Development Guidelines
Now if you're on this website, it is also because you are interested in developing a new sort of Android Applications. We believe in the future, and we are convinced that the future is about High-End Android devices. Every applications developed on Android will work on an Android device, with the limitation of SDK extended compatibility of course.
But if you want to develop specifically for new high-end device, you may want to follow a few guidelines. By High-End devices, we mean devices that are not only smartphones, but all kind of tablets, PDA, PNDs or picture-frames. Device s that will tomorrow provide the same kind of experience than a PC, mobility added.
AppsLib is a co-venture with ARCHOS. Our target is to be available on a large variety of device, from a lot of manufacturer. But we believe ARCHOS has got what it takes to become the future of Android devices. If you want to develop on a new generation of product, you should consider the following suggestions.
1. Large Screen
(800x480 pixel in Landscape mode, or 480x800 in portrait mode)
ARCHOS is using a 5'' screen in WVGA resolution. Most Android devices are using only QVGA - 320x240 resolution screen. You can immediately see that this framework will let you provide so much more to your end-users. Larger screen, bigger button, more information. All your apps can be redesigned to provide a lot more than what the smartphones let you do today.
Now you will want to make sure that you deduct a little bit of the screen for the TOP menu to appear, and reserve 48pixels for it. Click on the image for clarifications. Same is true for the Portrait mode of course.
2. 720p Resolution
Using an Android application on a W-VGA screen is one thing. Now imaging doing this on an HD-TV. With the ARCHOS tablet, this is possible.
Not only do they have HDMI outputs, but natively play 720p resolution (1160x652 to be more specific). This is a totally new dimension you can open your applications to. Using them with a TV Remote control or a simple USB mouse will become completely natural. ARCHOS will let you enter the TV world with the new ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet. This is no longer limited to small smartphones.
Imagine you are developing a Movie application that shows the trailers for next releases. Isn't it great that people will discover them on their HD TV rather than on a small phone?
3. OpenGL accelerator
ARCHOS tablets are natively embedding OpenGL libraries. That means that 3D animated application can be developed and opened directly in an OpenGL window on the ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet. You want to create a 3D maps to play on an ARCHOS? You can. Browse the Audio library is a complete new way? You can. Provide an animated game leveraging the accelerometer capabilities? You can.
ARCHOS is currently using Software accelerator; the hardware accelerator capabilities will follow very soon after product launch. So you can start today, your apps will use the full power in october.
