Project Capuchin evolution includes Symbian Foundation
At the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, UK, Sony Ericsson announced the intention of making future Symbian Foundation-based phones Project Capuchin enabled. This is part of the continued evolution of our Project Capuchin bridging technology and to make Project Capuchin more widely available in a shared and collaborative manner.
Sony Ericsson's Project Capuchin technology is a Java™ ME API that defines a bridge between the Java ME and Adobe® Flash Lite™ programming environments and is currently available for mobile phones that are largely developed on Java ME with Flash Lite on board.

In order to spread the use of Project Capuchin technology, Sony Ericsson announced the intention to develop another set of Project Capuchin tools for Symbian Foundation-based phones at the Symbian Smartphone Show (October 21-22, 2008 in London, UK).
In his keynote presentation, Patrik Olsson, Head of Software at Sony Ericsson, illustrated the possibilities of Project Capuchin by showcasing some of innovative applications where Flash Lite uses the intelligence from Java applications.
It is Sony Ericsson’s intention to make Project Capuchin more widely available in a shared and collaborative manner to the industry. The terms and conditions under which Project Capuchin will be made available is still work in progress.
Symbian Foundation and future Sony Ericsson phones
Sony Ericsson fully supports the creation of the Symbian Foundation and is one of the organization's founding members. Sony Ericsson strongly believes in the benefits of open source as a means of developing software for mobile phones and driving innovation.
Sony Ericsson will base phones on the upcoming Symbian Foundation platform in the future but as the Symbian Foundation is not a reality yet, we suggest you use the Symbian/S60 5th edition SDK for application development as this will be compatible with the upcoming Symbian Foundation platform.
About Project Capuchin
You can start developing Project Capuchin applications today for Sony Ericsson’s Java ME based phones using existing Docs & Tools.
Sony Ericsson's Project Capuchin SDK is a set of APIs, a packaging tool, documents and getting-started tutorials that enables developers to bridge the Java ME and Adobe Flash Lite programming environments and is available for download from the dedicated Project Capuchin Docs & Tools web section.
The Project Capuchin API and the Swf2Jar tool make it possible to use Flash Lite as the presentation layer and Java ME as the application logic, meaning that Flash tools can be used for UI design while still having access to all the phone services available to Java ME.
