Muzicall Plans To Offer Mobile Playback Tones

Two of the major labels and several independents are in talks to supply content to new mobile-music service provider Muzicall. The U.K.-based start-up, which launched yesterday (Feb. 10), is led by CEO Mark Collins, whose telecommunications background includes stints at BT, Marconi and Sprint International.

Muzicall is discussing possible deals with Warner Music, Sony Music and the U.K.'s Assn. of Independent Music.

Independent label V2 Records has agreed to make its catalog available for services developed by Muzicall for cell-phone operators and is in the process of signing a deal, according to Beth Appleton, V2 head of new media.

Muzicall's key service will be music ringback tones: clips of original sound recordings that are heard by the caller, instead of the standard ringing sound, before the phone is answered. Ringback customers (the ones receiving the call) pay the mobile-phone operator to play clips of master recordings.

Ringbacks are an emerging trend in Asia. Muzicall, which has yet to announce deals with operators, believes it can tap into that popularity and boost the sector for the rest of the world.

"If we look at ringtones and how the model is moving from polyphonic tones to real tunes, it is already beginning to take off and I think ringback tones [are] going to be an interesting area to watch," Appleton says.

Steve Johnston, head of licensing at MusicIndie, AIM'S new-media arm, says, "The labels are supporting Muzicall's efforts, and we have been discussing terms for a license when a deal with operators fall into place."

The ringback clip is created by taking the original recording and editing it down into a synopsis, instead of a sample of any part of the song. The use of master recordings for ringback tones is expected to boost revenues for labels. Conventional ringtones, which are merely reproductions of a song, benefit music publishers.

"The record companies and the telecom companies missed the boat on ringtones because the creators didn't have to pay them anything," says Nick Price, Muzicall's director of music content. "But because we use original tracks, the labels can make money."

Muzicall was inspired by the success of ringback tones in the pioneering South Korean market, where more than 16 million users are expected to spend $200 million on ringbacks this year, according to Muzicall figures. The service is also growing in China, Hong Kong and Japan.

Muzicall quotes projections by U.K. research company Datamonitor, which predicts that the ringtone maket will be worth $4 billion globally by 2008. It also cites U.K.-based ARC Group, which forecasts that there will be 700 million regular mobile-music subscribers worldwide by 2006.

Muzicall is partially owned by CH2M HILL, a $2.5 billion global engineering company headquartered in Colorado with offices in 44 countries. "This guarantees we can provide our telecoms clients a global infrastructure," Collins says.

Moreover, Price owns a music-publishing company, Wasted, and co-owns three recording studios (two in the U.K. and one in Dallas) for re-mixing tracks into ringback clips. The clips are watermarked and are embedded with all the necessary data, such as the artist's name and song title, to ensure they can be traced when distributed.

Muzicall says each ringback tone could cost £1.50 (U.S. $2.80) for each new tune, plus a £1 ($1.85) a month. This is based on a model offered for Caller Tunes, a ringback tone service offered by operator T-Mobile in the U.K. and one of the few in Europe.

Under Muzicall's plan, the operator, the label and Muzicall would each take one-third of the net price. The label will pay the artist from its share, while Muzicall will pay the collection societies from its share.

HP Brings Mobile Printing to the Masses with Expanded HP iPrint Photo Application

San Diego – HP announced that HP iPrint Photo, the first free mobile printing application that allows for quick and easy wireless printing of 4 x 6-inch photos for iPhone and iPod touch, will now be available for phones using the Symbian and WinMo operating systems. Additionally, HP will offer an enhanced version of the current HP iPrint Photo for iPhone and iPod touch.

In January 2009, HP introduced the HP iPrint Photo application for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch, where one of the biggest challenges for consumers was the ability to print from their mobile phone. The rollout of the application to further devices marks an important change – the ability to print from almost anywhere at any time.
“A recent survey found that 45.6 percent of smart phone owners capture photos once per day or once per week and nearly 70 percent want to print photos taken from their phone(1),” said Antonio Rodriguez, chief technologist for HP's IPG Inkjet and Web Solutions Group. “HP looks forward to making this process easier, more convenient and fun for more consumers.”

The expanded HP iPrint Photo application will offer more consumers greater convenience and time savings as wireless printing is the extension of the smart phone photo capture and viewing experience. Users will be able to print the images they want – when they want them.

Motorola Forecast Beats Estimates on Cost Reductions

Motorola Inc. predicted fourth- quarter profit that may exceed analysts’ estimates after job cuts helped the biggest U.S. mobile-phone maker beat projections for the previous period. The stock jumped as much as 10 percent.

Profit, excluding some costs, will be 7 cents to 9 cents a share, Schaumburg, Illinois-based Motorola said today in a statement. Analysts in a Bloomberg survey projected 6 cents. Third-quarter profit on that basis was 2 cents a share, exceeding the average prediction for a breakeven quarter.

Motorola has eliminated at least 8,000 jobs since December and shuffled executives after posting losses of more than $4 billion over the past two years. The company aims to recover market share lost to Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry by introducing phones that run Google Inc.’s Android software, including the Droid and the Cliq.

“They have been very effective in cost cutting and the Droid really is the best device Motorola has come up with since 2005,” said Tero Kuittinen, an analyst at MKM Partners LP in Greenwich, Connecticut, with a “sell” rating on the stock.

Motorola rose 71 cents, or 8.9 percent, to $8.67 at 9:49 a.m. on the New York Stock Exchange, after reaching $8.76. Before today, the stock had climbed 80 percent this year.

Droid, Cliq

Net income was $12 million, or 1 cent a share, after a loss of $397 million, or 18 cents, a year earlier. Job cuts helped Motorola reduce production costs by 36 percent to $3.65 billion.

Revenue dropped 27 percent to $5.45 billion. Analysts predicted $5.54 billion on average.

The company also named Edward Fitzpatrick chief financial officer, effective immediately. Fitzpatrick, 43, had been Motorola’s acting CFO since February.

Motorola’s share of the global mobile-phone market dropped by almost half in the second quarter to 5.6 percent, according to Stamford, Connecticut-based research firm Gartner Inc. Apple and RIM gained, helped by increasing demand for phones that surf the Web, send e-mail and shoot video.

Revenue at Motorola’s mobile-phone business fell 46 percent to $1.69 billion in the third quarter, as shipments plunged by almost half to 13.6 million handsets. The division’s operating loss narrowed to $183 million from $840 million.

Yesterday, Motorola introduced its second phone based on the Android software, the Droid, after unveiling the Cliq last month. Both cost about $200 on a two-year contract and go on sale in November for the holiday shopping season.

Networks, Set-Top Boxes

The Droid features a larger screen than the iPhone and allows users to run multiple applications at once. The device gets Motorola back in the market for high-end phones, from which it has been missing, co-Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Jha, who runs the mobile-phone unit, said in an interview this week.

“This is a rebuilt company, with new leadership and a new platform,” said Matt Thornton, an analyst at Avian Securities LLC in Boston. “If these guys are successful in making the transition to be a smart-phone player, the next four to six quarters could show some marked improvement.” Thornton has a “positive” rating on the stock.

Motorola’s smart-phone sales will be a “significant driver” of its financial performance next year and the majority of phones introduced in 2010 will be Android devices, Jha said on a conference call with analysts today.

“I will be surprised if we don’t break even in at least one quarter in 2010,” he said, referring to the mobile-phone unit.

Motorola’s other units are run by co-CEO Greg Brown. Profit at the home-entertainment unit, which builds television set-top boxes, fell 24 percent to $199 million as sales fell 15 percent to $2.01 billion.

The enterprise mobility unit, which sells bar-code scanners to retailers and supplies emergency and police departments with walkie-talkies, reported a 24 percent drop in profit to $306 million, as sales fell 13 percent to $1.77 billion.

Mobile gaming evolves – Ovi Store is here

We’ve been busy evolving our mobile gaming service and building up the portfolio of games in Ovi Store. Currently, we have more than a thousand games available in Ovi Store supported by 100 Nokia device models and are growing the platform and portfolio as quickly as possible.

If you haven’t checked out Ovi Store lately, we suggest you stop by store.ovi.com/games for the latest mobile games for your Nokia device. And what’s best, not only will you be able to get a wide variety of games like Pac-Man, The Sims 3 and Guitar Hero World Tour Mobile in the Ovi Store, but you will have access to hundreds of new ones like Sky Force Reload and EA SPORTS FIFA 10 from a wide range of publishers from 65 countries.

As we continue to move Nokia’s services under the Ovi umbrella, Ovi Store is the one-stop-shop for all your mobile content. If you’re looking for the latest apps, games and other mobile content, Ovi Store is available in more than 180 countries. And remember, content is for everyone so start downloading today.

So, you might ask, what will happen to the current N-Gage platform?
N-Gage games can be purchased until the end of September 2010. While the N-Gage.com site together with the N-Gage Arena and other community features will remain in operation throughout 2010, the Ovi Store will be the new central place for all the mobile games that Nokia and other publishers offer from this point forward. We will no longer publish new games for the N-Gage platform.

What will happen to N-Gage Arena?
N-Gage Arena will remain in operation throughout 2010 and players can e.g. keep posting their high scores until then. We understand that people value the ability to manage their games and communicate about them, and we are working on offering such community elements through Ovi. Games publishers are free to use community features of their choosing in their apps, the feature set is not defined by Nokia. Social Networking applications are some of the most downloaded on Ovi Store, emphasing the power of connecting people.

What will happen to my games?
Your games are safe - all your purchased N-Gage games will continue to work on your N-Gage compatible mobile device and they’re yours to keep. However, community features of the games will not be functional after 2010.

Do you have plans to bring community elements to the Ovi Store gaming experience?
Yes, we understand how important community is to our gamers. You can already post reviews of games and other apps in the Ovi Store. We are actively working on offering more community elements through Ovi and we encourage developers to use community features in their applications. Stay tuned – there’s more to come on this.

Why doesn’t Nokia keep N-Gage as a separate gaming platform?
As mobile gaming evolves and begins to encompass social gaming, we want to offer one store front with an even broader portfolio of games – games for everyone. It’s much more convenient to have one place to get all your mobile games, and this it what Ovi Store https://store.ovi.com/games provides. Mobile gaming is one of the most popular activities in the Ovi Store, with games being the #2 most downloaded category for premium content. And besides having all mobile games in one place, people can access other services like Mail, Maps, Music and many more via www.ovi.com.

What will happen to N-Gage.com?
The N-Gage.com site will remain in operation throughout 2010, with the exception of the N-Gage Store which will remain open until the end of September 2010. However, we recommend people to visit Ovi Store to play the latest games – many familiar games and so much more.

Will you stop shipping devices with the N-Gage application pre-installed?
We will continue to sell devices with N-Gage application pre-installed for some time, however we will no longer ship new devices with the application pre-installed.
Games will be available through the Ovi Store which is already supported by 100 Nokia device models and growing. Ovi Store will be pre-installed on most new compatible Nokia devices including Symbian S60 & Series 40 from Q4 2009.

Thank you for being part of the N-Gage community and your participation over the years. It is important we share this information with you first as we know how much the N-Gage Community means to you, and that being up to date on the latest gaming information is of importance.

We appreciate your contributions and loyalty to the N-Gage community and service, and we hope to continue to hear from you via Ovi. See you in the Games!

Huawei' s Intelligent Packet Network chosen to upgrade Maroc Telecom mobile broadband

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunication solutions to operators around the world, today announced that it has been selected by Maroc Telecom to replace their existing mobile packet core with Huawei' s leading Intelligent Packet Network (IPN) 2.0. This replacement will allow Maroc to increase the capacity for 3G mobile users and significantly expand the ability to manage the increased traffic, as well as offer new types of mobile broadband services.

Maroc Telecom is the largest operator in Morocco and operates both fixed and mobile networks. In 2008, Moroc began to offer high-speed 3G mobile data service. The success of this service uncovered limitations in the existing core data network, which restricted the overall capacity of the network and also limited Moroc' s ability to offer new services to their users. Huawei' s IPN 2.0 solution offers the industry' s largest capacity PS equipment and provides an innovative Service Usage Reporter (SUR) for visual monitoring of customer trends and a powerful Policy and Charging Rules Founction (PCRF) for bandwidth management and to support innovative new services.

"We are very pleased to be chosen for this project and are confident that Maroc Telecom will continue to maintain their market leadership in mobile broadband by deploying IPN 2.0." Mr. Huang Jin, Vice President of Core Network, Huawei, said, "Leading operators, such as Moroc, T-Mobile and Telefonica are finding that the capabilities of IPN 2.0 increase their competitive edge and bring advantages which flow quickly to the bottom line."

Until then, while Intel's will not be able to reduce power consumption, the probability of its chipsets in mobile devices (phones, media players, etc.) are not too large. Google: A Cloud In The Hand

The company's GPS mobile app heralds new competition.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Google has developed a powerful new mobile phone application--interactive mobile phone-based driving directions--that is designed to increase the attractiveness of its Android phone operating system. It will also likely mean trouble for makers of existing GPS car navigation systems.

Even more, it signals a bigger effort by Google ( GOOG - news - people ) to increase its reach to include the organization of people's information and lives to sources far from the standard Internet.

The new application, called Maps for Mobile, is capable of a number of things unavailable on standard GPS systems, including real-time traffic information, access to photographs of landmarks (like highway ramps or a destination), and a strong voice-activated search function. In a demonstration at the Googleplex, the system correctly responded to the voice request "navigate to the museum in San Francisco with the King Tut exhibition" with both directions, drive time and a green indicator that the traffic was light. Had the traffic been heavy, the color would have turned to yellow, then red, and the projected drive time would have increased.

These and other features, such as remembering previous destinations and searching along the route for favorite burger joints, are possible because the application ties into Google's enormous system of data centers, a "cloud" of computer servers that may host one's personal information, like contacts and search history, and public info, like street-level photos. The traffic information is derived in part from an awareness of how rapidly others using the Google system are moving to their destinations, and thus will strengthen if Google Maps for Mobile picks up users.

At present, the application works only on Google's Android 2.0 mobile operating system. The demonstration model was a Motorola ( MOT - news - people ) phone on the Verizon ( VZ - news - people ) network. Motorola, which was part of the original Android project two years ago, is likely to announce products in conjunction with the Google app. (See "Google's Navigation Bombshell.") Like other Google applications, the service is free to consumers (Google usually makes money off such products by sharpening its mobile search results and advertising, based on the usage data it gathers, or by growing and increasing Internet usage habits.)

Vic Gundotra, vice president of engineering at Google, said that his company was "eagerly working" with Apple ( AAPL - news - people ) to provide the app for the popular iPhone. In total, he said, Google has over 50 million active users of its current mobile phone map application, which does not do driving

HTC CEO On Android, Verizon, Microsoft

TAOYUAN, TAIWAN -- For more than six months, HTC enjoyed the privilege of being the only cellphone maker to have a handset running on Google's mobile platform, Android.

Several manufacturers, including Samsung, Motorola ( MOT - news - people ) and LG have since crowded in. Motorola, which announced a new Android phone with Verizon ( VZ - news - people ) Wireless on Oct. 28, is forging particularly close ties with Google ( GOOG - news - people ).

Peter Chou, HTC's chief executive and president, takes a measured view of the competition. "You cannot expect you are the only player in town. … You need other players to come and make the ecosystem stronger," he told Forbes in an interview at HTC's Taiwanese headquarters.

HTC is strengthening partnerships too. The company will introduce an Android phone on Verizon later this year, Chou confirmed. He says the handset, which will likely debut in the first week of November, is a sign of HTC's growing rapport with Verizon, the largest U.S. wireless operator. "We've worked with Verizon for several years, but this is the first time we've been elevated to the role of core supplier," he says. "We are very excited about that opportunity."

Chou declined to comment on his negotiations with AT&T ( T - news - people ), the one major U.S. carrier that has yet to carry HTC's Android phones. Instead, he hinted that HTC would do less customization work for some of its carrier customers. "In the past, we perhaps made too many phone models," says Chou. "Now we're putting more effort into seeing how we can sell more volume per model."

In the cutthroat smart phone market, even winning favored status with operators can't guarantee strong sales. That's one reason why Chou recently approved HTC's first global advertising campaign. The ads, which play on the word "you" as a sign of the company's commitment to its customers, will roll out across 20 countries in coming weeks.

The multimillion-dollar campaign represents a second phase of brand development for HTC, says Chou. Between 2006 and early 2009, HTC was transitioning from being a contract manufacturer to a company that emphasized its own brand. Now, the company feels prepared to push toward a "premium, top-tier brand" that can take on household names like Apple ( AAPL - news - people ) and Nokia ( NOK - news - people ), says Chou.

The fact that HTC's newest products, such as its Hero and Tattoo phones, all clearly feature the company's name and logo should bolster the campaign, he adds. (Chou says he's not concerned that the ads have drawn comparisons to Yahoo!'s ( YHOO - news - people ) new "It's You" marketing campaign. The Internet giant occupies a different market, he points out.)

"Whether we can compete with [companies like Nokia] on scale is a different subject, but our profile needs to be viewed as first tier," says Chou. "It's very hard to use a second-tier brand to compete with these companies."

HTC may be updating its brand, but it's sticking by its longtime partner, Microsoft ( MSFT - news - people ). Though other handset makers such as Motorola have dropped Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system in favor of Android, Chou says HTC has no plans to follow. That doesn't mean he's not frustrated with the software. "Windows Mobile innovation has been a little slow and interest in Windows Mobile phones has been declining," he admits.

HTC's solution is the HD2, a wafer-thin handset that combines a 4.3-inch touchscreen with a high-end processor for snappy downloads and fast Web browsing. The phone, which was unveiled earlier this month, runs the latest version of Windows Mobile (6.5) as well as some flashy HTC software. "We're working hard on these kinds of products to get excitement about Windows Mobile back," says Chou.

Gadget fans have been clamoring for an Android version of the HD2, but Chou hints that the handset will stay as is. "Technically, we could make the HD2 an Android phone, but I have to take care of Windows Mobile," says Chou.

HTC's loyalty also extends to Google, even amid reports that the search giant is developing its own Android handset. "Google tries to do things differently from the rest of the industry," Chou notes. While some of Google's actions can be "destructive," Chou says, HTC still values the partnership. "We've worked with Microsoft for 13 years … I also believe we can work with Google for a long time," he adds.

As more gadgets tap mobile data networks, phone makers have started producing netbooks, e-readers and tablet computers. Chou says HTC will buck the trend. "There is a lot of pressure to do these things, but we are a relatively small company and need to be very picky," he says.

Ebay’s iPhone app rings up sales of $400m

Shoppers have spent more than $400m this year on merchandise using Ebay’s application for the Apple iPhone, a striking indication that consumers are becoming more comfortable with mobile shopping.

More than 4.6m people have downloaded the Ebay app, using it to buy not just books and clothes, but also a Lamborghini, a $150,000 boat, and a Bentley.

“The lines between mobile and fixed devices are beginning to blur,” said Ebay chief executive John Donahoe. “I may do my research on my laptop, but actually make my purchase on my mobile device.”

Amazon also has a popular iPhone app and others are racing to improve their mobile storefronts.

The Ebay app, which has been available since the launch of Apple’s App Store website in June, has undergone several iterations since its initial release. Mr Donahoe said the company would release an “enhanced version” by the end of the year.

Some people are using the Ebay app to watch items that they are actively bidding on. “If you’re committed to buying something and you want to win that auction, you sign yourself up for alerts and make yourself aware of when someone bids higher,” said Sucharita Mulpuru, an e-commerce analyst with Forrester Research.

Mr Donahoe said consumers were using the Ebay iPhone app in a variety of ways. “Some people search for an item, bid and buy all on the iPhone,” he said. “Others search on their desktop [computer], and end up completing the transaction on the iPhone.”

Ebay’s early success with its iPhone app has been aided by its previous efforts to keep bidders informed about their active auctions through text alerts. Its app is the most popular in the Lifestyle category of the App Store, while Amazon’s app ranks tenth.

Amazon would not disclose the number of downloads or revenues from its app. But it suggested the app was gaining traction. “We’re pleased with how it’s going,” it said.

Ms Mulpuru said users were likely to use the Amazon app to look for cheaper products while they were shopping in brick and mortar locations. “It’s more about price comparison,” she said. “I imagine it’s also pretty successful.”

“Companies are becoming more mindful of what they put in the mobile shopping experience, and the comfort levels consumers have with mobile is fuelling this,” said Ms Mulpuru. There was growing evidence smartphones were becoming an important part of the retail process.

Android 2.0 Eclair running on my rooted G1 =D

Looks like Verizon's Motorola Droid isn't gonna be the 1st phone to have Android 2.0 =D
This is actually the Android 2.0 SDK ported (very roughly) over to the G1/Dream from Akira Harada.
If you're excited as I am for Android 2.0 Eclair then this is a great way to get a preview of what it will be like (not necessarily how it will perform).
As soon as Cyanogen gets the source code he will cook up a fully functional ROM again, BIG UPS to Akriah for making this preview possible. =)

Once again, this is just a PREVIEW. There are NO Google apps, NO Market, NO way of installing apps... Its just so you can get a feel for the look and some of the features of 2.0 Eclair. =)

As you can see from the video, visually, some things have changed. I feel like Google makes their stuff open source to see what other people do with it, then they kinda "bite off" what is done better.
For instance, some of the new icons are very similar to HTC's skinning of Android using Sense UI. The new 2.0 also has almost the same transition animation when returning to the home screen as Hero. The same green highlights can also be found strewn about the new firmware update... Now, they are taking a lot of the features from Moto Blur and having a sort of Universal inbox and integrating a lot of social networking sites into your contacts and such.
