The new energy-efficient chip DOCOMO to support demodulation and decoding MIMO signals

Japan's largest 3G mobile operator NTT DOCOMO today announced the successful development of a prototype their chips, consume less than 0.04 W and supports demodulation and decoding MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) signals. This allows the chip to achieve in descending channel data transmission at speeds up to 100 Mbps. Which is recommended for the future of mobile networks, known as the standard Super3G or LTE (Long Term Evolution) and the Consortium 3GPP. It states the operator, compared with the current generation of chips used in mobile phones DOCOMO supporting HSDPA, and can download data at speeds up to 7.2 Mbps., New permits to do so in more than 10 times faster.

In September last year DOCOMO has already demonstrated a chip, which reached a data transfer speed of 200 Mbps., While consuming less than 0.1 Watts. This chip is used demodulation and the allocation of part of MIMO OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing - multiplexing with orthogonal frequency division of signals) signal transmitted in the frequency spectrum, with the width of 20 MHz, using four antennas. Handling same signal was based on technology MLD (maximum likelihood detection - detector, which works on maximum likelihood), which ensures a relatively high quality even in bad conditions for receiving the signal. In addition, the chip includes the technology to correct errors decoding, which requires almost the same level of complexity, and decoding MIMO signal.

The new chip, which is based on 65-nm process technology, have been further optimized the internal circuit, which in particular have been removed duplicate chain for the processing of complex processes such as MIMO signal demodulation and decoding error correction.

DOCOMO announced his intention to introduce technology applied in the chip in ongoing research and development of LTE and IMT-Advanced systems.
