Taiwan market: Carrefour becomes mobile service operator
Carrefour, Taiwan's largest hypermarket chain, on October 29 announced the launch of a mobile communication service under its own brand through partnership with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT). Carrefour will use CHT's 2G infrastructure to becoming the fourth MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) in Taiwan.
Carrefour has set up a subsidiary, Carrefour Telecom, to specifically operate the mobile communication service, Carrefour indicated. The service will be available in two methods: pre-paid cards and at a fixed monthly fee of NT$99 (US$3). Call charge rates are NT$0.11/sec and NT$0.115/sec, respectively, for voice calls to intra-network and extra-network mobile phone numbers and fixed-line telephone numbers in Taiwan, Carrefour pointed out.
For Carrefour, MVNO business operation is expected to bring in non-operating income and build an innovative corporate image, the company explained. All of Carrefour's 55 chain stores around Taiwan will make up the network of retail outlets for the MVNO business operation, Carrefour pointed out.
Taiwan's three existing MVNOs are Arcoa, a telecommunication devices and consumer electronics retail chain, 7-Eleven, and Aurora Telecom. Of which the first two cooperate with Far EasTone Telecommunications' (FET's) to use its network and the other uses Vibo Telecom's.
