Almost half (46%) of all Brits would consider swapping their partner for a friend, stranger or celebrity, according to new survey from Orange
Nearly two thirds (62%) of Brits would swap where they live for other cities both home and abroad, with women dreaming of romantic Rome and men choosing Amsterdam
Recent scandals have taken their toll as politician (6%) and newspaper editor (11%) slide to least popular ‘dream job’ swaps
The UK has been revealed as a nation of swappers who would exchange their homes, jobs and relationships to try out something new, according to new research released to support Orange’s new Swapables plan. From wife swaps to life swaps, it seems we’re all dreaming of the next best thing, as respondents leapt at the chance to see life through someone else’s eyes. Almost two thirds (62%) of those polled would shake off the dust of their home town for the chance to try somewhere new, but the swapping doesn’t stop there - the results found that over half of all Brits (64%) would swap their job, while others would consider swapping their partners, physical appearance and more.
When asked if they’d ever consider a partner swap, half of all respondents (54%) loyally said they would never contemplate swapping their significant other. Amongst the wife swap candidates, 45-54 year olds were the most likely to volunteer for a partner swap (35%) – while the over 55+ group remained devoted to their other halves, with only 28% ready for a change. Over in the Midlands, couples are a little more adventurous - the region topped the poll for most keen to partner swap.
It seems the younger generation would prefer to keep their friends close with 16-24 year olds choosing a platonic friend as the best choice for their temporary swap (43%). Celebrity choices for a swap with current partners include favourites George Clooney, David Beckham and Cheryl Cole – but the poll also unveiled votes for quirky choices such as Sebastian Coe, grannies’ favourite Cliff Richard, Simon Cowell and Rod Stewart!
There are raised voices in the valleys too, with Welsh respondents revealing squabbles as a key reason for a temporary partner change, while shrewd lawyers cited their other halves lacklustre wages as a reason to swap partner. Thankfully, romance is still alive and well – one romantic respondent wrote that he would only consider a partner swap “to check that mine is as perfect as I think she is”.
Amongst those desperate to swap British life for a taste of international luxury are romantic female respondents imagining La Dolce Vita and naming Rome as their top choice for a dream ‘swap’ city - while their male partners may be dreaming of rowdier times with Amsterdam as their top pick. 16-24 year olds are more likely to be plotting to live the American dream with the US a clear winner amongst the younger generation.
Back in the workplace, recent scandals concerning particular jobs seem to have taken their toll on any job swappers out there. Politician (6%) and newspaper editor (11%) were the least popular choices for job swaps, while Brits still have stars in their eyes – a career as an actor/actress was the overwhelming fantasy job swap choice, with over a third of the votes. Down-to-earth Brits named doctor as their second choice however, proving that it’s not all glitz and glamour for potential job swappers.

Other findings from the survey include:
Welsh loyal to green, green grass of home. Residents of Wales and Scotland were the least likely to up sticks, with only 16% and 25% respectively saying they’d consider a move – while a whopping 70% of Midlands residents would leave their home behind.
Even British men are body conscious: more men chose their body (27%) as the thing they’d most like to swap than house, job or car
Death of the office party romance: colleagues were the least popular choice for a temporary partner swap, with only 9% of respondents taking the plunge
High graduate expectations: The majority of 16-24 year olds (28%) would only consider a job swap for the ‘dream job’
There’s no business like show business! Arts and culture respondents were the least likely to consider a job swap (50%), while frazzled HR professionals were the most likely to swap (82%)
Dreaming of Oz – Australia topped the choices of international ‘swap’ country across all age groups (22%), while a post-tsunami Japan was rated as the lowest (2%)
