FIH to consolidate handset R&D units within Foxconn Group
Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) plans to consolidate a total of eight handset R&D units belonging to member companies within the Foxconn Group, including Foxconn Electronics, FIH, Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS) and Mobinnova, according to industry sources.
Calvin Chih, managing director of FIH, has been assigned to implement the consolidation process, said the sources. Chih had previously served as president of CMCS before he was appointed to the present post at the end of August 2009.
The eight R&D units had previously worked with Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, separately, the sources noted.
Meanwhile, FIH will shift its strategy to focus on the development of Windows Mobile- and Android-based smartphones utilizing 3G chipset solutions from Qualcomm and ST-Ericsson, the sources added.
FIH is also expected to gradually shun away from the feature phone segment due to sharp declines in handset orders from Nokia and Motorola in the past two years, the sources asserted.
