Taiwan market: Vibo Telecom sets 3G subscriber goal at 1.5 million for 2009
Vibo Telecom, one of the five operators of 3G mobile communication service in Taiwan, sets a goal of increasing the number of its subscribers to 1.5 million for this year so that its monthly EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization) can swing back to positive in December 2009, according to company chairman Rock Hsu.
Vibo expects the number of subscribers to reach 900,000 in late February or early March and one million in April 2009, Hsu indicated.
Vibo recorded consolidated revenues of NT$5.9-6 billion (US$180-183 million) and suffered a net loss of NT$5 billion in 2008, Hsu noted. This year, consolidated revenues are expected to increase to NT$10 billion but overall it will still see losses of NT$3 billion for 2009, Hsu pointed out.
Vibo launched 3G mobile Internet-access service based on notebook PCs in October 2008 and has attained 25,000 subscribers for a market share of 10% currently, according to the company. The total number of 3G mobile Internet-access subscribers in Taiwan will rise to 500,000-650,000 by the end of 2009, and Vibo expects its user base to grow to 100,000, the company noted.
