U-verse TV Starts 2009 With Record Quarter
Total Advanced TV Subscribers Top 3.5 Million, Driven by Record U-verse TV Net Adds
AT&T* reported a record 284,000 AT&T U-verseSM TV subscriber net additions in the first quarter to drive the U-verse TV subscriber total above 1.3 million, and the number of subscribers to AT&T Advanced TV services – which includes bundled satellite TV services – to more than 3.5 million.
Customer demand is growing as AT&T expands availability and introduces service enhancements. U-verse TV is now available in 93 markets across 19 states. The AT&T U-verse fiber network passes nearly 18 million living units.
Nearly 50 percent of AT&T U-verse TV subscribers take one of the two largest video packages. More than 90 percent of U-verse TV customers bundle with High Speed Internet. More than 75 percent of U-verse TV customers have a triple- or quad-play. U-verse Voice services are now available in 80 markets.
AT&T recently expanded its U-verse triple-play $30-$30-$30 promotional offer to all U-verse TV markets. The offer includes U-verse TV, U-verse High Speed Internet and U-verse Voice Unlimited for $30 for each service for 12 months. It is available to all new AT&T U-verse customers ordering online.
AT&T also offers AT&T | DIRECTV service bundles in the parts of its 22-state residential service area where U-verse TV is not yet available. The Feb. 1 addition of AT&T | DIRECTV to the AT&T Advanced TV portfolio brought a new TV choice to millions of consumers as part of a bundle with AT&T wireless, broadband and voice services.
“We’re focused on delivering a better experience than cable,” said Jeff Weber, vice president of video services, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Our accelerated customer growth shows that the demand for a high-quality TV service with value-added features and integrated services remains high even in challenging economic times.”
The record in U-verse TV subscriber additions came in the first full quarter that Total Home DVR service was available in all U-verse TV markets. The service is available in most U-verse TV packages at no extra charge. AT&T also made several service enhancements in the quarter, including:
100 or more U-verse TV High Definition (HD) channels — exceeding the HD channel lineups offered by the local cable providers in every U-verse TV market.
Expanded U-verse TV international programming options for Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and Korean viewers and a new U200 Latino package.
College Basketball from Yahoo! Sports, an interactive application that allowed sports fans to view tournament brackets, their personalized completed bracket, game summaries and box scores, and video clips of game analysis and commentary from the AT&T U-bar on their U-verse TV screen.
2009 Masters application, which featured an up to date Leaderboard, player scorecards, stats and bios, news updates, tournament photos, video archives and a mosaic of multiple channels showing live Masters content at once.
Weather On Demand, an interactive application that allows U-verse TV customers to find the local and national weather information they want, in the city they want, at the time they want — all at the touch of a button.
In January, U-verse TV and DIRECTV were the first video service providers to receive certification for their set-top boxes under the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program for video providers. All deployed U-verse TV receivers exceed the efficiency requirements.
