Garmin developing PNDs to support One-segment and T-DMB, say sources

Following the March 4 launch of the nuvi 900T PND that supports DVB-H mobile television, Garmin reportedly is also developing portable navigation devices that will support One-segment mobile digital video broadcasts in Japan and the T-DMB standard used in South Korea, according to market sources in Taiwan.

While most PND makers are venturing into the DVB-T segment, Garmin decided to initially cater to the DVB-H market to differentiate itself from rivals, the sources noted.

The nuvi 900T features a bright, 4.3-inch WQVGA touch-screen display and allows users to play MP3 audio files, audio books from Audible.com and pre-loaded games, according to Garmin.

The nuvi 900T can be paired with compatible phones using Bluethooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calls, the company stated.

In other news, Garmin also recently launched new models of its 2x5-series entry-level PNDs, with some models being built with GPS chipset solutions from Taiwan-based MediaTek.

The nuvi 2x5 models are available with a 4.3- or 3.5-inch screen with an all new shaded elevation mapping display. The new models also feature 333 MHz microprocessors which greatly enhances the map drawing and routing capability, according to the company.
