Nokia S60 Software Update – keeping your device up-to-date

Mobile World Congress 2009, Barcelona, Spain. During this year’s MWC event in Barcelona, Nokia demonstrated a new way to provide the latest features over the air to S60 devices. The product demonstration was held at the Symbian Foundation stand and drew a large audience comprised of interested end users, device manufacturers, and operators.

Software Update for S60 is a commercial service provided by Nokia which can be used to deliver individual software components over the air. By providing the latest updates instead of the complete bundled firmware, this service can operate at Internet clock speed and offer users new features faster. When using Software Update for S60, the delivered software has no impact on the pre-installed software stored in ROM/Firmware. Should the user wish to restore an older software version after the update download and installation, the new software can be uninstalled using the device’s application manager.

The Software Update for S60 demonstration in Barcelona received positive feedback, particularly for the service’s ease of use and simple yet comprehensive functionality. Software updates can be initiated either directly from the client (pictured below), or during application usage (e.g. Maps). When opening the Software Update client, only new updates are shown to the user. They can select to download either one update or multiple updates together. While using an individual application such as Maps, new updates are proactively prompted to the user without the need to discover them via the client. Should the user reject the update at that time, the new software version will still be visible using the client.

Software Update for S60 fast facts:
•Software Update was first introduced for the Nokia N79 and N85 devices in 2008
•All new Nokia devices starting from S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 support it
•The Software Update client offers a user interface for both firmware and application updates
•Log information is available to show the user’s update history
•Users can define updates to take place within their home network only
•The client is free of charge for users

The Software Update client is now available to all S60 licensees. To enable easier adoption of the same model, Nokia has decided to offer a reference model of its solution to Symbian Foundation members later in 2Q09. Hence, other device manufacturers that are S60 licensees will also have the opportunity to keep their customers happy by continually updating devices with the latest software and applications.
