New lease of life
Janne Eriksson is a 42 year old Sawmill worker who lives with his wife Magdalena and five year old son, Ludvig just outside the city of Hudiksvall in Sweden. Since settling in the area 20 years ago, he has seen his communications options change and grow, most recently due to the evolution from dial-up internet to a host of high-speed broadband offerings.
Today, Janne subscribes to a home broadband package which includes the internet, IP telephone, IPTV and video-on-demand and he is positive about the impact it has on his and other resident's lives. "Broadband makes life easier in many ways," he says. "It saves me time; I can pay bills and use other bank services from home at any time I want. I can also access the local, national and international news and with video-on-demand I can choose a film with my remote control instead of traveling downtown to rent one. My wife is also able to work from home now so having fast and reliable broadband is a huge advantage for us in so many ways."

The introduction of new services such as video-on-demand is a recent development for Hudiksvall and like other residents in the area, Janne previously experienced a limited choice when it came to selecting a home broadband package. This is because the Municipality of Hudiksvall was the only Service Provider to the area and this restricted new investment in broadband. Keen to provide the latest technology and bring new services to the people, the Municipality recognized the need to introduce competition and attract a number of Service Providers to enable this to happen.
Hudiksvall chose to implement Ericsson's open-access network which has allowed several Service Providers to operate in Hudiksvall using the same infrastructure. This is a cost-effective solution for the Municipality which has brought new operators to the city and has led to a rise in quality and competitive packages for subscribers. Janne believes that the technology makes Hudiksvall a more attractive place to live and work and for new companies to become established. "Historically, Hudiksvall's industry is based on forest products like paper and wood products, hydraulic products like cranes and pumps and the cable industry. Over the last ten years we have seen many new technology organizations and companies become established in Hudiksvall. It is giving the city a new lease of life and I hope this is just the beginning of a new successful era for Hudiksvall."
