi-vendor networks across five countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru. The GNOC will allow Nokia Siemens Networks to consolidate network operation activities across the five countries, providing economies of scale and improving network efficiency.

Other operators in the region are expected to be able to benefit from the GNOC and its remote service delivery model. The center has the potential to serve as a “near shore” location for operators in the Americas time zone. The 16,000 square feet facility will initially have150 expert technicians with the capacity to host up to 300.

“This new facility now joins our group of GNOC’s globally, providing increased efficiency in network operations for operators in Latin America and worldwide,” said Armando Almeida, head of Global Services at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Latin America and Brazil in particular are growth markets. NII is our GNOC’s first customer in the region, and we will leverage its scale, automated tools and processes to drive speed, quality and efficiency in the operator’s network.”

“Sao Paulo was chosen for this facility as it is ideally situated in a region with several potential customers that have a strong presence in the Brazilian market. The Brazil market accounts for about 40 percent of the Latin American telecommunications market. In addition, the large pool of experienced, skilled and multilingual technicians available in the region makes the city a desirable and strategic choice,” added Almeida.

In 2010, NII signed a managed services agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks, which was the first of its kind in Latin America. It is one of Nokia Siemens Networks’ largest, multi-vendor, multi-country managed services agreements in the region. As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will centralize and consolidate NII’s network operations from across five countries through its new GNOC in Brazil during the third quarter of 2011.

“As the first beneficiary of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Latin American GNOC, NII will be able to increase operational flexibility, improve cost efficiencies and service quality for our high value customers in Latin America,” said Alan Strauss, NII Holdings’ executive vice president and chief technology officer. “The continuation of this partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks will not only allow us to continue serving our customers in Latin America, but strengthen our focus of delivering differentiated wireless services in the region.”

In addition to supporting NII’s iDEN® and 3G technologies, the facility will support, transport, IP network and data/Value Added Services (VAS), all from multiple vendors. The migration and centralization of network operations across all five countries will be completed in Q3 2011.

This new GNOC joins an existing network of three other multi-technology, multi-vendor GNOCs – two in India and one in Portugal. These centers are designed to help customers go to the market faster through round-the-clock project management. The centers ensure high network and service performance through transparent Service Level Agreements and improved service delivery efficiency while reducing risks.

By centralizing and consolidating resources at the three GNOCs, Nokia Siemens Networks delivers economies of scale to its customers and drives network efficiency. The centers have remote delivery model, and apply standardized and automated IT tools and processes. Today, the network of GNOCs remotely supports 200 million global subscribers, handling close to 100 million alarms, resolving 200,000 trouble tickets and generating 127,000 performance reports per month.

“We have set up these centers in such a way that they are all interconnected, so resources can be optimized and allocated intelligently,” said Arto Vilkman, head of services at Nokia Siemens Networks Latin America. “Unlocking more value for our customers from their network chains, and helping them provide the best services to their end users is our ultimate goal.”

New Swordfish beta introduces Speed Dial extensions, adds password synchronization
Oslo, Norway — May 31, 2011

Today, Opera Swordfish, or the Opera 11.50 beta browser if you want to be specific, becomes available for immediate testing.

The new beta of Opera’s desktop browser transforms the popular Speed Dial feature by adding extensions to the mix. Speed Dial extensions transform your Speed Dial from a simple thumbnail bookmark into a dynamic source of updated content, available in every new tab. What does that mean? Instead of a static link to a weather website, a Speed Dial extension can display the forecast for your specific location. In fact, we built this exact extension.

Speed Dial extensions are easy to make. All you need are some basic web development skills. Documentation is available at Dev Opera.

To learn more about Speed Dial Extensions, watch the Developers guide to Speed Dial extensions.

But we didn't stop there. Swordfish lets you synchronize your passwords — securely — through Opera Link, so you can log on to Facebook, your webmail and other sites, from anywhere. Opera Link also synchronizes bookmarks, your Speed Dial, custom search engine preferences, notes (yes, you can take notes in the Opera browser), typed browser history and more.

“We don’t make releases for the sake of releases, nor do we make innovations for the sake of innovation,” said Jan Standal, VP of desktop products, Opera. “We create browsers that make the Web faster and easier to use, and the newest features in Swordfish support that goal.”

Opera continues to accelerate its innovation cycle. To introduce more people to Opera’s newest technology, Swordfish beta is available through Opera Next, a version of Opera that updates to the newest test versions of the browser. With Opera Next you’ll be given a separate installation of the browser, ensuring that the version you already use on your computer remains untouched; they both coexist peacefully and independently. Download Opera Next just once, and we’ll automatically update you when a new test version is available.

Availability

Download Swordfish beta from http://www.opera.com/browser/next/. If you downloaded the alpha, Opera Next will automatically update you to the beta.

Nokia lowers Devices & Services second quarter 2011 outlook and updates full year 2011 outlook

Published May 31, 2011
Nokia Corporation
Stock exchange release
May 31, 2011 at 15:00 (CET +1)
Espoo, Finland - Nokia today commented on factors impacting its business and updated its second quarter and full year 2011 outlook for Devices & Services. During the second quarter 2011, multiple factors are negatively impacting Nokia's Devices & Services business to a greater extent than previously expected. These factors include:
- the competitive dynamics and market trends across multiple price categories, particularly in China and Europe;
- a product mix shift towards devices with lower average selling prices and lower gross margins; and
- pricing tactics by Nokia and certain competitors.
Updated outlook for Devices & Services for the second quarter 2011:
- Nokia now expects Devices & Services net sales to be substantially below its previously expected range of EUR 6.1 billion to EUR 6.6 billion for the second quarter 2011. This update is primarily due to lower than previously expected average selling prices and mobile device volumes.
- Nokia now expects Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin to be substantially below its previously expected range of 6% to 9% for the second quarter 2011. This update is primarily due to lower than previously expected net sales. While visibility is very limited, Nokia's current view is that second quarter 2011 Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin could be around breakeven.
Updated outlook for Devices & Services for the full year 2011:
- Given the unexpected change in our outlook for the second quarter, Nokia believes it is no longer appropriate to provide annual targets for 2011. However, Nokia expects to continue to provide short-term quarterly forecasts in its interim reports as well as annual targets when circumstances allow it to do so.
- Nokia's previous targets for the third quarter, fourth quarter, and full year 2011 were: 1) Net sales in Devices & Services to be at approximately the same level in the third quarter 2011 as in the second quarter 2011, and seasonally higher in the fourth quarter 2011, compared to the third quarter 2011; 2) Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin to be between 6% and 9% in 2011. These targets are no longer valid.
Nokia is taking immediate action to address the issues that are impacting its Devices & Services business. Nokia's high-level strategic objectives and targets remain unchanged.
- Nokia is continuing to invest to bring new innovative capabilities to its Symbian line up. In addition, Nokia has taken price actions on its current smartphone portfolio, and Nokia is intensifying its focus on retail point-of-sales marketing.
- Nokia started shipping its new dual-SIM devices last week.
- Nokia remains pleased with its progress on its Windows Phone strategy, and has increased confidence that the first Nokia product with Windows Phone will ship in the fourth quarter 2011.
- Nokia remains committed to its target to reduce its Devices & Services non-IFRS operating expenses by EUR 1 billion for the full year 2013, compared to the full year 2010, and plans to implement these reductions as quickly and effectively as possible.
- After the transition, Nokia continues to target Devices & Services net sales to grow faster than the market and Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin to be 10% or more.
"Strategy transitions are difficult. We recognize the need to deliver great mobile products, and therefore we must accelerate the pace of our transition," said Stephen Elop, president and CEO of Nokia. "Our teams are aligned, and we have increased confidence that we will ship our first Nokia product with Windows Phone in the fourth quarter 2011."
Nokia will provide its second quarter results and more details when it reports its Q2 2011 results on July 21, 2011.
Nokia will be hosting a conference call at 13:30 UK time (8:30 EST). The dial-in number for media (listen only - the question and answer session will be limited to financial analysts and investors only) is +1 706 634 5012 . Conference ID: 72156605.
The dial-in number for financial analysts and investors is US: +1 888 636 1561 . Conference ID: 72156605. UK: +44 1452 560 299 . Conference ID: 72175614.
A replay of the call will be available soon after the call completion. The replay number is US: +1 800 642 1687 . Conference ID: 72156605. UK: +44 1452 55 0000 . Conference ID: 72175614.

Galaxy S 2 vs. iPhone, Thunderbolt, Focus (Web Browsing)

How does the Samsung Galaxy S 2 compare in terms of web browser speed against the iPhone 4, HTC Thunderbolt, and Samsung Focus? It smokes them all! Not only do pages load faster, but screen rotations are quicker, pinch-to-zoom is smoother, and scrolling is buttery smooth. That is thanks in part to the 1.2GHz Exynos CPU and 1GB of RAM.

Samsung Galaxy S2 vs HTC Sensation - Browser Performance

Here is my video on the Samsung Galaxy S2 vs HTC Sensation - Browser Performance to see witch one is the King of Android.

Samsung Galaxy S2 [CF-Root v3.5] KE2/7 - su+bb+CWM3

This rooted kernel is for the "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root takes the kernel from an original Samsung firmware, and just adds root, busybox, and ClockWorkMod (CWM3) recovery

THIS IS NOT A ROM - it is only a modified kernel. You need to have the relevant firmware already on your device. You do NOT need to wipe anything for this patch. You DO need to read the instructions. PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST!

CF-Root for SGS2 is still very much BETA. There WILL be issues !

Donate
There have now been over 300.000 downloads of CF-Root for various devices (see for example Galaxy S1, and Galaxy Tab 7"), and many more if you include ROMs, kernels, etc that use it. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!)

Features
- The kernel is fully stock and taken from the original firmware, with just the following added:
- Root
- Superuser 2.3.6.1
- Busybox v1.16.2androidminimal (from CWM)
- Integrated CWM 3.0.0.5

Instructions - ODIN (short)
- Flash CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar (from the attached zip) as PDA in ODIN, without repartition. Done.

Instructions - ODIN (long)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)

Instructions - If you already have CF-Root
- Copy the zip file to your SD card
- Stop sharing SD card with computer over USB, unplug the cable, etc
- Applications -> CWM -> Flash kernel. Select the ZIP file on your SD card.
- Done

Other kernels
Replacing CF-Root with other kernels and vice-versa sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't have a list.

When going from CF-Root to another kernel, root will usually stay, while CWM will be lost (unless the other kernel also includes it), but there should not be issues. The CWM Manager app may remain, but probably won't do anything useful.

ClockworkMod
CF-Root includes a custom version of CWM3.

CF-Root/CWM3 is NOT compatible with ROM Manager! Manage/perform your backup/restores from CWM directly or using the CWM Manager application included with CF-Root

- Booting into recovery will immediately give you CWM. The standard recovery will only be started if a Samsung package is detected.
- ADB is functional in recovery, however it may take up to a minute for it to start up after booting into recovery.
- When connected to ADB in recovery, you need to use "rootsh" command to get root, instead of "su". This will not prompt you, it will just give you root. Obviously the "rootsh" command does not work when booted normally.

NOTICE: CWM does not currently backup or restore kernels

CWM Manager
Because of incompatibility with ROM Manager, I wrote and included "CWM Manager". This is a new app (as of March 30, 2011). You can find it under Applications -> CWM. It is much faster to use than manually booting into CWM and selecting these options.

Features:
- Boot to CWM
- Backup firmware
- Restore backups
- Delete backups
- Install APKs
- Flash CWM3 update.zip's
- Flash kernels (zImage, zImage in TAR, zImage in ZIP, zImage in TAR in ZIP) - without changing warning triangle status or increasing flash counter

Note: If you flash a different kernel, CWM Manager may remain installed. However, functions may not work, because they need kernel compatibility ! At this version of CWM Manager this does not produce errors, it just doesn't do what you expect it to

Custom boot / init scripts
CF-Root will execute the following scripts if present, in the order listed:

- /system/etc/init.d/* (there can be many files here, no extensions! use #!)
- /system/bin/customboot.sh (busybox sh)
- /system/xbin/customboot.sh (busybox sh)
- /data/local/customboot.sh (busybox sh)

Please make sure you chown / chmod the scripts correctly so they can be executed. Pretty much root:root / 755.

Custom boot animations and binaries
CF-Root also supports custom boot animations:

- /system/media/bootanimation.zip
- /data/local/bootanimation.zip

And custom boot binaries:

- /data/local/bootanimation.bin

Installing busybox over the included version
It is possible to install a custom busybox over CF-Root v3.0 and newer. However, this is not without risk. CF-Root makes heavy use of scripting, and many CF-Root scripts rely on the internal busybox version. If you do install a seperate busybox version (always use "stericson" installer!), install it to /system/xbin. Installing it to /system/bin will mess things up for sure. Even if you do that part right, it may still break CF-Root, so make sure to make a backup before trying.

Next Google Nexus will be made HTC or LG

The network has an image next smartphone from Google. Following the models Nexus One and Nexus S appears apparatus which, judging by the frame will have a significant difference from them. The external appearance of the device is most similar to the devices from the company HTC, but it has no traditional Android-smartphone menu buttons / home / skip / search. This may mean that an unknown until the apparatus is designed to be running Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which does not require the presence of hardware or touchpads. More than anything specific to say about the model on a photo can not be - a typical smartphone with a large screen, occupying almost the entire front portion.

The information, which, citing an unnamed source shared by the representatives of the resource TechHog.com, mentioned that the model does not have the keys and running the most current at the time of the release of OS Android. The device will support HSDPA + standard network and CDMA, and in the U.S. very likely will be presented to the operator Sprint. In addition, he will receive a front camera and will be released in December 2011. Title not yet known, but it is likely that he will not get the name of Nexus 3, even though it would be quite logical. Manufacturer of the device as yet unknown, but the only two options - LG and HTC. It is well known and positioning - a smartphone is not for everyone. The basic idea - a demonstration of the platform for developers. To this end, the smartphone will have the latest version of the software, but not necessarily the most "powerful hardware.

Samsung Galaxy S II hits 1m units in Korea, breaks records

Galaxy S II pips iPhone to 1m in 1 month for Korea

Samsung started off the week with word that the Galaxy S II had set a record for the fastest-selling smartphone in Korea. The dual-core Android machine hit one million sales in just its first month, or about one every three seconds. As a frame of reference, the Galaxy S took 70 days to reach the same tally, Samsung said.
The phone shipped in late April to Samsung's home country and cracked the 100,000 mark in three days, doubled it in eight, and had passed the half-million mark in two weeks. Samsung credited the rush purely to hardware, pointing to the much improved 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen. The 21Mbps 3G, very thin (8.9mm) design and the newer TouchWiz interface were also factors.

Such a quick sales rate reflects an intensifying battle for the smartphone lead in Korea. Apple managed 300,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders in the country and may have come close to trumping Samsung's numbers, but it has still faced limitations in the past that Samsung didn't face in May, such as limited carrier availability. Until SK Telecom was added in March, Apple had to sell through just KT. The virtual duopoly of Samsung and LG in Korea has also led to KT and others supporting foreign devices facing corporate retaliation; Samsung 'punished' KT for its iPhone deal by holding back on marketing support for the Omnia line.

Overall Galaxy S II sales are likely to be larger overall given the phone's presence in Europe and other key parts of the world. Samsung is expected to repeat its all-fronts strategy in the US by launching the Galaxy S II on most major American carriers in slight variants.
