Sony Ericsson kicks off first online flash mob

Sony Ericsson has partnered with Yahoo to launch what it’s claiming is the UK’s first online flashmob.

At 3pm on Thursday the Yahoo portal will see thousands of user-created Space Hoppers jump out of a Sony Ericsson MPU and move across the page.

People have designed more than 27,000 Space Hoppers on a designated campaign site, HopperInvasion.com, in the lead-up to tomorrow’s event.

The flashmob is part of a wider campaign to support the launch of Sony Ericsson’s Satio and Aino handsets.

Dave Hilton, Sony Ericsson UK and Ireland marketing director, said nearly 200,000 people visited the HopperInvasion site, with the UK accounting for 60% of total traffic.

Hilton said, “This is exactly the level of consumer engagement that we strive for at Sony Ericsson by offering experiences that are distinct and exciting. This is a strong signal that our brand realignment and positioning as the communication entertainment company is a solid one.”

The campaign was created by digital agency Dare with media planning/buying by agency MEC.
