Taiwan market: Sony Ericsson to heat up competition for handset market share in 4Q09
Competition for market share in the Taiwan handset market will heat up again in the last quarter of 2009 as most vendors, especially Sony Ericsson, are gearing to launch new models, according to sources at Taiwan retail channels.
Sony Ericsson plans to launch four models in October – the high-end, touch-enabled Satio U1 and Aino U10, gaming handset Yari U100 and clamshell form factor Jalou F100, the sources noted.
With the launch of the new models, second-ranked Sony Ericsson will try to unseat Nokia from the top ranking position while widening its market gap against the third-ranked vendor Samsung Electronics, the sources commented.
In August, Sony Ericsson led Samsung Electronics with a margin of only 1.5pp in terms of unit sales, while lagging Nokia with 3pp in terms of sales value, said the sources citing channel data.
Fending the aggressive marketing campaigns waged by Sony Ericsson, Samsung will launch the entry-level, touch-enabled Corby S3650 targeting the young consumer group, the sources revealed.
Meanwhile, Motorola also plans to launch four new handsets, the WX180, 280, 390 and 395 in October, while LG Electronics (LGE) will introduce its BL40 and BL20 in November, the source noted.
