Sprint Nextel to set up WiMAX IOT lab in Taiwan

The Taiwan government and Sprint Nextel have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), under which the US WiMAX operator will set up an interoperability testing (IOT) lab in Taiwan to facilitate testing and certification of WiMAX products.

Since the majority of the global WiMAX CPE (customer premise equipment) products come from Taiwan makers, the establishment of the IOT lab will help Taiwan makers reduce their related testing costs, said Teresa Kellett, director of global development, Sprint Nextel.

Following the launch of WiMAX wireless Internet access in Baltimore in late September, Sprint Nextel has also launched a number of WiMAX CPE products, including modems, USB dongles, Express card adapters and seven notebooks with WiMAX modules, Kellett noted.

Sprint Nextel plans to expand its range of WiMAX enabled notebooks to 25-40 in the first quarter of 2009, with plans to also launch WiMAX handsets in the near future.

Sprint Nextel expects the number of WiMAX subscribers in the US to top 60 million in 2009 and further expand to 120 million in 2010, Kellett indicated.

In other news, Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) estimates that shipments of WiMAX CPE products by Taiwan makers are likely to top five million units in 2009 compared to one million units shipped in 2008.
