Nagravision to enter Taiwan cable TV market
Nagravision, a Switzerland-based provider of access control and content protection solutions, will team up with three Taiwan-based cable TV MSOs (multi-system operators) China Network Systems (CNS), kbro and Taiwan Broadband Communications (TBC) to explore the digital TV market in Taiwan, according to Nagravision.
Citing data from market research firms, Nagravision indicated that the number of cable TV subscribers worldwide will reach 67.9 million in 2009 and further increase to 126 million in 2012, with Asia being the most important growth area.
In the mean time, the launch of digital TV services by MSOs is likely to spark demand for over 10 million set-top boxes (STBs) in the Taiwan market in the next five years, according to an estimate by STB maker Advanced Digital Broadcast Holdings (ADB Group).
TBC plans to invest NT$3.5 billion (US$103.6 million) to develop its cable TV business over the next three years. TBC plans to purchase about 30,000-40,000 STBs in 2009, according to company sources.
CNS and kbro also plan to release STB orders for 2009 soon, with market sources indicating that both companies are likely to place STB orders with Taiwan-based Prime Electronics & Satellitics (PESI).
