Major China handset design houses profitable in 2008

Three major China-based handset solution providers, TechFaith Wireless, SIM Technology and Longcheer Group, have all posted profits for 2008, according to financial reports released by the companies.

TechFaith managed to swing back to a profit of US$8 million, or US$0.18 per share, last year, from a loss of US$3.3 million, or US$0.08 per share, in 2007, the company said.

For all of 2008, TechFaith also saw its revenues climb 45.6% to US$208.9 million, the company added.

The Hong Kong-listed SIM snapped up net profits of HK$144 million (US$18.56 million), or HK$0.095 per share, in 2008, company data showed. However, the 2008 earnings represented a decline of 40.3% from a year earlier.

SIM's gross margin stood at 12.84% in 2008, a drop of 1.33 percentage points from 2007.

Longcheer has posted a net profit of 121 million yuan (US$17.7 million) for the first half of fiscal 2009 (from July-December 2008), although the amount was down 36% from a year earlier period, according to the company.
