Samsung GALAXY S II reaches new heights with 5 million global sales

Global operator and distributor support ensures growing momentum for Samsung’s flagship smartphone

SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, announced that the Samsung GALAXY S II (Model: GT-I9100) has passed the 5 million global sales milestone.

The next generation smartphone also includes exclusive access to Samsung’s four new content and entertainment hubs, seamlessly integrated to provide instant access to music, games, e-reading and social networking services.

The 5 million mark has been reached in just 85 days, a rate which is 40 days faster than the original GALAXY S took to reach the same sales mark. This rate is set to accelerate as Samsung has just launched GALAXY S II in China, the world’s largest market.

Users can take high-quality pictures and film HD video before playing back the images on the device’s large 4.19” Super Clear LCD touch screen. The Samsung GALAXY R is powered by a fast Dual Core processor, enabling seamless multitasking, faster webpage loading and an ultrafast power up. The high-power processor also delivers smooth HD 720p video capture and Full HD 1080p playback(Divx, WMV, MP4, H.264 B/P) at 30fps(frames per second). Lightning-fast downloads are enabled by an HSPA+ connection, meaning movies, games and music can be downloaded quicker while on the move.

The device’s overall connectivity is enhanced with the inclusion of Bluetooth 3.0 HS and USB 2.0 support, allowing the device to connect to another USB device without using a PC. Dual Channel Wi-Fi is also included as standard, enabling smoother and faster connection speeds, while the inclusion of Kies 2.0 and Kies Air provides better wireless device management.

This performance combined with the device’s compact form factor and long-life battery means that the Samsung GALAXY R is the ideal device for technology enthusiasts who want a stylish, premium, high performing device while on the move.

Intuitive User Experience

In addition to using the intuitive Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform, Samsung has also included Samsung Hubs with the GALAXY R, enriching the overall user-experience. The Hubs offer content anytime, anywhere and ensure that you’re always in touch with your social world. The Hubs included are:

A Social Hub which aggregates the user’s contacts, calendar and email along with instant messaging and social networking connections all within one easy-to-use interface, keeping you in control of your social life, wherever you are.

Samsung has further improved the device’s usability by including a range of other features such as the Samsung Voice Command, an easy-to-use voice recognition service enabling simple hands-free control of the phone. The voice recognition feature also enables the user to have their text messages read out loud and to reply to them vocally to them orally, while calls, e-books and other features can all be launched with a simple speech command. Samsung has also included L!ve Panel, enabling a fully customizable home screen experience and enhancing visuals with 3D effects.

Samsung’s “Find My Mobile” functionality enables users to track, ring, remotely lock the device or bring up call logs when their smartphone has been misplaced, lost or stolen. SAMSUNG ANNOUNCES WHITE GALAXY S II TO HIT UK SHORES

Samsung’s most powerful Smartphone yet now available in white from the 1st September

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., announces that following the success of the original Galaxy S II released in May this year, the popular handset will now also be available in white in the UK from the 1st September 2011. The sleek and stylish Galaxy S II is the first handset to offer Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus screen technology, the largest, brightest and most colourful screen available in Samsung’s portfolio of devices.

Super slim (8.49mm) and lightweight (116g) Samsung’s Galaxy S II runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and is super-fast thanks to its dual-core 1.2GHz processor. The device’s exceptionally bright screen makes it perfect for watching movies and TV or playing games and looking at apps, with its ground-breaking ‘organic’ LED technology, Super AMOLED Plus also saving energy so you can enjoy watching content without affecting the battery life.

The Galaxy S II is built for multi-tasking, its dual-core processor makes switching between applications and loading web pages such as Google, Yahoo and YouTube quick, whilst superior 3D hardware means games and videos can be loaded and played with ease. What’s more, there’s immediate access to content and services such as catch up TV and movie downloads, thanks to super-fast connectivity and WiFi, with speeds up to 21Mbps which provides increased download speeds, and Bluetooth 3.0+HS which reduces data transfer times significantly.

Simon Stanford, Managing Director, Mobile, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “Sales of the Galaxy S II have surpassed all expectations since its release in May this year. The arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S II white brings to market an incredibly stylish addition to our latest multi-award winning handset. The Galaxy S II is our slimmest, lightest, fastest and now whitest smartphone, the first device to offer Super AMOLED Plus screen technology, alongside the most advanced technical specifications including the latest Android OS and a dual core processor.”

The Galaxy S II also features an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD recording and playback, Samsung’s patented AllShare technology so you can share pictures, movies, and music with other devices and Samsung’s new Kies Air which lets people manage their smartphone contents from their PC via local WiFi connections.

A new ‘Live Panel’ feature on the Galaxy S II allows aggregation of live web, social networking and application contents to a single customisable home-screen, whilst it’s possible to place all the important parts of your life onto three adjacent home screens which you can switch between simply by pressing and holding on the screen. As with all the Samsung Galaxy family, the Galaxy S II features Samsung Hubs, providing a huge range of entertainment content, advanced mobile games and the ability to manage social networking accounts.

The Samsung Galaxy S II white will be available in the UK across all major networks and retailers from 1st September 2011.

BlackBerry 9900 official launch event

Next week, on Wednesday, August 3rd, RIM are having a press event in Central London where one can only presume we will get the official BlackBerry Bold 9900 launch details. Various dates for launch have been bouncing around the internet for some time although none of the UK carriers have committed to a specific date yet. Many online retailers that sell sim free handsets say August 15th but until we hear it from RIM direct I wont hold my breath.

We could however see some other devices at the event, although I am not putting my money on this. We know RIM will have several new models in the market this year but when and where remains a mystery.

As soon as we have the Bold 9900's launch date will will of course let you know.

Samsung Electronics Announces Second Quarter 2011 Results

- Consolidated operating profit reaches 3.75 trillion won on revenues of 39.44 trillion won

SEOUL, Korea – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced revenues of 39.44 trillion Korean won on a consolidated basis for the second quarter ended June 30, 2011, a 4-percent increase year-on-year. For the quarter, the company posted consolidated net income of 3.51 trillion won, representing an 18-percent decrease year-on-year. Consolidated operating profit for the quarter was 3.75 trillion won.

In its earnings guidance disclosed on July 7, Samsung estimated second-quarter consolidated revenues would reach approximately 39 trillion won with an operating profit of 3.7 trillion won.

By business segment, Telecommunications drove revenue growth in the second quarter, with sales rising 43 percent year-on-year due to strong demand for Samsung’s GALAXY SII smartphone and other mobile devices. Digital Media & Appliances saw sales increase from the previous quarter supported by improved demand for flat panel TVs.

Operating profit declined year-on-year from the record-setting second quarter of 2010, as weakened demand reduced margins in the Semiconductor and Display Panel businesses. The bottom line was supported by an operating profit of 1.67 trillion won from the Telecommunications businesses.

“Despite the challenging business environment and global economic uncertainties, we achieved continued year-on-year revenue growth in the second quarter driven by mobile device sales, particularly the success of our smartphones,” said Robert Yi, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Investor Relations Team. “Heading into the third quarter – which typically sees increased consumer demand for electronics – we expect competition to remain tight, and will continue to enhance our cost competitiveness and technology leadership in the components businesses.”

Capital expenditure for the second quarter was 5.6 trillion won, bringing the total investment for the first six months of 2011 to 11.2 trillion won. Samsung said the annual projected capex of 23 trillion won remained unchanged, however a shift in allocation to increase semiconductor and reduce LCD investment was possible.

Weak Memory Demand Sees Profit Decline

Samsung’s Semiconductor businesses recorded a consolidated operating profit of 1.79 trillion won in the second quarter, improving from the 1.64 billion achieved in the first quarter but declining from the 2.94 billion won registered the previous year. Revenue reached 9.16 trillion won, a 4-percent decrease year-on-year. The operating profit margin was 19.6 percent.

The Memory Business posted 5.89 trillion won in revenue for the quarter, a 12-percent dip from the same period a year earlier. Demand for commodity DRAM remained weak as global PC shipments saw low-single digit growth, however higher growth was seen in server-related memory sales for data centers and for high-density mobile memory products for smartphones and tablet manufacturers. In response to continued oversupply in the market, Samsung strengthened its cost competitiveness through further migration to 30-nm-class DRAM production and reinforced its focus on high-value added products. For NAND, demand was also driven by orders for mobile device applications while spot prices decreased on weak seasonality.

Sales for the System LSI Business increased as demand for mobile application processors and high-quality image sensors rose. Samsung also announced its foundry business is now ready to start 28nm process manufacturing as it continues to strengthen investment in research and development.

In the third quarter, increased seasonal PC shipments are expected bolster demand in the key DRAM segment, although concerns remain over high inventory levels among PC manufacturers. NAND supply is forecast to be tight due to strong seasonal demand driven by smartphone and tablet sales.

LCD Panel Prices Fall

The Display Panel Business recorded an operating loss of 210 billion won on revenue of 7.09 trillion won, down 9-percent in sales compared with the same period last year.

Overall market shipments of LCD panels increased 8 percent quarter-on-quarter in expectation of the upcoming peak season and Chinese National Day, but panel inventory levels remained high due to slow set sales. Samsung’s total panel shipments increased in the mid 10-percent range compared with the first quarter.

While the average sales price for light-emitting diode (LED) panels for notebook PCs and monitors climbed moderately, prices dropped for TV panels over 40-inches in diameter.

With the peak season approaching, total industry panel shipments for the third quarter are expected to increase 6 percent quarter-on-quarter to 184 million units although global economic uncertainties will continue to weigh on consumer demand. Samsung aims to expand sales of premium panels for 3D and Smart TVs, while further enhancing the efficiency of its productions lines and supply chain.

Smartphone Sales Boost Telecom Profit

The Telecommunications businesses – including mobile communications and telecommunication systems – posted an operating profit of 1.67 trillion won on revenue of 12.18 trillion won. The businesses achieved an operating profit margin of 13.7 percent for the quarter.

Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business saw revenues rise 45 percent year-on-year to 11.69 trillion won. Shipments of mobile handsets increased in the high-single-digit range quarter-on-quarter driven by brisk sales of smartphones including the flagship GALAXY SII, which began to be rolled out globally during the quarter. The average sales price of handsets increased by more than 10 percent.

Samsung expected market demand for mobile handsets to increase by more than 15 percent in the second half, driven by consumers upgrading to smartphones. In the third quarter, Samsung will continue to drive sales of the GALAXY SII and strengthen its product lineup with new mobiles featuring Long-Term Evolution technology. The company will also proactively respond to increased demand for tablet devices with its GALAXY Tab portfolio in various sizes. The Mobile Communications Business is on track to achieve its 2011 goals of outperforming market growth and maintaining a double digit operating margin.

For the Telecommunications Systems Business, revenue and operating profit improved year-on-year supported by increased investment from mobile carriers in LTE network infrastructure.

Digital Media & Appliances Defies Market Conditions

The Digital Media & Appliances businesses – including Visual Display, IT Solutions and Digital Appliances – posted revenues of 14.07 trillion won for second quarter. The operating profit of 510 billion won represented an improvement on the 100 billion won registered the same period last year.

Samsung’s flat panel TV shipments and profitability both increased for the quarter, as sales of LED TVs continued to pick up in developed and emerging markets. LED TV sales accounted for roughly half of all Samsung LCD TVs sold for the quarter, reflecting the wide acceptance of the new technology.

Overall, flat panel TV market demand in the third quarter is projected to increase in the mid 10-percent range quarter-on-quarter supported by strong seasonality. Samsung aims to expand sales of Smart TVs by providing region-specific TV applications and content for viewers.

As for Digital Appliances, revenues grew strongly on sales of premium products such as air conditioners and refrigerators in both Korea and emerging markets, especially Latin America.

In U.S. Smartphone Market, Android is Top Operating System, Apple is Top Manufacturer

According to June data from Nielsen, Google’s Android operating system (OS) now claims the largest share of the U.S. consumer smartphone market with 39 percent. Apple’s iOS is in second place with 28 percent, while RIM Blackberry is down to 20 percent.

However, because Apple is the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS operating system, it is clearly the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States. Other leading manufacturers include HTC, whose Android phones represents 14 percent of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices account for 6 percent of the market; and Motorola, whose Android devices are owned by 11 percent of smartphone consumers. Samsung’s Android devices are used by 8 percent of smartphone owners while their Windows Mobile/WP7 phones are used by 2 percent of smartphone owners.

Apple Passes Nokia and Holds Off Samsung to Become World's Top Smartphone Vendor [Updated]

Just hours after research firm IDC released data showing Apple dramatically outpacing the overall mobile phone industry in year-over-year growth for the second quarter of 2011, Strategy Analytics has confirmed that Apple has indeed become the world's largest smartphone manufacturer. In that smaller but faster-growing submarket, Apple dethroned long-time leader Nokia and just barely held off a fast-rising Samsung to take the top spot.
Alex Spektor, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments grew a healthy 76 percent annually to reach a record 110 million units in Q2 2011. We had previously reported on Apple becoming the largest smartphone vendor in terms of revenue and profits. Now, just four years after the release of the original iPhone, Apple has become the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume with 18 percent market share. Apple’s growth remained strong as it expanded distribution worldwide, particularly in China and Asia.”
With both Apple and Nokia reporting their quarterly financial results last week, it was confirmed that Apple had passed Nokia, but some analysts had suggested that Samsung might surge past both companies on the strength of its Android-based handset sales. While Samsung did indeed achieve remarkable 520% year-over-year smartphone growth to move from 5.0% of the market to 17.5%, Apple's performance was strong enough to at least temporarily take the crown with 18.5% of the market.

Update: ABI Research has just released similar data showing Apple on top of the smartphone market with Samsung in a close second.
ABI Research Senior Analyst Michael Morgan comments: “Although Apple’s 142% YoY growth placed it as number one this quarter, Samsung’s 500% YoY growth shows that going forward, the top smartphone OEM position is Samsung’s to lose.”
ABI Research estimates that 47 million Android phones were sold during the quarter, giving the platform 46.4% of the smartphone market, more than double that of the iPhone.

The specifications of the upgrade can be found in the post that Rikard posted back in June. With regards to the roll-out plan, as stated earlier, this upgrade will first and foremost be made available to generic trade kits. You will get a notification in your phone (if your kit is subject to the update) when the software upgrade is available. The software ugrade can only be installed using a computer and PC Companion software.

Softbank Mobile and Ericsson demonstrate new LTE feature to improve cell-edge data rate

Ericsson supports SOFTBANK MOBILE in conducting the first field demonstration of LTE cooperative transmission control / coordinated scheduling
The function can improve cell-edge user throughout by a factor of three
Network was located in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, Japan – a combination of urban, suburban and rural radio environments
SOFTBANK MOBILE and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) have successfully demonstrated the benefits of a new feature, cooperative transmission control/coordinated scheduling in LTE radio base stations*, which significantly improves cell-edge user performance.

The test, conducted using commercially available LTE terminals, clearly demonstrated the strong potential of coordinated radio resource management functionality in LTE networks.

Coordinated scheduling avoids the severe interference that can otherwise be encountered at the cell edge between base stations that operate on the same frequency. By coordinating the base stations’ use of radio resources, it is possible to improve cell-edge user throughput by a factor of two or three, while simultaneously improving overall cell throughput.

Ericsson provided an industry-leading end-to-end LTE solution for the test, consisting of its latest multi-standard base station, the RBS 6000; its commercially proven Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network; operations support systems software; and professional services.

* SOFTBANK MOBILE developed this function as ECO-LTE – Enhanced COoperative transmission control on LTE.

Alibaba Group, Yahoo!, and SoftBank Reach Agreement on Alipay

Alibaba Group will Participate in the Ongoing Value of Alipay

Alibaba Group, Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO), and SoftBank (TYO:JP:9984) announced they have reached an agreement in which Alibaba Group will continue to participate in Alipay's future financial performance, including a future IPO or other liquidity event. The agreement is consistent with the two agreed-upon principles established at the outset of the negotiations: structure the inter-company relationship between Alipay and Taobao in order to preserve the value within Taobao and, by extension, within Alibaba Group; and provide that Alibaba Group is appropriately compensated for the value of Alipay.

Key Terms of the Agreement:

The agreement establishes the following:

The agreement preserves the existing relationship between Taobao and Alipay. Alipay will continue to provide payment processing services to Alibaba Group and its subsidiaries (including Taobao) on preferential terms.
Alibaba Group will license to Alipay certain intellectual property and technology and provide certain software technology services to Alipay and its subsidiaries. Alipay will pay to Alibaba Group, prior to a liquidity event, a royalty and software technology services fee, which consists of an expense reimbursement and a 49.9% share of the consolidated pre-tax income of Alipay and its subsidiaries.
Alibaba Group will receive no less than $2 billion and no more than $6 billion in proceeds from an IPO of Alipay or other liquidity event. The exact proceeds to Alibaba Group will be determined by multiplying the total equity value of Alipay by 37.5%, subject to the foregoing floor and ceiling amounts.
"Over the last few months, we have worked cooperatively with our partners at Yahoo! and SoftBank to reach an agreement that serves the interests of all parties," said Jack Ma, Alibaba Group Chairman and CEO. "This agreement is good for Alibaba Group and its stakeholders, including customers, employees and shareholders. Most importantly, Alipay was able to secure the license it needed to continue operating."

"This is a good outcome for Yahoo! and for our shareholders, as well as all the parties to this agreement," said Carol Bartz, Yahoo! CEO. "As a result of this constructive process, we have an agreement that preserves the value of Taobao, provides for profit sharing at Alipay, and creates a structure to allow Alibaba Group to participate if Alipay's value is realized in an IPO or other liquidity event. Alibaba Group and its management team have an impressive track record of value creation and we look forward to participating in Alibaba Group's—and Alipay's—continued success."

"This agreement was in part made possible by the strong long-term relationship and trust that exists between the principals at Alibaba Group, SoftBank and Yahoo!, and also lays the foundation for Alibaba Group to continue its impressive growth under the dynamic leadership of Jack Ma," said Masayoshi Son, SoftBank CEO. "Alibaba Group is a clear leader in the China Internet business, the largest and fastest growing market in the world, and the close relationship with Alipay will allow Alibaba Group to strengthen that leadership position in the years to come."

Alipay provides payment processing services to Alibaba Group and some affiliates, including Taobao, and to third parties. Taobao is China's largest online retail website. Alibaba Group's principal shareholders include Yahoo!, SoftBank, and Jack Ma and Joseph Tsai. In May 2011, Alipay obtained a license to operate in China from the People's Bank of China following the restructuring of Alipay. The license will enable Alipay to continue serving Taobao and its other customers in China.

Regulatory Approvals

The agreement is expected to close by the end of 2011 and is subject to certain regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

Alibaba Group, Yahoo! and SoftBank will discuss this agreement on a conference call at 8:45 a.m. ET/5:45 a.m. PT today. MTS and Cisco solution for deploying a scalable Internet access

The mobile operator and Cisco announced the first in Russia to implement the solution that provides simultaneous access to the Internet to millions of subscribers of MTS in resource-limited IP-addresses.

As stated in the companies, the development of 3G networks and increasing consumption of data services has led to a significant increase in the number of new devices connected to the Internet, and an exponential increase in the number of simultaneous subscriber sessions. When connected to a worldwide network, each user receives from the operator's IP-address - a unique network address of the device in the network are needed to identify the user on the network. In the case of mobile Internet use dynamic or temporary IP-address, that is, every time you connect to the subscriber is allocated a new temporary address. In the absence of free addresses of your Internet connection is impossible.

Now in Russia used the IP-address IPv4, where each IP-address is a combination of four numbers, for example: 192.168.0.1. The number of addresses in such a system is limited: worldwide there are 4.3 billion addresses in the protocol IPv4. For 30 years the global system of Internet addresses available to exhaust stock-based protocol IPv4, and in the near future transition to addressing the next generation - the protocol IPv6, which will significantly expand the range of addresses available by increasing the length of the address.

System Address Translation Cisco Carrier Grade Network Address Translation (NAT), introduced by the MTS provides the ability to connect new users to the Internet with a limited number of public IP-addresses for the simultaneous use of the same address more than one person. The system's ability to increase its capacity to 80 million targeted broadcasts provide an opportunity to centralize MTS Internet access to several regional networks, both mobile and fixed networks. At the first stage, the system Cisco Carrier Grade Network Address Translation (NAT) is set in Siberia. In the future implementation of the solution will be other regions of the country.

Capacity Cisco CRS-3 reaches 322 Tbit / s, which is three times higher than the previous system provider routing. This allows for a second with a small load all the printed information to the Library of Congress, to provide simultaneous video for the entire population of China and less than four minutes to transmit over the internet all the films, created in the history of mankind.

In addition the player has a module GPS, allowing, if not to navigate, the route of the track by measuring the distance traveled by the owner. He is also a "smart music player", which took a middle ground between the Apple Power Songs and Genius. There is no doubt just the fact that the device is aimed at individuals who like to engage in vigorous activity or are concerned about their physical condition. The player can sync with your computer to download data. Similarly, it can interact with devices based on OS Android. One could also mention the presence of accessory ANT + provides the ability to control heart rate, and also to show calories. This will allow the owner to more accurately assess the results of studies. No official information as to whether this device is presented to the market, have been reported yet. The player is under development and not yet determined its name. One of the most probable options that he teach the name of Motorola MotoActive.

[Unconfirmed] New Details Leak Out About The HTC Vigor, Thanks To NenaMark

We finally have a bit more info about the mysterious HTC Vigor - a device that we previously only knew about thanks to a leaked image taken by its 6MP camera. Now, though, this device is coming into the light a bit more, thanks to A NenaMark benchmark ran by an "anonymous" submitter. We now have a better idea of what this handset may be packing under the hood, and it sounds quite pleasing:
1280x720 display (!)
Qualcomm Adreno GPU
1.5GHz processor (it's not clear whether it's dual-core or not, but we're hoping that it is)
Android 2.3.4
It appears to be running on Verizon's network

While this handset may sound pretty great, make a mental note that these types of benchmarks are fairly easy to spoof, so take it all with a grain of salt until we get more proof it its reality.
With that said, if these specs are legit, I'm already pretty excited about this device.

HTC EVO 3D dumped by Vodafone UK, due to “delays”

Some quite sad news has emerged for aspiring owners of HTC’s chunky EVO 3D – UK network Vodafone has decided it won’t be offering the glasses-free 3D Android phone it announced last month after all, due, apparently, to “delays” in the arrival of the phone.

Here’s the statement:

There’s been speculation recently regarding availability of HTC EVO 3D.

We can confirm that due to delays in the launch of the HTC EVO 3D, we no longer intend to include the device in our smartphone range. We’ll be contacting any customers who registered their interest shortly.

We realise this might come as a disappointment, but we’ve got some really exciting handsets in the pipeline. Keep an eye on our coming soon section for all the latest information about the products coming to Vodafone.

We’d imagine the rather lukewarm reception given to LG’s Optimus 3D may also have something to do with it. Cheerio, big fella:

And the EVO 3D is indeed no longer featured on Vodafone’s “coming soon” page. This latest 3D trend hasn’t lasted very long, has it?

Ericsson IPX Presents at MMA Forum New York

A Coca-Cola vending machine with mobile payments enabled by Ericsson IPX caused a stir at this year’s event, illustrating the power of operator billing for purchasing physical goods.

MMA Forum New York took place at the Waldorf Astoria on June 16-17 with Ericsson IPX invited by Coca-Cola to present a mobile payments enabled vending machine. The machine caused quite a buzz in the Mobile Experience Lab with attendees able to ‘buy’ a beverage with the cost of their purchase charged to their mobile phone bill and payments facilitated by IPX. The vending machine showed how mobile payments and carrier billing can be a useful tool for not just digital content, but real world physical goods and services as well. Attendees of the MMA Forum London event in October will have the opportunity to test a similar machine.

Ericsson IPX Wins Meffys Award

Alongside partner Velti, IPX was named a winner at this year’s Meffys Awards for its work on A&N Media’s Mobile Customer Relationship Management (CRM).

We are delighted to announce that Ericsson IPX, working with mobile marketing specialist Velti, has been named the winner of the ‘Best Brand on Mobile’ award at this year’s Meffys Awards. In what proved to be a very competitive category, the companies were honoured for our work on the A&N Media Mobile CRM.

A&N Media, a leading multi-channel media company encompassing some of the UK’s most popular brands, is working with Ericsson IPX and Velti to offer a range of opt-in advertising programmes and Premium-SMS services to the readers of its various publications. The aim is to encourage customer engagement via SMS through a variety of areas such as texting in to get hints for puzzles, to submit an answer for a competition or to provide feedback. Ericsson IPX manages operator billing payment services and traffic, whilst Velti handles the collection of information including location, gender and interests derived from each customer interaction. This information is then used for targeted third party advertising – for instance, a discount on taxi services in Hull for Hull Daily Mail readers – as well as internal CRM.

Kelaine Olvera, Director of Marketing at Velti commented: “We are extremely pleased to have won such a prestigious award in a hard fought category. Having a messaging service with low latency is pivotal to guaranteeing our customers’ campaigns are as engaging as they can be. Without an A2P messaging enabler like Ericsson IPX, providing this service in such a cost-effective manner would not be possible.”

Ericsson IPX Launches Mobile Payments with Social Network Badoo.com

IPX is enabling Badoo subscribers across the UK to make mobile payments for premium features and services

In April we announced that social network Badoo had launched mobile payments, enabled by Ericsson IPX. UK-based users of Badoo’s social network, which has over 120 million users worldwide, are now able to purchase premium features and services using their mobile phones. Badoo operates a freemium based business model, which allows users to register, create a profile and upload images at no cost. Premium services such as ‘Super Powers’ and ‘Rise Up’ can then be paid for by the user via card, PayPal and SMS.

Thanks to IPX, Badoo’s members can make purchases using just their mobile handset with transactions either charged to their monthly bill, or removed from their prepay balance. By providing consumers with a fast, secure and easy payment method, Badoo expects to convert a greater proportion of its user base in to premium service users. Bart Swanson, COO of Badoo, says: “Providing consumers with a mobile payment method for premium services is vital for the success of any freemium based business, by making purchases simple with SMS, we expect more of our members to be able to use and appreciate premium services.” Badoo has recently started a marketing campaign to raise awareness and increase the number of members using these new services.

As a global e-commerce enabler, Ericsson IPX provides delivery and charging, using direct billing, premium SMS, Web and online mobile payment. For more information on mobile payments and the carrier billing service provided by Ericsson IPX, please contact your Account Manager.

New Refund API Launched by IPX

Latest addition to IPX’s existing suite of APIs will enable service providers to easily manage and initiate refunds on transactions.

Ericsson IPX is delighted to announce the launch of a new refund API which will enable service providers to perform refunds for your end-users and subscribers. With this latest addition to our extensive suite of APIs, service providers in the US and Germany can perform refunds on transactions with all operators where this has been integrated. Availability in other markets in future will depend on demand and operator support.

The functionality of the new refund API can be integrated directly into a service provider’s customer care tool quickly and with minimal fuss, making it easy for customer care reps to start initiating refunds. Furthermore, once integrated, they can decide on and initiate refunds independently without relying on IPX or the operator. As such, service providers will be able to self-service manage and track refunds themselves, allowing them to better serve their customers and manage transactions.

For more information on how you can benefit from the new refund API, please contact your IPX account manager.

This will ensure you get even better access and greater transparency to our customer support team, whenever you need them.

We are also in the process of a transition of US support from a standalone unit to our central support team. This will ensure our US customers receive a high-quality 24/7 service. Cable Bahamas to provide high-quality IP telephony services

Selects Nokia Siemens Networks’ platforms and services to launch voice over cable

Cable Bahamas, the leading cable and broadband service provider in the Bahamas, will soon be the first in the islands to offer high-quality, attractively priced IP telephony service over cable networks. The company has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ voice over cable (VoC) softswitch platform to roll out the services.

“We are seeing an increased demand for converged communications services among our subscribers,” said Tony Butler, chief executive officer and president, Cable Bahamas. “As we move forward to offer these services, it’s important that we can promise reliability and superior quality. As a leading provider of softswitch solutions, Nokia Siemens Networks was a great choice to bolster our network infrastructure in order to provide consistently good voice services.”

“Convergence is a big opportunity for communications service providers, not only because it opens the way for new revenues, but also because of the substantial cost savings it brings through optimization of existing networks,” said Michael Jakob, head of business development for the Caribbean at Nokia Siemens Networks. “We aim to help service providers bring a variety of personalized, high-quality services to end users, regardless of the device or network they are using to access those services.”

Nokia Siemens Networks is providing its market-leading hiQ 8000 softswitch platform, which forms a foundation for high-quality voice services and enables Cable Bahamas to scale its deployment of next generation applications. The platform also allows the operator to locate network nodes in a more optimized way and employ geographic redundancy, ensuring uninterrupted service by deploying softswitches in Nassau and Freeport.

In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its hiQ 4300 business communications platform to support business services such as IP Centrex and web-based subscriber self-care, allowing the integration of voice services into existing office or web applications.

Cable Bahamas is expected to launch its fixed line voice service in August 2011.
