MediaTek to ship its first Windows Mobile smartphone solutions in 2H09, says paper
MediaTek will begin shipments of its first smartphone platform solutions supporting Windows Mobile in the second half of 2009, and is expected to help increase Microsoft's share in China handset market, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
While MediaTek is expected to expand its smartphone market, its gross margin may be affected because the cost of Windows Mobile is included in the price of the platform, investors noted.
Consumers will be able to buy a smartphone for only 1,000-2,000 RMB (US$146-292) after MediaTek's products go into mass production, the report added.
