Motorola Provides WiMAX Devices, Infrastructure for Clear™ 4G Mobile Internet Service in Portland

Congratulates Clearwire on Launch of Clear™

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) congratulates Clearwire on the inaugural launch of its 4G mobile WiMAX service in Portland. The official start of Clear™ mobile Internet service was marked with a press conference and live demonstrations in downtown Portland.

“The launch of commercial mobile WiMAX service in another major U.S. metropolitan city is an exciting day for Portland, but also for our customer as they begin delivering 4G broadband service to customers in the first of many markets,” said Fred Wright, Motorola senior vice president, Home & Networks Mobility. “With Motorola’s network equipment and devices, Clearwire can offer its customers unprecedented mobile broadband service.”

“Portland is now the fastest unwired city in the West,” said Scott Richardson, Clearwire chief strategy officer. “With Clear, consumers and businesses throughout Portland can stay connected, at true broadband speeds, at home, in the office or on the go. With Motorola’s exciting mobile WiMAX devices, Clear will transform the mobile computing landscape by offering a simple value proposition aimed at improving customers’ productivity and making their lives more enjoyable.“

Motorola’s WiMAX Infrastructure and Award-Winning Devices

Clear service in Portland is delivered on Motorola’s WiMAX infrastructure and with Motorola’s award-winning USBw 100 adaptor and its CPEi 150. Both devices enable Clear customers to stay connected from their laptops while on the go or to enjoy high-speed broadband access in their homes or offices.

The CPEi 150 features one data port, supports remote management and operates in the 2.5GHz band. As a true plug-and-play device, the CPEi 150 automatically connects to the WiMAX network and authenticates itself for easy setup. An intuitive graphical interface also lets users troubleshoot and personalize their services. The USBw 100 thumb-drive-sized device plugs directly into laptop computers to provide mobile and nomadic wireless broadband connectivity, both indoors and out.

Compact Cell Site Configuration Offers WiMAX Capacity and Performance

The Greater Portland area is served by cell sites that utilize Motorola's WAP450 Diversity Access Point product. The WAP450 utilizes a tower top power amplifier and base control unit housed in a small outdoor cabinet linked with fiber optic cable creating a very compact cell site configuration significantly smaller than traditional cellular infrastructure products that offer only a fraction of the capacity and performance available with WiMAX technology.

Global Expansion of Mobile WiMAX

Prior to launching Clear mobile WiMAX service in Baltimore and Portland, Clearwire’s pre-WiMAX customers have been enjoying wireless broadband access in 46 markets throughout the U.S. using Motorola’s Expedience devices and infrastructure. Clearwire is among the 25 WiMAX contracts Motorola has with operators worldwide.
