AT&T Boosts 3G Coverage for Customers Throughout Greater Louisville and Surrounding Communities

3G Technology Added to 33 Cell Sites Improving Quality and Broadband-Speed Access.

Customers wanting faster wireless data speeds are now enjoying the benefits of AT&T’s* latest 3G expansions throughout greater Louisville and surrounding communities. AT&T has added third-generation (3G) wireless technology to 33 cell sites recently. The added capacity in more areas makes it possible for customers to take advantage of high-speed data services and cutting-edge devices like smartphones and netbooks.

The network expansion is part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive innovation and investment to deliver the benefits of smartphones and mobile broadband for customers. More smartphone customers have chosen AT&T over any other U.S. competitor, and AT&T is committed to driving continual enhancement of network capabilities to meet these customers’ ever-growing mobile broadband needs.

AT&T’s recently expanded 3G network upgrades work to improve quality and coverage for those traveling in the following areas: Buckner, Crestwood, Elizabethtown, Galena, Ind., Goshen, Hillview, LaGrange, Louisville, Radcliff, Shepherdsville, Vine Grove and Mt. Washington.

AT&T’s network expansion plans also included deploying new OC-192 fiber optic technology to provide additional interconnection backhaul diversity across the state of Kentucky. This improvement provides additional redundancy and resiliency to the network.

“Our goal is to add 3G service in new areas throughout Louisville and to boost network capacity where we already have this technology in place,” said Jim Thorpe, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets in Tennessee and Kentucky. “With this expansion, our customers can continue to ride the leading edge of mobile broadband with emerging devices and thousands of mobile applications.”

Customers using an AT&T 3G device can download a game, video, song, or ringtone or access e-mail faster than with a 2G network.

“The AT&T 3G network opens the door to a new era of advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content,” said Mary Pat Regan, president, AT&T Kentucky. “I am proud of the enhancements we have made and we will continue to make significant investments throughout the state to deliver dependable, high speed wireless access in more places for our customers.”

From 2006 to 2008, AT&T’s total capital investment in its wireline and wireless networks in Kentucky was more than $525 million. In 2009, AT&T plans to invest between $17 billion and $18 billion to enhance its wired and wireless networks. The investment in its 3G wireless broadband network is part of AT&T’s ongoing effort to build the broadband networks – both wireless and wired - that will create jobs and fuel economic growth and enable its customers to access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.

AT&T matches its network investment with unsurpassed choice in the range of devices, services and applications compatible with its 3G network – the nation’s fastest, according to independent testing. AT&T offers a wide variety of devices from more than a dozen manufacturers, including handsets that are compatible with six different operating systems and five different e-mail applications. Our Media Mall 2.0 offers more than 90,000 content options, and customers can download additional applications over the Internet. Additionally, AT&T supports a community of more than 20,000 application developers via its devCentral portal.

Recently, AT&T announced plans to further upgrade its 3G network nationwide with HSPA 7.2 technology to deliver considerably faster mobile broadband speeds. The upgrades are planned to begin in the fourth quarter, with completion expected in 2011. Supporting this initiative is AT&T’s ongoing deployment of additional backhaul capacity to cell sites, which will support today’s unprecedented growth in mobile data traffic as well as the future demands of next-generation networks.

AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T’s 3G network is available in more than 350 major metropolitan areas. AT&T also offers 3G data roaming in more than 100 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 215 countries.
