Opera Mini shortlisted for two GSMA awards:

Winners announced during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Opera Software announced that the world’s most popular mobile Web browser, Opera Mini, has been shortlisted for two GSMA Global Mobile Awards. The GSMA represents the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry, and each February, it hosts the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

Opera Mini is a contender for “Best Mobile Internet Service” and “Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough”. The winners of the Global Mobile Awards will be announced during the MWC, on Tuesday, February 16, at 3:45 p.m. (Hall 5, level 3, auditorium 1). The awards presentation will be hosted by British writer, actor and technophile Stephen Fry.

“Our congratulations to all nominees for the Global Mobile Awards 2010,” said Rob Conway, CEO and Member of the Board of the GSMA. “Competition for these awards is fierce, with more than 500 entries - including many of an exceptional standard - and a highly discerning independent judging panel to impress; to be shortlisted is quite an achievement. We look forward to the unveiling of the winners at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.”

Opera Software submitted its Opera Mini mobile-Web browser to the Global Mobile Awards committee, due to its unique worldwide success. The browser is free and fast, which has catapulted its popularity on nearly any Java-based mobile phone, no matter the platform, brand or capabilities of the handset. As a result, millions more people are now surfing, sharing and communicating via the Internet.

“It is an honor for Opera to be recognized by the GSMA for Opera Mini’s outstanding achievements,” said Christen Krogh, Chief Development Officer, Opera Software. “We believe that Opera Mini is a strong contender for these awards, as it represents a significant breakthrough in terms of mobile Web surfing. It is simple, secure, speedy, and it is already loved by more than 41 million people worldwide.”
