InOutTV chooses Opera browser for TV platform

Opera Software announced that InOutTV, the largest Over-the-Top operator in Spain, has chosen the Opera browser for its television platform. This opens the door for advanced web technologies adoption as a seamless means to bring content to millions of end users running Opera on their TVs.

Opera Software is a key enabler, making content and applications available on TVs. Opera embraces open and industry standards such as HTML5, W3C widgets, OIPF and HbbTV, giving players in the connected TV space the assurance that they can deliver any live or on-demand content or service, on any set-top box or TV, from any source. Technology, coupled with strong industry partnerships, make the Opera Devices Software Developer Kit easy to implement on a platform and to integrate with streaming media players, conditional access systems and personal video recorders.

“Opera gives us the assurance of compatibility with the latest industry standards like HTML5 or HbbTV,” said Eudald Domenech, CEO. “In a race in which only three or four companies worldwide have the capacity to remain competitive, Opera is one of them.”

The newly available combined product will integrate the latest Opera browser rendering engine with InOutTV’s framework and advanced Digital Video Broadcasting middleware. The result is a ready-to-market HbbTV solution that provides maximum flexibility and brings to users a feature-rich experience with full support for next-generation broadcast portals and services. The highly modular approach enables device manufacturers to deploy the HbbTV software in almost any possible scenario, independent of DVB stack and chipset.

“By choosing Opera we have been able to integrate a complete web experience in our devices in virtually no time, just by using well documented APIs and optimizing runtime parameters,” said David Lecumberri, CTO, InOutTV. “The flexibility of plug-ins, JavaScript extensions and widget support have enabled us to concentrate on creating the best online experience, while leaving compatibility with the latest web standards and technologies to the real experts.”

Across Europe, the technology is already implemented by other major TV players such as ARD, ARTE, RTL and ZDF.
