Motorola DSL CPE to Support Public Key Infrastructure
Secure digital certificate capability provides automatic authentication, simple provisioning and enhanced remote management control to help accelerate the delivery of personal media experiences
ALAMEDA, CA. – November 6, 2008 – Motorola (NYSE:MOT) today announced that its digital subscriber line (DSL) customer premises equipment (CPE) now support secure digital certificates to work with public key infrastructure (PKI), a framework for creating a secure method for exchanging information based on public key cryptography. This advantage enables automatic authentication of a CPE’s “digital signature” for carriers who support PKI digital certificates, ultimately giving end users a plug-and-play experience.
“Deploying highly reliable and standards-based security solutions is a key component across the entire portfolio of Motorola’s Netopia® xDSL CPE,” said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager, Broadband Solutions Group, Motorola, Inc. “Embedding secure digital certificates in our full xDSL platform solution increases the overall security of our customers’ xDSL services and improves their ability to minimize service problems related to incompatible devices being connected to their network.”
With PKI functionality, the end user no longer has to enter user names and passwords to provide proof that they can join a network. Behind-the-scenes authentication occurs automatically for an easy, transparent installation. Using 802.1x to auto-authenticate eliminates the need for PPPoE (point-to-point protocol over Ethernet). Also, only authorized devices are allowed to be connected to the network. With this added layer of functionality, the service provider can allow only those devices that they can remotely manage, cutting down on customer service calls and related expenses.
PKI capabilities are now part of Motorola’s full Netopia xDSL CPE portfolio, which includes gateways, modems and routers. Motorola’s CPE, backed by PKI and the NBBS device management platform, eliminate convoluted end user installation processes and enable easy provisioning as well as scalable DSL deployments for service providers. Motorola’s full Netopia xDSL CPE portfolio with PKI support is now available globally.
Earlier this year, the Motorola PKI Center passed a rigorous audit process of its digital security certificate generation system. Click here to read more.
