You spend 23 days a year on your phone, new figures suggest
Consider how long you spend looking at your phone in an average day. Checking emails, inanely browsing Twitter or indeed scouring Google for cat memes - we've become obsessed with our shiny smartphones.
Ongoing studies being conducted by leading UK mobile phone insurance company, MobileInsurance.co.uk, suggest an average handset owner spends on average 23 days a year glued to their phone. 2,314 phone users over 18 took part in a poll which sought to find out what tasks we use our phones for most and most importantly how many minutes per day we spend completing those tasks.
The average answer given was 90 minutes (1.5 hours) per day. To put this into perspective, that's 32,850 minutes per year, or 22.8 days. Over the average person's lifetime that figure totals at roughly 3.9 years. Can you imagine spending the last 4 years of your life continuously scrolling through your Facebook timeline, making calls, or flinging angry birds at smug pigs? It's incomprehensible.
Jason Brockman, director of MobileInsurance.co.uk, commented with his thoughts on the survey:
I was amazed to see how much we use our mobile phones over the course of the year and even our whole adult lifetime. To see that we text, call, browse the net, use apps, take pictures and more for almost 4 years in our lifetime is astounding.
Whilst these aren't the most scientific figures ever collected, this average guideline clearly demonstrates how central the phone has become to our daily lives and habits.
With the advent of Google Glass and a rumoured "iWatch" in production by Apple, these figures are only likely to increase.
