Taiwan market: Taiwan Mobile launches Samsung Android-powered i7500 smartphone

Taiwan-based carrier Taiwan Mobile has launched Samsung's Android-powered i7500 smartphone in the Taiwan market.

Including HTC's Windows Mobile-based smartphones and RIM's BlackBerry Storm, Taiwan Mobile aims to sell 100,000 smartphones in the Taiwan market in 2009 compared to 60,000 units in 2008, according to Cliff Lai, COO of consumer business group at Taiwan Mobile.

However, Lai said that he believes Android-powered handsets will be the fastest growing platform in the smartphone segment in the next five years.

Meanwhile, HS Kim, general manager of Samsung Taiwan, predicted global sales of Android-based handsets are likely to reach 7.5 million units in 2009, up from 750,000 units shipped in 2008.

The launch of i7500 comes ahead of the iPhone 3GS by Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) which is scheduled for the end of August.
