Qualcomm CEO: AT&T To Launch First Smartbook

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- AT&T Inc. (T) will sell the first smartbook using Qualcomm Inc.'s (QCOM) Snapdragon chip, according to Qualcomm Chief Executive Paul Jacobs.

Jacobs, speaking at the company's investor day conference, unveiled the product, which is made by Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992.HK).

Qualcomm has been at the forefront of pushing a "tweener" category of smartbooks, which merge the low-power needs and always-on capabilities of the smartphone with the larger display of a netbook.

Indeed, the Lenovo device looks much like a thin notebook. Few additional details were given, since it gets officially unveiled early next year at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Qualcomm hopes its Snapdragon chip can straddle that line and fit in multiple products. The chip is already found in smartphones. The chip not only has a processor, but can connect to the cellular network.

AT&T, like the other carriers, has been more open to selling non-cellphone devices like laptop cards and netbooks because it hopes to bundle service contracts with them.

Jacobs said the carriers will be more willing to experiment with different data services next year. Traditional voice revenue is slowing, as is former growth engine text messages, pushing the need for new services.
