Korea moves closer to all HDTV goal with Ericsson
SkyLife to offer enhanced HDTV to consumers
Strengthens vision for an all HD service by 2015
Capacity for over 150 new HD channels without additional transponder space
SkyLife, the Korean satellite broadcaster, has deployed an Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) video processing solution that enables it to enhance its HD offering and move another step closer to realizing its vision of everything in HD by 2015. Ericsson’s award-winning HD solution allows SkyLife to potentially deliver over 150 HD channels to more than 3 million subscribers.
“We wanted a solution which was going to significantly improve our current TV offering, delivering better picture quality and a superior HD experience to our subscribers,” says Han Lee, Head of Operation Center, SkyLife. “We went through periods of extensive testing with vendors, and are pleased to have selected Ericsson’s market leading solution, which enables the high quality and critical bandwidth efficiency we need to meet our goal of an all HDTV service by 2015.”
The improvement in bitrate efficiency means that SkyLife will be able to meet its targets for HD expansion without the need for additional transponder space. This represents a massive saving in operational expenditure and gives SkyLife a key differentiator in a competitive market.
“Ericsson believes in an all HD future, so we are pleased to provide industry leading technology that will enable SkyLife to stay at the forefront of the highly sophisticated Korean TV market,” says Dr. Jaehoon Shim, Regional Director, Northeast Asia, Solution Area TV, Ericsson. “Limitations in satellite capacity meant SkyLife needed the most efficient HD compression platform available to add additional channels. With this deployment we are able to offer SkyLife a solution that can deliver more HDTV channels than ever before, whilst maintaining or improving picture quality and significantly improving the viewing experience for consumers.”
SkyLife has selected a system comprised of the Ericsson Video Processor with the world class EN8190 MPEG-4 AVC HD encoder modules, Ericsson MX8400 System Multiplexer and the Ericsson RX1290 Multi-format SD/HD professional receiver, all under the management of Ericsson’s nCompass Control
