Integrated GPS soon as usual as text messaging

External GPS receivers have for some years now been useful gadgets to enable positioning and navigation with your mobile phone. But more and more phone models with in-build GPS receivers are entering the market, amongst them Nokia 6110, the new Apple iPhone and the latest star from Sony Ericsson: G705.

The advantages of internal GPS receivers are eminent: You can’t loose them. You can’t leave them at home. They don’t take up any space in your pockets. No extra power re-charge needed. Easier for the handset to connect to the GPS receiver…

But even external GPS receivers like Wayfinder’s own GPS receiver have advantages: You can use them for many phone models. Mobiles without in-build GPS receiver are cheaper. You can place your receiver strategically for a better satellite connection. The GPS receiver doesn’t take out the juice of your phone…

ABI Research is predicting that there will ship more than 550 million GPS-enabled handsets by 2012.

Right now phone manufacturers are working to make phones with integrated GPS receivers even more attractive: Lower prices. Further reducing the power consumption. Better and faster satellite fix, especially indoors. Higher accuracy.

ABI Research is predicting that there will ship more than 550 million GPS-enabled handsets by 2012. So if you already have a Nokia 6110, a BlackBerry Bold 9000, a Samsung Omnia i900 or a Motorola Moto Q, you are already on the right track. If not, you know what’s expecting you.

Navigation as a “main” or an “add”?
If we take a brief look at today’s handsets with integrated GPS receivers, we see two trends: Some phones like the Nokia 6110 Navigator or the Sony Ericsson W760 Walkman have navigation as one of their main features. A big screen is always welcome when navigating. Even a stable shell for outdoor handling is needed.

Other phones like Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-shot are fully equipped for navigation but use the GPS to add some spice to other features, e.g. to geotag photos.

But using GPS phones for turn-by-turn navigation and finding points-of-interest along your way with Wayfinder Navigator, sharing your location with friends and colleagues on Facebook with Wayfinder LocateMate, recording your outdoor sporting sessions with Wayfinder Active, or receiving speed alerts and speed camera warning with Wayfinder SpeedAlert are only the beginning.
