Taiwan market: Sony Ericsson aims to ship 1.5 million handsets in 2007

Sony Ericsson on October 16 launched five new handsets, including four models supporting 3.5G technology, in Taiwan, with the company aiming to ship a total of 1.5 million handsets in Taiwan this year, according to Steve Yeh, president of Sony Ericsson Taiwan.

The company also aims to push the number of its handset shipments in Taiwan to two million units in 2008, with its market share to hover at around 30% and to catch up the current number one vendor Nokia, Yet stated.

The four 3.5G handsets launched on October 16 include the Cybershot K850i, Walkman W910i, as well as Z750i and K630i, with the K850i being the company's first model to feature a built-in 5-megapixel camera, according to company data.

Citing in-house data, Yeh claimed that global shipments of Cybershot camera handsets have surpassed 13 million units, while shipments of Walkman music handsets have exceeded 45 million units.

Despite handsome gains recorded in the high-end segment, sales of the company's entry-level models, including the J110, J120, K220 and K230, have not been strong as expected, Yeh admitted.

Sony Ericsson's forthcoming new smartphone, the W960i, which is slated for worldwide sale in December, will come equipped with touch-control functionality, Yeh indicated.
