Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach Teams with the GSMA Development Fund
Advanced Technology Projects Support Health Care and Education
BARCELONA, Spain — February 11, 2008 — Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, today announced a new program through its Wireless Reach™ initiative. The GSM Association (GSMA) Development Fund and Wireless Reach will work together to develop three projects using mobile broadband technology for health care and education in Egypt, the Philippines and Tanzania.
“Our Wireless Reach initiative has grown substantially over the last two years with nearly 30 projects in 19 countries,” said Shawn Covell, senior director of International Government Affairs for Qualcomm. “We are excited to announce a new and important relationship with the GSMA Development Fund. Working with such a distinguished organization, Wireless Reach will continue to create sustainable projects using 3G technology that strengthen economic and social development worldwide.”
This collaboration between Qualcomm and the GSMA Development Fund is intended to create three projects that will, for example, connect students to educational resources and medical professionals to specialists through high-speed 3G HSPA Internet services. Dedicated project managers on the ground in each of the three countries - Egypt, Tanzania and the Philippines - will work with local operators and will provide support to ensure that the projects are designed to be sustainable and bring about social, environmental and economic improvement.
“By working with Qualcomm, the GSMA Development Fund will highlight how mobile broadband is not just for high income markets, but also can play a critical role in driving social and economic development,” said Dawn Haig-Thomas, director of the GSMA Development Fund. “Together, we will deliver innovative solutions aimed at improving the quality of life for those living at the base of the social and economic pyramid.”
The GSMA Development Fund was set up in October 2005 to provide consulting support to innovative pilot projects that use mobile technology to boost social, economic and environmental welfare in developing countries. Working together with mobile operators, the Fund supports replicable and sustainable projects that have the potential to be widely deployed.
