Foundries to see reduced orders for communications chips in 3Q09
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) will see single-digit decreases in orders from the communications sector for the third quarter, as clients such as Broadcom, Marvell and MediaTek have turned more cautious about demand in the fourth quarter because of seasonality, according to sources from semiconductor equipment makers.
Communications chip clients increased their orders for TSMC and UMC in the second quarter due to strong demand from the China market, but the foundries' current order visibility for the third quarter indicates that there will be a decline in demand, indicated the sources.
A Chinese-language Commercial Times report cited industry sources as indicating that MediaTek has cut orders for TSMC and UMC substantially compared to the volume earlier this quarter, as demand in emerging markets is expected to slow down after peaking in the third quarter.
