Chunghwa Telecom uses backup routes after CUCN submarine cable outage

The China-US Cable Network (CUCN) submarine cable used by Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) broke down on August 13, affecting outbound voice communications from Taiwan to China and the US. But CHT said it has resumed normal services by arranging interconnection of its backup routes with other undersea cable systems linking to Japan and the US.

The backup routes are Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) and the north legs of APCN and APCN2, CHT said.

In addition, parts of SMW3, APCN, APCN2, EAC, C2C and FNAL/RNAL submarine cable lines broke down during August 9-12 in the wake of Typhoon Morakot, CHT said.

While the damage hampered Internet connection and voice/data communications between Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries, CHT has received support from telecom carriers in China and other countries as well as operators of undersea cable lines to minimize the impact, CHT said. The fixing of these damaged submarine cable lines will take one to two months, CHT noted.
