Samsung beats out STMicroelectronics for Nokia 5-megapixel CMOS image sensor orders
Nokia has chosen Samsung Electronics over STMicroelectronics as an additional supplier for high-end 5-megapixel CMOS image sensors, as the South Korea vendor is ahead of STMicroelectronics in pushing the products to market, according to market sources in Taiwan.
Nokia has been buying the bulk of its entry- and mid-range CMOS image sensors from STMicroelectronics, while purchasing the high-end CMOS image sensors for its N-series camera phones from either OmniVision or Aptina, the sources indicated.
Although Nokia's initial purchase volumes of 5-megapixel CMOS image sensors from Samsung are still lower than the volumes purchased from OmniVision and Aptina, the business ties with Nokia may allow Samsung to make better inroads into the high-end CMOS image sensor segment, the sources noted.
In addition to selling the 5-megapixel CMOS image sensors to Nokia, Samsung also uses its own image controller chips on the production of its high-end camera phones, said the sources.
