China Mobile to spend more than 120 billion yuan for TD-SCDMA CPE products, says chairman
China Mobile will invest 120 billion yuan (US$17.57 billion) to build up its TD-SCDMA networks in the next three years, and the company will spend even more on purchasing TD-SCDMA CPE products, company chairman Wang Jianzhou said in Taipei recently.
A lack of TD-SCDMA CPE devices is currently the most critical challenge for China Mobile but a great opportunity for Taiwan-based CPE vendors, said Wang, who will wind up his current 9-day visit to Taiwan at the end of this month.
In order to facilitate the establishment of a TD-SCDMA supply chain, Wang has signed a TD-SCDMA handset partnership MOU with HTC (High Tech Computer) and discussed with Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) for the production of e-book readers.
Wang is also scheduled to visit MediaTek for cooperation in TD-SCDMA chipset solutions, and will call on Acer and Asustek Computer for more diversified CPE supplies such as netbooks and notebooks.
As of the end of June 2009, there were only 50 TD-SCDMA CPE items available in the market, with total sales reaching one million units, Wang noted.
China Mobile is looking to increase the number of CPE products to 200 and also aims to bring down the prices of TD-SCDMA enabled handsets to the 1,000 yuan level, Wang indicated.
