Samsung becomes world's No. 2 handset maker
SEOUL, Jan 25, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- SSNJY news PowerRating PR Charts -- Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea's leading electronics giant, outperformed its closest rival Motorola Inc. in 2007 to become the world's No. 2 maker of mobile handsets in terms of sales, according to data released by the two companies Thursday.
Samsung Electronics reported that it sold 18.37 trillion won (US$22,.1 billion) worth of mobile handsets last year, up 22 percent from a year earlier. U.S.-based Motorola logged $19 billion in sales of handsets.
Samsung Electronics also outpaced its U.S. rival in the number of products sold. Samsung said it sold 161 million units of mobile handsets last year, while Motorola reported it sold 159 million units of cell phones.
Industry sources attributed the reversal of ranking to Samsung's better performance in sales of low- and mid-priced products along with increased revenue in emerging markets.
