WinHEC 2008: Quanta's brand dream comes alive in Syspine VoIP phone system

Quanta Computer's own brand Syspine VoIP phone system has won a WinHEC 2008 award in the industrial design category. Quanta and Microsoft spent three years developing this IP telephony system which aims at small-scaled companies with up to 50 people.

As the concept of its hardware design focuses on the needs of small business, the system provides an all-in-one solution with built-in security gateway, wireless router and traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) module to save office space. Its non-fan design is for reducing noise as well as issues that may be brought by the fans. Its functions fits in with the idea of B2B.

The main box of the system can be laid flat, put in an upright position, or hung on the wall, with an adjustable information display screen. The lid on the top of the body can also be flipped 90 degrees to offer better ventilation. It has a trapezoid casing with shiny colors of white and gray that may go well with the interior of many offices.

Although Quanta is an OEM company, one of the judges – design director of Duck Image Duck Hsieh – said the VoIP phone system has reached the level of products offered by brand-name vendors. He noted that Quanta designed the system totally by itself – from the conception of the idea to each and every detail.

The VoIP phone system is an enterprise product, but its design does not limit itself to functionality and realiability only. Its design comes close to consumer electirons, Hsieh noted.

But Hsieh pointed out that the telephone set coming with the system is not as design-conscious as the main body, saying the entire system lacks a product image or product identity, which is something that Quanta may want to improve in future product development.

The Syspine digital operator phone system is available in the US and Canada with English interface only. The Chinese version will be launched in the second half of 2009.
