Jelly Bean updating hitting Galaxy SIII in the UK this month, US in “the coming months”
Samsung has confirmed via its UK Facebook page that the hugely anticipated Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will indeed hit the Galaxy SIII here in the UK this month.
The update was said to be rolling out across Europe last month, with handsets in Poland being the first to get it. Naturally the usual suspects starting hounding Samsung via Facebook like having the update was a matter of life and death, and eventually the company responded to one desperate customer to confirm.
It seems a mixture of the update being announced and then appearing in various European countries has given most people the idea they should all be getting it at once. Samsung’s track record isn’t a great one with updates, but hopefully we will actually see the update here in the UK before November.
Unfortunately the news isn’t so good for our cousins across the pond, with Samsung’s US department confirming the Jelly Bean update’s arrival for the S3. The Korean manufacturer has put a very loose schedule on things, confirming only that the update would arrive “in the coming months”.
Galaxy SIII owners stateside are encouraged to keep an eye out for more specific dates from their networks (or ‘carriers’, as they like to call them), as each will need to test the firmware to confirm compatibility with their handsets. Some will also want to add a touch of customisation – Verizon are usually the ones typical of doing this – so the update may still be months away.
The US update will include something that the EU one won’t: ESPN ScoreCenter. The app will be built in to the phone, which at first seems a strange decision. As it turns out, the app is one of the first to include Samsung’s easy video share feature, which means that video clips can be beamed wirelessly via DLNA to Samsung TVs, laptops and tablets.
