Samsung Sells 50 Millionth Full Touch Screen Mobile Phone

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, marked the sale of its 50 millionth full touch screen mobile phone globally this month, confirming its leadership in this fast-growing market segment.

Samsung has sold approximately 40 million full touch screen devices this year through the end of November, compared with around 10 million in 2008. The growth in sales shows the rapid adoption of full touch screen phones by mainstream consumers who enjoy the convenience of the intuitive user interface, powerful multimedia features and sleek designs.

Samsung is on track to exceed its 2009 sales target of 200 million mobile phones, with full touch models accounting for approximately 20 percent of mobiles sold. Full touch screen models made up around 5 percent of Samsung’s sales in 2008.

Samsung has advanced the widespread adoption of full touch phones over the past two years by introducing a diverse lineup of devices – from entry level to high-end - that underscore the company’s commitment to providing a phone for every lifestyle. The Star (model: S5230), a powerful multimedia mobile first introduced this May, became Samsung’s fastest selling mobile, surpassing 10 million units within six months of its launch. Other popular models include the F480, which has sold 9 million units since May 2008, and the Corby(model: S3650), a youth-focused model, which has sold 3 million units within only two months since its launch in September of this year.

“We’ve seen remarkable growth in full touch screen mobiles this year as consumers increasingly enjoy the user experience and convenience that these devices put at their finger tips,” said JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics.

“Samsung’s ability to deliver devices that appeal to a broad demographic of users has enabled us to accelerate the evolution toward full touch mobiles as mainstream devices. Samsung will continue to expand the global full touch phone market by introducing phones tailored to individual regions and user requirement with stylish designs, intuitive UIs and cutting edge features,” he said.

By region, Samsung has sold its largest share of full touch devices in Europe with 19 million units, followed by the United States (6.3 million), China (3.4 million) and South Korea (3.0 million).

In the South Korean market, Samsung has led the trend toward full touch screen phones featuring “haptic” feedback, selling 4.4 million units since the introduction of haptic devices in March of 2008. Samsung’s haptic AMOLED mobiles (models: W850, W8500, W8550), for major local mobile operators have sold 420,000 units.

France Telecom Beat Down By Economy, Suicides

France Telecom, which has seen 25 employee suicides since the beginning of 2008, expects to spend up to 1 billion euros on initiatives to ease employee tensions.

That was the word on Thursday when Europe’s third-largest telecom provider reported its third-quarter earnings. And thanks to lower customer spending, regulatory rulings and currency exchange rates, France Telecom’s profit dropped 8 percent – more than analysts expected. The numbers fell from 4.95 billion euros a year ago to 4.56 billion euros.

Still, margins stayed stable because the carrier cut down on network investments, part of the reason so many workers are distraught.

To be sure, France Telecom has been forced to halt its restructuring efforts while it negotiates with unions and tries to assuage worker fears over the formerly stated-owned operator’s more capitalistic bent.

But executives say the suicide spiral isn’t hurting France Telecom’s sales numbers. The company’s finance director told Reuters France Telecom could craft a part-time work schedule for older employees that would hurt 2009’s results but “have a positive effect on subsequent years.”

Meanwhile, France Telecom maintained its 2009 cash-flow target.

Affordability, Functionality Drive Mobile Growth in Asia

Emerging mobile functionalities include Mobile Payment, Mobile Gaming, Mobile Healthcare and Mobile Music.

Adoption of feature-rich handsets pushes mobile advertising and marketing growth

Singapore – The Mobile Marketing Association, a global organization leading the way in promoting the development and sustainability of mobile marketing, and Solidiance, Asia's premier marketing & innovation strategy consulting firm, jointly released a paper on the emerging trends in mobile communications growth in Asia. Titled ‘Asia Mobile Telecommunication Innovations,’ the whitepaper identifies functionality and affordability as the two leading factors driving mobile adoption in Asia.

Affordability has been driven not only by the availability of affordable handsets for low income consumers, but also by lower service prices resulting from highly competitive market places. China, India and Indonesia are the top three markets offering the most affordable handsets in Asia.

With regards to functionality, the market for smartphones has been growing across Asia Pacific. “Undoubtedly, the mobile device is the most personal technology in use today, a fact that presents immense potential for engagement through mobile advertising and marketing. The increase of function-rich smartphones in the market with larger screen size, better web browsing capabilities and longer battery life, combined with ‘all you can eat’ data packages is driving the growth of mobile Internet making it a ready channel to connect with customers,” said Rohit Dadwal, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Mobile Marketing Association.

The four key emerging mobile functionalities that are driving growth in Asia include mobile payment, mobile gaming, mobile healthcare and mobile music.

“Currently, Singapore and Hong Kong are the most mature electronic payment markets in Asia. The industry is growing rapidly and provides significant opportunities for all electronic payment Channels including mobile platforms. With a focus on services/product innovation, mobile operators and value added services providers are aggressively working on payment options through mobile platforms – which will be the most lucrative segment in the medium term across Asia,” said Damien Duhamel, Managing Director, Solidiance.

Revenues from mobile gaming for the Asia Pacific region have also significantly increased over the past few years. The delivery of advertising within mobile applications (games) creates a new revenue stream for publishers, distributors and service providers. More importantly, the revenue may be used to partially or completely subsidize the price of mobile games/services that the application provides.

Mobile healthcare is another fast growing segment in Asia Pacific. A recent study estimated that the Asian mobile healthcare business is currently growing at 80% year on year. In 2010, this business is estimated to be worth just under USD 1bn with 70% of users in more advanced economies. Applications include remote patient monitoring, mobile nursing, mobile medical records access, access to free mobile healthcare information etc.

“Asia Pacific is the prime testing ground for mobile healthcare. Asia is wired, adopts technologies faster than any other continents, and there are billions of dollars being pumped into the Asia healthcare industry to improve the current infrastructure,” said Mark Lee, Medtech Practice Head - Solidiance

The Asian mobile music market is also seeing rapid growth. Mobile operators in Korea have been the fastest to innovate and capture this market leading to soaring mobile music sales.

On the mobile value added services side, the Asia Pacific region has seen consistent growth in SMS usage. The Philippines remains the SMS capital of the world with the average user sending 400 SMS messages per month.

Early this year, it was estimated that over 2 billion cellphone subscriptions were active in the Asia Pacific region, which is half the global count. The high penetration of mobile devices as compared with personal computers has presented marketers with the opportunity to convert a technology product into a medium for personalized engagement.

“Increasing mobile penetration along with the introduction and adoption of newer mobile technology in the region has made it impossible to ignore the potential of the medium as a marketing vehicle. Research has shown that mobile phone users are receptive to this application of the technology and the increasing use of feature-rich phones further indicates an openness toward using the device for different applications,” Dadwal concluded.

Nokia plans just one Linux phone next year: source

The world's top cellphone maker, Nokia, plans to install Linux software on just one new smartphone next year, a source with direct knowledge of Nokia's product roadmap told Reuters.

A Nokia spokesman said the company does not comment on future product plans.

Nokia's Linux Maemo operating system is seen as a key for the top cellphone maker in its battle against Apple's iPhone, and many analysts and industry players have expected the firm to roll out numerous Linux models already next year.

Nokia started to sell its first Linux phone, the top-of-the-range model N900, this month.

The plan for just one Linux phone also dampens rumors the company would replace the Symbian operating system in its line-up.

"We remain firmly committed to Symbian as our smartphone platform of choice," the Nokia spokesman said.

Nokia will hold its capital markets day on Wednesday, an event where the firm traditionally has outlined or updated its strategy for the coming 1-2 years.

iPhone: Next generation set for summer 2010?

Are we set for a new iPhone in 2010? The rumour mill has been sent into overdrive after a developer noticed that their app had been tested on an iPhone 3,1 device in the San Francisco Bay area. The latest iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, is identified as iPhone 2,1.

Developer Pandav noticed the 3,1 device listed in analytic results from Pinch Media for their app, iBART – which sadly has nothing to do with Springfield’s favourite bad-boy, and is, in fact, a public transport app.

Although the moniker 3,1 was first noticed in firmware files back in August it’s the first time the device has been identified as being in use.

Putting our deerstalker on, it’s easy to deduce Apple’s plans. See, the first detections of the iPhone 3GS, otherwise known as iPhone 2,1 were around eight months before its launch. Eight months from now would be July 2010, which would coincide nicely with Apple’s policy of big summer releases, and an iPhone refresh roughly every 12 months.

With the iPhone being available on multiple networks in the UK now (it’s even going to be available from Tesco) it’s fair to expect some tasty offers when the new iPhone goes on sale. If you’re eyeing one up for Christmas, you may want to consider whether or not an 18-month or two-year contract is a good idea, if there’s a chance there could be a new iPhone coming out next summer.

First DivX Certified(R) LG Android Smartphone and New LG Chocolate Mobile Phone Now Available in Selected Countries

Stylish, innovative phones allow consumers to playback high-quality DivX(R) video.

SAN DIEGO and SEOUL, South Korea -- DivX, Inc. (Nasdaq: DIVX), a leading digital media company, and LG Electronics, a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, announced two new LG phones - the LG GW620, LG's first DivX® Certified Android smartphone, and the DivX Certified new LG Chocolate (LG BL40) phone. These stylish new phones give consumers a seamless, high-quality DivX® video experience on the go.

DivX technology produces highly compressed video that requires minimal storage for the highest quality media experience on a mobile platform. In fact, a standard definition movie can be compressed into just 1GB using DivX technology; a size that can easily be stored on a mobile phone for viewing anytime, anywhere.

The LG GW620 is LG's first Android-powered smartphone. Consumers can watch DivX videos on its 3-inch, 320x480 resolution touch screen. It is currently available in North America and Europe. The new LG Chocolate is the fourth handset of the LG Black Label Series. It includes a 4-inch wide screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio for a panoramic, cinema-like quality viewing experience in the high-quality DivX format. The new LG Chocolate made its official debut in the U.K. in September and is currently available throughout Europe and the Middle East. It is scheduled for full worldwide release by the end of the year.

"LG products populate the DivX ecosystem," said Kevin Hell, Chief Executive Officer, DivX, Inc. "We're pleased to deliver DivX capabilities to LG's first Android phone and the new LG Chocolate, extending a partnership that provides consumers with the freedom to watch high-quality video on any DivX Certified device, whenever and wherever they want."

"LG continues to roll out feature-rich phones and smartphones loaded with cutting-edge technologies," said Dr. Woo-Young Kwak, Executive Vice President of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company's Mobile Handset R&D Center. "LG mobile phones include support for DivX and enable customers to enjoy cinematic viewing on the go."

LG is the third largest cell phone company in the world. The LG GW620 and the new LG Chocolate phone join the LG Viewty and the LG Secret as part of the DivX ecosystem, which now includes more than 200 million DivX devices shipped into the market worldwide. With so many DivX devices available to choose from, it's simple for consumers to view their favorite videos on a DivX Certified device of their choice from a variety of manufacturers, whether it's a mobile phone, digital TV or portable DVD player.

Products that bear the DivX Certified logo have undergone a rigorous testing program to ensure a high-quality DivX media experience, including reliable video creation and playback, interoperability with other DivX Certified devices and the visual quality users expect from DivX.

Brazilian Company Offers Mobile Technology in South Africa

Soccerex'09, biggest event for soccer businesses, will bring together in Johannesburg teams and delegations from all over the world.

SAO PAULO -- Mowa Sports will be responsible for all mobile services (mobile telephony) that are to be provided during Soccerex'09, the main world event for soccer businesses being held in South Africa.

The project developed by Mowa Sports will bring content and information from this event to the mobile universe, that is, to cell phones -- ranging from the simplest devices to smartphones.

The company has created a mobile version of the website (www.soccerex.mobi) for the event -- with the scheduling of a congress, data about exhibitors and a list of the participating delegations -- and it will be performing activities with bluetooth technology (distribution of videos and newsletters) and text messaging, sending out alerts on schedules of talks, interviews, announcements and other event information.

Mowa Sports is also a sponsor of the Football Festival, a two-day festive pre-event, which will feature the participation of former professional soccer players from countries such as England, Holland and Brazil.

Soccerex combines a congress and a trade fair dedicated to soccer, held annually in the country that will be hosting the next World Cup. The 14th edition of the gathering will take place from November 30 to December 2 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"Bringing together the excitement of sports and the speed and practicality of cell phones creates lots of possibilities and opportunities," says Alfredo Correia, partner and Vice President of Mowa.

Red Bend's Mobile Software Management Client Reaches 620 Million Devices

WALTHAM, Mass.-- Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), announced that its mobile software management client, vRapid Mobile®, has shipped in 620 million mobile devices worldwide, spanning 455 device models from leading manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson, LG, Motorola, Sharp and HTC. During third quarter, Red Bend signed four new customers, including Sagem Communications, for a total of 52 licensees of its solutions for mobile software updating and device management.

Red Bend's MSM client, vRapid Mobile, is the leading solution for updating firmware over the air (FOTA) and managing software components over the air (SCOTA). Red Bend's product portfolio also includes vDirect Mobile(TM), the leading independent device management (DM) client interoperable with any server supporting standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA DM).

"Third quarter was another strong period of growth for Red Bend as market adoption of mobile software management grew to more platforms and more devices," said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software. "While analysts say overall handset shipments declined year-over-year by four to six percent, our shipments grew by 20% compared to third quarter 2008. As the mobile industry becomes more competitive, our customers trust Red Bend to help them bring innovative mobile devices, services and applications to market faster while improving the mobile user experience with new features and software improvements."

Highlights from the third quarter:

•Android Demand: Google Android's popularity is creating demand for Red Bend's cross-platform, standards-based MSM solutions. Borqs, a leading open source mobile application software provider and integrator, began shipping Red Bend's software in the HTC Dopod A6188 smartphone featuring the OPhone OS, an Android-based platform developed by Borqs for China Mobile, the world's largest wireless network operator.
•M2M in Europe: France-based Sagem Communications, a leading provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions, joined Red Bend's growing roster of M2M customers. Sagem, which has delivered more than 14 million cellular modules worldwide, will use FOTA from Red Bend to deliver new features and software improvements throughout the product lifespan.
•Technology Leadership: Red Bend was granted two more patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for revertible and failsafe features of the company's already patented in-place update methods for managing software on mobile devices. The features improve the mobile user experience and enable Red Bend's customers to reduce support costs and increase service revenues.
•Market Recognition: Independent research firm Ovum named Red Bend the leader in firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating with 64% market share. The company also was awarded second place in the 2009 Deloitte Brightman Almagor Zohar Technology Fast 50 competition for its impressive revenue growth over the past five years.
