MediaTek enters development of Windows Mobile-enabled chipset solutions for smartphones, say sources

Microsoft has teamed up with Taiwan-based IC design house MediaTek to develop Windows Mobile-enabled chipset solutions for smartphones, aiming to push 3G handsets built with MediaTek's solutions to the market in the third quarter at the earliest, according to market sources.

MediaTek's strong market presence in China, in particular the white-box handset market, will help boost the global market share of Windows phones, the sources indicated.

Global shipments of Windows Mobile-based handsets totaled 16.5 million units in 2008, accounting for a 11.8% share, down from 12% in 2007, according to recent data released by Gartner.
