SilverTree Media brings kid power to Xperia™ PLAY
A major factor driving the success of the Xperia™ PLAY is the amazing range of games available for this revolutionary device. Sony Ericsson makes a point of working closely with game developers interested in optimising their games for Xperia™ PLAY, and we’re keen on sharing the knowledge our partners have gained as they’ve done their game development. Read on to learn about SilverTree Media and their take on developing for the Xperia™ PLAY.
At this year’s E3 convention in Los Angeles, Sony Ericsson took the opportunity to sit down and chat with one of our booth gaming partners, SilverTree Media. The independent game studio is based in Palo Alto, California, and has created a number of original, high-quality games.
Nate Smith, SilverTree Media CEO
We spoke to Nate Smith, CEO and discussed his studio’s titles for the Xperia™ PLAY. The award-winning game Cordy is a physics-based 3D puzzle platformer about a little robot with a big job – to power up his world! Cordy has already racked up well over 1 million downloads on the Android Market. Sleepy Jack, a tube-racing game about a boy who dreams about his toys, debuted at E3 with a demo.
How are Cordy and Sleepy Jack optimized for the Xperia™ PLAY?
- Players can use the handset’s physical controls. For both games, we enabled the D-pad, and kept the other controls simple: L and R triggers, the X button to shoot or jump, and (in Cordy) the Square button for action.
How easy was it for SilverTree Media to optimize for the Xperia™ PLAY?
- Very easy. Both games were built using Unity. The Unity development group is extremely helpful and very approachable. And our partners at Sony Ericsson have been, across the board, excellent to work with.
What do you like most about developing for the Xperia™ PLAY?
- The quality of the Xperia™ PLAY is awesome. Our games look beautiful, they’re a joy to play with the physical controls, and the handset is PlayStation®-certified to boot. The Xperia™ PLAY delivers the user experience our fans expect.
What are some tips you have for developers interested in designing games for the Xperia™ PLAY?
- Be sure to take advantage of the physical controls. Some players prefer the touch screen; the Xperia™ PLAY has this option, and you should support it. But other players strongly prefer mashing the X button, for example. Make sure they can. Beyond that, we’ve found that Xperia™ PLAY customers care about quality – so iterate, iterate, iterate. Especially when it comes to characters. That way, you’re not just building a game. You’re building characters who’ll live forever!
Any final words for Xperia™ PLAY owners?
- Yes! We just released a GIANT update for Cordy. It includes 9 more levels, a new gameplay mechanic (hovering), an intro story, a world map, in-game tutorials, and better menus. Download the Cordy update today.
