Getting developers on board early
Providing the tools and community to encourage great smartphone apps at launch.
An essential part of delivering a great smartphone user experience is ensuring there are plenty of innovative apps available that people like using. Smartphone users are becoming more discerning and they look for apps that work well and make the most of the device’s capabilities.
For smartphone makers, the days of ‘build it and they will come’ are over. Great smartphones need a great app ecosystem, and vice versa. That’s why ST-Ericsson is taking a proactive role in encouraging software developers to set their creativity free and come up with world-beating apps.
ST-Ericsson supplies innovative mobile platforms to the world’s leading smartphone makers. Now it’s ensuring that access to this innovation is available at an early stage to the world’s developer community through two new initiatives: the introduction of an advanced developer board, known as Snowball, and the creation of the Igloo open source community for mobile innovation.
The Snowball developer board is a powerful, feature-rich development tool, which enables fast and easy development of apps for mobile devices based on Android and Ubuntu with ST-Ericsson’s platforms.
Snowball combines ST-Ericsson’s Nova™ A9500 dual-core application processor – to be used in a range of forthcoming smartphones and other devices – with innovative Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) that provide 3D gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer and a barometer, together with GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth features. The small, battery-operated device includes support for 3D graphics, 1080p HD video, high-resolution cameras and HDMI output.
The Snowball board is designed to put sophisticated mobile technologies within reach of a broad community of professional developers, so that they can create and perfect their apps for a wide range of devices before they are launched.
ST-Ericsson has made the Snowball software available as open source code, which means developers can optimize the operation of their apps at every level of the software stack to ensure the best-possible performance and user experience.
ST-Ericsson is already an active participant in a number of developer communities, and has now taken a step further in its support of the app developer community by establishing a collaboration portal dedicated to developers working on its platforms.
This portal is the hub for the Igloo community and a place where developers can come together and exchange information and ideas, or even solve problems collectively. The Igloo community site will contain information on getting started, user guides and releases, as well as recommendations for hardware interfaces, peripherals and complete software packages that are already aligned with open source requirements and standards.
By providing sophisticated development tools and online community, ST-Ericsson is enabling developers to fully harness the capabilities of the most advanced devices – helping ensure they are launched with a host of great apps that are ready to go.
