Gresso Grand Monaco. The World of High Speed Technologies.

Gresso is pleased to introduce new Grand Monaco Collection, inspired by Formula 1 racing.

Working on Grand Monaco Collection, Gresso designers and engineers sought the phone to excite as strong emotions as race cars do. The result is a significant and laconic gadget rendering elegance and force of a supercar.

Gresso Grand Monaco phones are the embodiment of the best features of legendary race supercars: modern technologies and innovative design, functional versatility and high-tech materials.

High Tech Materials

Every aspect of the phone reveals the style of Formula 1.

The case is executed of titanium superalloy, specially developped for Gresso. At the closing stage under 750°C, the case is coated with several layers of high-tech ceramic. This coating neither gets tarnished nor changes its colour. Initially this material was used in space industry only.

Another material, borrowed from the world of racing cars, is carbon on the front and back case panels. Formula 1 engineers consider carbon to be the best material ever used for a racing car body. This materail is able to take any shape remaining hard, incredibly firm and light. It is five times as light as steel and twice as light as alluminium, but as strong as they are.

A hand-polished 42 K sapphire crystal enframes the display.

Innovations

The source of pride of Gresso engineers is a flat keyboard made of polished steel. Absolutely flat, it is made out of a single sheet of polished steel 100 micron thick. The keyboard plate under vacuum is covered with ultrastrong titanium Black PVD, which makes the surface mirrorlike black and scratchproof. Laser cut figures and letters. The navigation keys are made of surgical steel with the application of ultra-precision turning technology that ensures the superexcellent precision and impecable shape of each detail. Magnetic Smart Lock for battery cover fastening.

The device holds all functions necessary for a businessman: 2 MP camera, Wap/GPRS/Bluetooth/SMS/MMS/e-mail/EDGE, Java. An outstanding menu design, interpreting the spirit and audacious style of the collection, was exclusively developed for Grand Monaco.

The Premier Series of Grand Monaco Collection – Carbon

Foreign Airlines Ahead of U.S. on Cellphone Use

Cellphone use on airplanes, it would seem, is on extended hold in the United States.

The national union representing flight attendants wants Congress to ban in-flight phone calls, and survey after survey of airline passengers shows strong opposition to allowing cellphones on planes.

So while domestic airlines rush to wire their cabins to provide in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity, there is no indication whether, or when, passengers in the United States might be able to make a cellphone call at 37,000 feet.

In much of the rest of the world, meanwhile, passengers on various foreign airlines are already routinely using cellphones and other personal wireless devices to make and receive calls in flight. Industry officials say cellphones can be used on more than 15,000 flights a month.

Despite dire warnings that cellphone use on planes would unleash social turbulence and possibly even violence in the cabin, there have been remarkably few complaints so far, industry executives and passengers say.

“I use mine often when I’m on a plane to communicate with my office, especially during long flights,” said Nakhle el Hajj, a news director at Al Arabiya News who is based in Dubai and travels frequently in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Mr. Hajj usually flies on the Dubai-based international carrier Emirates, which offers in-flight cellphone roaming service on 350 flights a week. He said that he spoke in a low voice when using his cellphone on a plane “to make sure I am not bothering people around me.”

The Federal Communications Commission in Washington currently prohibits in-flight cellphone use on planes, partly because of some unresolved questions about the potential for interference with aircraft navigation equipment, but mostly because of phone industry concerns that airborne cell signals radiate widely, randomly contacting different ground stations. That would create interference between systems and cause logistical problems for things like billing.

But on some foreign airlines, those technical issues have been resolved. On-board equipment regulates the signals by routing them via satellite to the correct point on the ground. Passengers with standard international roaming service can make or receive calls or text messages just as they would on the ground. They are billed as usual by their cellphone providers.

On Emirates, the service is provided by AeroMobile, a subsidiary of the communications company Telenor. AeroMobile, whose clients include Qantas and Malaysia Airlines, says the first authorized in-flight cellphone call on a commercial aircraft was made, using its system, on an Emirates flight in March 2008.

Another company, OnAir, provides service for many planes in the fleets of Royal Jordanian Airlines and the European discount carrier Ryanair. Agreements are in place for outfitting planes this year or next on other carriers, including Kingfisher Airlines, Qatar Airways, Hong Kong Airlines and British Airways’ new business-class service between London City and Kennedy International airports, which starts Tuesday.

OnAir, which also provides separate in-flight Wi-Fi connections at a fee, says that it will be offering its cellphone service on four continents in 2010.

Both OnAir and AeroMobile want to sign up American carriers but are concerned that Congress may ban in-flight cellphone use because of the noise issue. Even short of Congressional action, airlines are wary of installing expensive systems and then facing an adverse public reaction.

“It’s very emotional in the United States,” said Benoit Debains, the chief executive of OnAir. He insisted that the anxiety was overblown. For one thing, he and other industry executives said, standard cabin noise covers up much conversational noise, yet people with cellphones pressed to their ears in that environment somehow do not feel the need to speak louder to compensate.

“I remember on the first flight we did, we asked one guy, ‘What do you think about using the phone for voice in the cabin?’ He said he was against it. But we said, ‘You know, the guy across from you has been using his phone for the last five minutes.’ ”

In 2005, the Federal Communications Commission elicited howls of protest when it proposed removing the ban on in-flight cellphone use on planes equipped with systems like those used by OnAir and AeroMobile.

The resistance remains. Legislation called the Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace Act (the Hang Up Act) is pending in Congress to ban voice communications on wireless devices on commercial flights. More recently, the largest flight attendants’ union, the Association of Flight Attendants, urged Congress to ban in-flight cellphone calls as a threat to the “ability to maintain order in the cabin and to safely execute an emergency evacuation if necessary.”

Still, the horse is out of the barn — at least on four continents. Emirates recently logged its hundred-thousandth in-flight call, said Patrick Brannelly, the vice president for in-flight passenger communications.

Airlines that offer the service — which typically costs only what passengers are billed by their own mobile providers — usually restrict availability on nighttime flights when many people are sleeping.

“Before we launched this, we thought the social etiquette thing, the annoyance of other passengers, was going to be a problem,” Mr. Brannelly said. “We play a video at the beginning of the flight which asks people to be respectful of each other and to avoid speaking loudly, but we have been very surprised by the lack of negative comments.”

Emirates executives have even heard from skeptical pilots and flight attendants who mistakenly believed “the system was on but nobody was using it” on a particular flight, he said. “And I was able to go back to them and say, well 63 people had their phones on, and there were 22 phone calls and 68 messages.”

He added, “They were thinking it must be broken because they don’t hear anybody using it.”

The million dollar review: Going window-shopping

Gsmarena have posted an article comparing various super expensive phones. Here is their final conclusion.

Alright then, we're about to watch about 150,000 US dollars worth of mobile phones slip through our hands. There goes the title of the article but we won't fuss it. At least the million dollar liability coverage never came into force. Anyway, even if we reached the million mark we doubt it our conclusions would be any different.

But we hardly know anything about jewelry, so don't take our words for it. And no, we're not gonna tell you Vertu gets an edge out of a 3 MP camera, WLAN and Nokia-made interface. The rather obvious conclusion is just the opposite - the best handset is the one with the most diamonds.

So, these phones are out there and some people are buying. If you're next in line to unload a bag of cash, there's little we can say to change your mind. And don't let anyone tell you it can't be a smart buy. It can't be much worse than a Louis Vuitton hand bag, right?.

■If you change synchronization of email in a POP account to Manual, the account no longer continues to sync email automatically.
■When addressing a message, searching for a linked contact whose contact entry does not contain a complete last name (such as John S.) now returns the contact match correctly.
■When you accept a meeting invitation, the response is now correctly sent.
■Forwarded messages now correctly display the original message text with the formatting maintained.
■When you save an attached file—for example, a Word file attachment saved to Doc View—the file appears with the correct name in the application.
■An error message appears if you cannot send a message from an Exchange account because the account mailbox is full.
■The Email application always enforces EAS security policies—such as entering a password—when you try to access your Exchange account in Email.
Media Sync
■Media sync now allows for synchronizing photos without requiring the full-resolution originals. This provides faster display of high-quality full screen images and enables you to store more photos on the phone.
Memos
■Tapping text in a memo moves the cursor to the point that was tapped.
■When you send a memo using the Email Memo menu option, the memo formatting is maintained in the copied memo.
Messaging
■When you are in a conversation with an IM buddy, the buddy’s online status and custom message are displayed on the conversation screen.
■In Conversations view, a Copy All option is now available on the Edit submenu in the application menu. Selecting this option copies the entire contents of the conversation as plain text.
■When addressing a message, searching for a linked contact whose contact entry does not contain a complete last name (such as John S.) now returns the contact match correctly.
■If a contact contains an instant messaging (IM) address, the contact is linked to the IM account buddy entry.
■You can receive vCard contact entries as part of a multimedia message.
Music
■If playback of an audio file is paused or interrupted, when you resume playback, playback resumes at the point where it was paused. This applies to audio files for which the Genre field is defined as podcast, speech, spoken word, netcast, or audiobook only.

Google Irks Android Developers with Cyanogen Move

Google has created uproar among Android developers by calling out a so-called "modder" for creating a firmware modification known as CyanogenMod that bundles some of Google's proprietary applications. At issue is Google’s commitment to openness and developer perception of how well the company is managing that commitment.
Google has created uproar among Android developers by calling out a so-called "modder" for creating a firmware modification known as CyanogenMod that bundles some of Google's proprietary applications.

According to reports, Google has slapped a cease-and-desist order against the developer. "Google has reportedly filed a cease-and-desist order against one of the Android platform’s most prolific developers," said a GigaOm report. "The developer, Steve Kondik, who’s known as Cyanogen, offers a free, after-market firmware product that bundles closed-source Google apps such as Gmail, Market, Talk and YouTube. CyanogenMod, as the app is dubbed, claims 30,000 users, many of whom appear to be hardcore Android fans."

In a blog post regarding the situation, Steve Schultze, associate director of the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University, said:

"Android represents a careful balance on the part of Google, in which the company seeks to foster open platforms but maintain control over its proprietary (but free) services. Google has stated as much, in response to the current debate. Android is an exciting alternative to the largely closed-source model that has dominated the mobile market to date. Google closely integrated their Apps with the operating system in a way that makes for a tremendously useful platform, but in doing so hampered the ability of third-party developers to fully contribute to the system. Perhaps the problem is simply that they did not choose the right location to draw the line between open vs. closed source—or free-to-distribute vs. not."

In response to the uproar from developers, Dan Morrill, a Google engineer working in the developer relations team for Android, said, "Recently there's been some discussion about an exchange we had with the developer of one of those builds, and I've noticed some confusion around what is and isn't part of Android's open source code. I want to take a few moments to clear up some of those misconceptions, and explain how Google's apps for Android fit in."

Added Morrill:

"With a high-quality open platform in hand, we then returned to our goal of making our services available on users' phones. That's why we developed Android apps for many of our services like YouTube, Gmail, Google Voice, and so on. These apps are Google's way of benefiting from Android in the same way that any other developer can, but the apps are not part of the Android platform itself. We make some of these apps available to users of any Android-powered device via Android Market, and others are pre-installed on some phones through business deals. Either way, these apps aren't open source, and that's why they aren't included in the Android source code repository. Unauthorized distribution of this software harms us just like it would any other business, even if it's done with the best of intentions."

However, Google's response has done little to quell developer reaction.

In a message on a mailing list for New York Android Software Developers, a developer identified as Chris Stratton said, "To me, this really highlights a question that has been worrying me ever since getting involved in Android: Is Android open source for end users, or only for OEM phone manufacturers who hold the bootloader keys and can negotiate the licenses for the proprietary parts needed to give it full function?"

Added Stratton:

"This is very worrisome, because it's the exact opposite of the Stallman-esque 'right to repair' behind Android's GPL Linux kernel. It may well ultimately prove possible to create some kind of tool for in-phone combination of a customized platform built from open sources with the proprietary binaries already on the phone, but the effective message that 'only OEMs should expect to retain full functionality when changing the platform' seems to suggest that it is only the theoretical Android, and not the practical one, which is actually open source."

Another poster to the New York Android Software Developers list, identified as "Hong," said: "I'm very disappointed at how Google handled CyanogenMod. There are many users [who] got an Android phone just because of CM ROM who would otherwise go for some other phones. Google has effectively told the ROM community that it's illegal to distribute Google apps in Android ROM. But an Android ROM w/o Gmail/Google account settings is basically unusable."

Moreover, said Hong, "I'm putting some Android work on hold and resuming back to my old iPhone dev self, and will also resume my [Palm] Pre webOS projects."

Speaking of the iPhone, Palm and the webOS, in a Phandroid post titled "Eff Google, Screw Android: The Backlash Begins," Jean Baptiste Queru, a Google engineer working on Android is cited for tweeting his disdain for Google's handling of the situation. The Phandroid post reads:

"This is bad. Really bad. So bad that one of the lead Android developers themselves are insinuating this is worth walking away from the platform. Jean-Baptiste Queru has just tweeted, 'To my Apple, Microsoft and Palm buddies: are you hiring to work on mobile stuff?'”

In addition, a commenter identified as "Bob" responding to Schultze's blog post said:

"Finally the world is waking up to Google and its 'open-source' strategy. The company is a serial abuser of the entire notion of 'open'—cynically wielding it as a weapon in business.

"The company has never *joined* an open-source project. It just starts them—ensuring that by the strength of the number or coders it has, it keeps control over the projects. It does this even when there are well-established projects already, screwing over other communities in the process—Mozilla vs. Chrome, Android or ChromeOS vs. MobLin or LiMo.

"Bottom line—Google uses the 'open' concept cynically. It makes things open when it suits its interests (and always retains control) and it locks down otherwise.

"And the simpering community rolls over and takes it because it's the darling 'do no evil' Google."

Google 'Conflicted'

Meanwhile, Brian Gupta, a New York Android developer and engineer at Brandorr Group, told eWEEK, "I am certain that Google is conflicted about the whole thing. On one hand, the folks working on Android truly appreciate the uptake by the hacker and modding community, and are working to figure out how to accommodate their needs. On the other hand, technically the Cyanogen mods did include proprietary binary code from a number of sources, including Google and HTC, and were being redistributed without a distribution license."

Added Gupta:

"My guess is that Google has known for some time what was going on, but probably thought 'best not to upset the apple cart' while Android was in its infancy, with only one or two devices from a single manufacturer available on a single carrier. Now that we are on the verge of Android devices being shipped from at least five hardware vendors with over half a dozen carriers, Google probably felt that they needed to get a handle on this. I sense they feared things getting out of control with modders doing willy-nilly ports of innovations from one vendor/carrier to another—e.g., Motoblur on HTC devices and HTC Sense on Motorola devices. I think Google's legal team had a strong part in what took place, and forced action."

Gupta also said he believes that Google needed to engage the community before sending out the cease-and-desist order. "They hadn't made their position clear and depending on your point of view seemed to tacitly be condoning what was going on," he said. "Going forward, I really do think they need to work out a policy that allows people to rebundle the apps that come with a device and release blessed custom firmware for that same device."

"All in all," Gupta said, "it seems that this is a serious setback, but not large enough of one to stop the momentum that Android has built to this point."

Gupta is optimistic:

"At this point, I really don't want to see what is truly the most promising open mobile platform crash and burn, just as it is about to take off. That said, now that Google has rebooted the community, I think that people are retooling and refocusing on actually making the open-source promise of Android a reality. JBQ, a Google developer, kicked off an informal project to make the open-source build of Android actually useful out of the box."

Meanwhile, in a Sept 27 post responding to Google's cease-and-desist move, the CyanogenMod site said:

"The issue that’s raised is the redistribution of Google’s proprietary applications like Maps, GTalk, Market, and YouTube. These are not part of the open source project and are only part of 'Google Experience' devices. They are Google’s intellectual property and I intend to respect that. I will no longer be distributing these applications as part of CyanogenMod. But it’s OK. None of the go-fast stuff that I do involves any of this stuff anyway. We need these applications though, because we all rely so heavily on their functionality. I’d love for Google to hand over the keys to the kingdom and let us all have it for free, but that’s not going to happen. And who can blame them?"

In addition, "There are lots of things we can do as end users and modders, though, without violating anyone’s rights," the Cyanogen blog said. "Most importantly, we are entitled to back up our software. Since I don’t work with any of these closed source applications directly, what I intend to do is simply ship the next version of CyanogenMod as a 'bare bones' ROM. You’ll be able to make calls, MMS, take photos, etc. In order to get our beloved Google sync and applications back, you’ll need to make a backup first. I’m working on an application that will do this for you."

Motorola Cliq Smartphone with Android to Debut Oct. 19

T-Mobile USA says it will begin selling Motorola's Cliq smartphone, running the Android mobile OS, on Oct. 19 to existing customers at $199 plus a two-year service contract. Sales to the general public will begin Nov. 4. The Cliq comes with Motorola's Motoblur syncing solution.

T-Mobile USA announced Sept. 29 it will begin selling Motorola's Cliq slider smartphone Oct. 19 to existing customers, with sales to the general public starting Nov. 4. T-Mobile put a $199 price—with a two-year contract—on Motorola's first phone based on Google's Android operating system.

Motorola's first foray with Android features a 3.1-inch full touch screen with a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels, plus a slide-out, four-row QWERTY keyboard. The Cliq also features a full HTML browser with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. Bluetooth 2.1 is included, and so is a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus, Instant Video playback and DVD quality. There's a music player, a 3.5-millimeter headset jack and dual microphones with noise-cancellation technology.

Motorola introduced the Cliq at a September press event, along with Motoblur, a syncing solution that will debut on the Cliq.

Motoblur can sync contacts, social network posts and messages, photos, e-mails, and more from sources such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Gmail, LastFM, and personal and work e-mail accounts and post it all to a user's home screen. Content is fed to the screen in streams, and when a contact calls or is called, his or her status and profile picture appear on the screen.

Contacts, log-in information, customizations and messages are backed up to a local Motoblur server, so lost or stolen devices can be wiped and the data restored on another phone. Using the Cliq's integrated A-GPS, lost or stolen phones can also be located from the online user portal.

Still another sync feature is Motorola Media Link, which enables users to sync their phones, PCs and the Web, as well as transfer photos, videos and music.

Push e-mail and POP3/IMAP, such as Gmail and Yahoo, as well as MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) and SMS (Short Message Service), are supported. The Cliq measures 4.49 by 2.28 by 0.61 inches and weighs 5.7 ounces.

Palm Repeats Plans After Report Verizon May Snub Pre

Palm Inc., maker of the Pre smart phone, reiterated its plan to work with additional wireless carriers in the second half of fiscal 2010.

The announcement came after TheStreet.com reported that Verizon Wireless scrapped plans to sell the Pre, sending Palm shares down 4.7 percent yesterday. Derick Mains, a spokesman for Sunnyvale, California-based Palm, declined to say whether the statement was in response to the report, saying the company doesn’t comment on rumor or speculation.

Palm, which currently offers the Pre exclusively through Sprint Nextel Corp., said last week that it would distribute its devices through other carriers in the second half, without saying which ones. Verizon, the biggest U.S. wireless carrier, had said in May that it planned to offer the Pre after Sprint’s exclusive contract ends.

TheStreet.com, citing unidentified people close to the talks, said yesterday that Verizon abandoned a plan to offer the Pre in January because the phone hasn’t become a blockbuster seller. Jim Gerace, a spokesman for Verizon, declined to comment.

The Pre, released in June, isn’t fueling the kind of sales that some analysts and investors had anticipated. This month, Palm forecast revenue of $240 million to $270 million in the current quarter, including sales recognized over the life of phone contracts. That missed the $305.9 million average estimate of analysts in a Bloomberg survey.

Comeback Plan

Palm Chief Executive Officer Jon Rubinstein, 53, is counting on the Pre to reverse nine straight quarterly losses. The company is ramping up marketing this quarter as it takes on Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry. The Pre, like the iPhone, lets people surf the Web and call up information from their phones by swiping the surface of a touch screen.

Palm rose 21 cents to $16.37 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares have climbed more than fivefold this year on speculation that the Pre will lead to a rebound at Palm.

Verizon Wireless, based in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, is jointly owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc. AT&T Inc. ranks second in the U.S. wireless market, followed by Sprint.

Common Platform Alliance Qualifies Synopsys IC Validator for 32-nm Design Rule Checking

In-Design Physical Verification Pivotal in Reducing Time to Tapeout for Advanced Designs.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., -- Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS), a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design, verification and manufacturing, announced that the Common Platform technology alliance, a unique technology collaboration between IBM, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and Samsung Electronics, has qualified IC Validator for 32-nanometer (nm) process design rule checking on Common Platform technology. Synopsys and the Common Platform companies are continuing with the collaboration to complete the qualification of IC Validator at 28nm on Common Platform technology. IC Validator, the newest addition to the Galaxy(TM) Implementation Platform, is a full signoff DRC/LVS solution. In addition, IC Validator has been uniquely architected as an ideal add-on to IC Compiler for in-design physical verification, enabling place and route engineers to accelerate time to tapeout and improve manufacturability by enabling physical verification within the implementation flow. This qualification enables Common Platform customers to deploy IC Validator into production use at 32nm and see benefits from the productivity advantages of in-design physical verification in conjunction with the IC Compiler place and route solution.

"We believe that in-design physical verification is essential to significantly reduce physical verification turnaround time given the complexities at emerging nodes," said Henry Law, vice president, design services division for Chartered, on behalf of the Common Platform alliance companies. "Architected for 45nm and below process nodes, IC Validator offers a highly flexible programming language that makes runset creation at these complex nodes easy and concise. Our qualification of IC Validator confirmed its signoff accuracy and productivity benefits of in-design physical verification. Given the observed benefits, we are committed to qualifying IC Validator for the Common Platform 28nm process node."

Prevalent approaches to physical design and verification can be described as "implement-then-verify" and result in multiple iterations between design and signoff. In-design physical verification accelerates design closure by enabling sign-off quality rule checking and fixing during the design process, avoiding late stage surprises that can jeopardize project schedules. Other benefits include incremental processing, automatic error detection and fixing, near-linear scalability across multiple CPU cores and the elimination of expensive stream-outs and stream-ins. IC Validator also offers significant automation and innovative features such as DRC error classification or DRC waiver, multi-user collaboration, customized reporting and on-the-fly error reporting that can further improve physical verification turnaround time.

While in-design physical verification is facilitated by seamless integration with IC Compiler, IC Validator's foundry-endorsed, signoff-accurate engine is its core strength. Powered by its hybrid data and command-processing engine, IC Validator is a full signoff DRC/LVS tool offering the high accuracy necessary for leading-edge process nodes, excellent scalability for efficient utilization of available hardware and high programmability for easier runset development. For runset writers and CAD managers, IC Validator offers a flexible programming language that can cut runset size from 2 to 10x, lowering the cost of setting up, maintaining and modifying the physical verification environment.

"Common Platform technology companies have always been at the forefront in defining high-productivity flows for advanced processes," said Bijan Kiani, vice president of product marketing, design and manufacturing products at Synopsys. "This qualification marks an important milestone in supporting leading-edge technology from the Common Platform alliance and will bring IC Validator's unique value proposition to our mutual customers and partners. We look forward to our continued collaboration towards the 28-nm qualification."

WALTHAM, Mass., -- Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), announced that Ovum, a leading independent market research firm, released a new study this month that names Red Bend the market leader in firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating. Red Bend increased its market share to 64% of FOTA clients shipped in mobile handsets during fourth quarter 2008. This number is more than three times its closest competitor. Red Bend also increased its market share to 54% of FOTA-enabled handsets in active use. The report, "Support for Device Management in Mobile Handsets: 2008-2011 (4Q08 update), 8 September 2009," is available at http://www.redbend.com/resources/research-reports.asp.

"Red Bend's market share continues to increase as software updating becomes more important to the mobile user experience," said Adam Leach, principal analyst with Ovum's Mobile User Experience advisory. "Red Bend has gained traction with both operators and manufacturers, and its FOTA client is now used by four of the top five handset vendors, as well as with a number of vendors in Japan."

The study examines data from more than 1,300 mobile handsets launched worldwide since 2003. This report is the sixth iteration of a series of quarterly studies focusing on three technologies based on standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA): FOTA, OMA CP (client provisioning) and OMA DM (device management). These technologies are increasingly being adopted by global operators and handset manufacturers for remote configuration, defect fixing, diagnostics and software management of mobile handsets. Ovum states year-end 2008 shipments totaled 431 million FOTA-enabled handsets (representing 35% of global shipments), 743 million OMA CP-enabled handsets (representing 60% of global shipments) and 410 million OMA DM-enabled handsets (representing 33% of global shipments).

Red Bend's MSM portfolio includes vRapid Mobile® for FOTA updating, managing software components over the air (SCOTA) and application management as well as vDirect Mobile(TM) for device management.

Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Market Returns to Growth With Strong Showing in Asia, Heavy Reading Reports

Huawei, ZTE Gain Ground as Cisco's Market Lead Continues to Decline.

NEW YORK, -- Worldwide sales of carrier Ethernet switch/routers (CESRs) grew 5 percent quarter-over-quarter in the second quarter of 2009 to $452 million, according to the Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Quarterly Market Tracker service published by Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com), the market research division of TechWeb's Light Reading.

Heavy Reading projects the global CESR market will continue its recovery in the second half of 2009 to end the year at about $1.8 billion. Prospects appear good for the CESR market to reach $2.78 billion by 2013, due to underlying market fundamentals favoring a shift from legacy Sonet/SDH- and ATM-based networks toward high-performance carrier Ethernet/MPLS-based networks.

"The worldwide CESR market generally demonstrated signs of increased stabilization, with growth in Asia, Latin America, and North America more than offsetting continued weakness in Europe," said Stan Hubbard, Senior Analyst for Heavy Reading and author of the CESR Quarterly Market Tracker. "Double-digit sequential revenue growth by No. 3 CESR supplier Huawei and No. 4 ZTE propelled Asia to a new all-time regional quarterly market share high of 38 percent. Meanwhile, Latin America had an impressive triple-digit jump, fueled by a particularly strong performance by No. 2 Alcatel-Lucent in the region."

The market managed a recovery in 2Q09 despite intensifying vendor competition, service providers' continued limited access to capital, and the sluggish global economic recovery. "Increased competition has been especially harmful to Cisco, which lacks a next-generation flagship CESR platform," said Hubbard. "Today, there are two dozen suppliers of CESR platforms. That's double the number of players in 3Q07, when Cisco owned 58% of a market that was actually larger than in 2Q09.

Heavy Reading estimates that No. 1 Cisco's market share fell another 4 points sequentially in 2Q09 and closed 19 points lower than its share high in 3Q07. No. 2 Alcatel-Lucent held steady, while No. 3 Huawei and No. 4 ZTE each gained several share points in 2Q09. Brocade was No. 5 and Extreme was No. 6 in the most recent quarter.

Heavy Reading's Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Quarterly Market Tracker delivers a complete accounting of telecom equipment manufacturer revenues in CESR sector, including quarter-by-quarter revenue and market share breakouts for each supplier, sales by geographic region and application, and revenue projections through 2013 by region and application. The quarterly tracking service also analyzes each vendor's market strategy and identifies and analyzes customer wins, providing granular insight into this emerging market sector unavailable from other sources. It provides a comprehensive list of more than 290 operators and other entities around the world that have purchased CESR platforms.

The Heavy Reading report analyzes 21 vendors that are now generating sales from CESR products or could be in a position to roll out CESR products within the next 12 months. Equipment vendors examined include Alcatel-Lucent, ANDA Networks, Ciena, Cisco Systems, ECI Telecom, Ericsson, Extreme Networks, Foundry Networks, Hitachi Cable, Huawei, IBM, Juniper Networks, Maipu, MRV Communications, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel Networks, Orckit-Corrigent, Telco Systems, Tejas Networks, Tellabs, and ZTE.

The CESR Quarterly Market Tracker is distributed in PowerPoint and Excel formats. Quarterly reports may be purchased individually or as part of an annual subscription service.
